    Financial Implications from Contracting Avian Influenza in a U.S. Broiler Operation

    This essay evaluates the on-farm financial impacts of an avian influenza outbreak on a U.S. commercial broiler operation. It investigates how the timing and length of the outbreak impacts farm financial performance for two different farmers, beginning and experienced. Results indicate that a beginning farmer is more susceptible to significant financial losses. Both farmers are financially impacted more when avian influenza is contracted early in the investment and when the contamination and eradication of the virus was prolonged. Furthermore, this essay highlights the problems of using standard financial measures for analyzing disease outbreaks under production contract arrangements and presents alternative measures for financial performance. This study provides the foundation for future research to determine actuarially fair premiums for avian influenza insurance mechanisms

    A hedonic analysis of factors impacting the value of planters on the used machinery market

    A hedonic model was employed to examine factors that influence the resale price of row crop planters on the used machinery market. Planter sale data from 2016 to 2018 were utilized to conduct the analysis. Results suggested that the primary factors impacting planter resale prices were make, age, condition, planter configuration, row number, and row spacing. As a function of age (depreciation), planter values were generally determined to decrease at a decreasing rate. Finally, it was determined that there was a significant interaction between the variables make and age, suggesting that different planter makes depreciate differently

    A whole farm economic analysis was conducted to provide a detailed assessment into the economic, risk, and production implications due to the adoption of auto-steer navigation. It was determined that auto-steer navigation was profitable for a grain farmer in Kentucky with net returns increasing up to 0.90% ($3.35/acre). Additionally, the technology could be used in reducing production risk. Adoption of the technology also alters production practices for optimal use

    Evaluating the profitability and environmental impacts of poultry litter sub-surfer technology

    Commercial fertilization has long been the preferred method amongst Kentucky grain farmers. However, emerging technology of poultry litter sub-surface injection will challenge the normal fertilization methods though there have been concerns over added costs and time in the field. A resource allocation linear programming model was performed in AIMMS software comparing the two methods. Results showed that the injection method yielded higher net returns then the typical commercial fertilization despite the additional costs and field hours. This information will be useful to farm managers looking to increase profit margins once the technology hits the market
