Detection of liver HBc antigen and its antibody in sera from viral hepatitis by the immunofluorescent complement technique
Hepatitis B core antigen (HBc Ag) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs Ag) were detected in the liver tissue of a patient with chronic aggressive hepatitis by the immunofluorescent complement technique. The presence of anti-HBc was examined by the same method in 67 human sera previously tested for HBs Ag, anti-HBs and s-GPT levels. HBc Ag was localized mainly in the nucleus and sometimes in the cytoplasm of the hepatic cells. HBs Ag was found only in the cytoplasm. The focal area of HBc Ag positive hepatic cells seemed to correspond to the HBs Ag positive cells. Double staining demonstrated the simultaneous presence of HBs Ag and HBc Ag in individual cells. Anti-HBc positive serum was found in 46 (68.7%) cases. Forty-eight (71.6%) indicated a combination of HBs Ag and anti-HBc.</p
Standing position からの横方向への各種スタート動作についての力学的評価
The purpose of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of various starting method to sideward direction from standing position necessary for "Open Skill Sports" such as tennis and american football. Seven male "open skill sports" players were served as subjects in this study. They were asked to start from standing position to left direction as soon as a light signal in front of them turned on. The time from the signal to the goal which was 2 m apart from the starting position was measured. Four types of starting method were compared biomechanically, namely 1. Starting without any suggexrions nor directions. (Free Start : FS) 2. Starting with sideward thrust of the right leg to the starting direction (Side Thrust : ST) 3. Starting with changing step of a right leg in opposite direction to the start first (Kick Back : KB). 4. Starting with crossover of a right leg in front of the left leg. (Crossover : CO) The result obtained in this study were as follows. a) The fastest starting method was a CO in the mean value (and SD) at the measurement time 1.038s (±0.05), while there were three subjects whose fastest method was KB. b) In average KB indicated the fastest speed of the body center of gravity, and it was a CO to have indicated the slowest value. c) The forced in sideward direction was the largest for KB start, which could give favorable effect on the quick movement
The association between subjective anti-doping knowledge and objective knowledge among Japanese university athletes: a cross-sectional study
IntroductionThis study aimed to assess the association between subjective anti-doping knowledge (subjective ADK) and objective anti-doping knowledge (objective ADK) among Japanese university athletes, framed within the context of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).MethodsEligible participants were 486 university athletes [320 men (65.8%), 166 women; mean age of 18.9 ± 1.0 years]. The participants categorized themselves in terms of the quality of their anti-doping knowledge. This assessment resulted in an independent variable coded as “(1) substantial lack of adequate knowledge,” “(2) some lack of adequate knowledge,” “(3) fair amount of knowledge” or “(4) good amount of knowledge.” Objective ADK was assessed using the Athlete Learning Program about Health and Anti-Doping (ALPHA) test, a set of questions derived from the ALPHA—a former World Anti-Doping Agency e-learning program. The test comprises 12 questions (four choices each; passing index: ≧10 points or 80% correct answer rate). ANCOVA was conducted using subjective ADK as an independent variable and ALPHA scores as a dependent variable, adjusting for confounding factors (anti-doping experience).ResultsThe ALPHA corrected answer rate across subjective ADK levels for the group were 73.10% for “(1) substantial lack of adequate knowledge,” 71.97% for “(2) some lack of adequate knowledge,” 75.18% for “(3) fair amount of knowledge” and 72.86% for “(4) good amount of knowledge.” Comparison between different levels of subjective ADK revealed no significant differences in ALPHA score considering the main effects or any of their interactions.DiscussionThe present results revealed that Japanese university athletes’ subjective ADK did not match their objective ADK. In the context of the TPB, there may be limitations in the perceived behavioral control in anti-doping knowledge. Even if athletes view doping as a wrongful act and have formed attitudes and subjective norms to comply with the rules, the results suggest that errors may occur in the composition of behavioral intentions due to a lack of knowledge. This could lead to the possibility of facing the risk of unintentional anti-doping rule violations. It highlights the need for targeted educational interventions to align subjective ADK of athletes with their objective ADK
Differential Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and VEGF Receptors in the Sequence of Hyperplastic Polyp, Serrated Adenoma and Adenocarcinoma of Colorectum
AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the role for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors, VEGFR-1 and -2, in the hyperplastic polyp (HP)- serrated adenoma (SA)-adenocarcinoma (AC) sequence of the colorectum.Methods: Thirty-six HPs, 33 SAs and 7 ACs (which contained HP and/or SA) were immunohistochemically examined for the expression of VEGF, VEGFR-1, and VEGFR-2.Results: VEGF protein was expressed in the cytoplasm of SA and AC tumor cells, and VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 were expressed both in the cytoplasm and on the membrane of these tumors, while there was faint or no expression of VEGF, VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 in HPs. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that 8.3% (3 of 36) HPs, 87.9% (29 of 33) SAs and 100% (7 of 7) ACs were positive for VEGF; 2.8% (1 of 36) HPs, 97.0% (32 of 33) SAs and 100% (7 of 7) ACs were positive for VEGFR-1; 16.7% (6 of 36) HPs, 100% (33 of 33) SAs and 100% (7 of 7) ACs were positive for VEGFR-2. The expression of VEGF, VEGFR-1 or VEGFR-2 was statistically correlated with the sequence of HP, SA and AC (P < 0.0001, respectively) Conclusion: Our results suggest that the VEGF pathway may play an important role in the HP-SA-AC sequence
Brown Adipose Tissue in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
The prevalence of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in the periadrenal adipose tissue was studied in 20 autopsy cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In 19 of 20 cases, the periadrenal BAT in focal or diffuse distribution was observed. Histometry of BAT revealed average occupancy rates of 21.6% and 4.2% in ALS and age-matched control cases, respectively (p<0.01). Since emaciation and chronic hypoxia in those ALS patients were most likely related to severe muscle wasting and respiratory involvement, it is speculated that an increase in BAT occupancy rates may be secondary to altered thermogenesis which was augmented by chronic hypoxia
Improving Human Plateaued Motor Skill with Somatic Stimulation
Procedural motor learning includes a period when no substantial gain in performance improvement is obtained even with repeated, daily practice. Prompted by the potential benefit of high-frequency transcutaneous electrical stimulation, we examined if the stimulation to the hand reduces redundant motor activity that likely exists in an acquired hand motor skill, so as to further upgrade stable motor performance. Healthy participants were trained until their motor performance of continuously rotating two balls in the palm of their right hand became stable. In the series of experiments, they repeated a trial performing this cyclic rotation as many times as possible in 15 s. In trials where we applied the stimulation to the relaxed thumb before they initiated the task, most reported that their movements became smoother and they could perform the movements at a higher cycle compared to the control trials. This was not possible when the dorsal side of the wrist was stimulated. The performance improvement was associated with reduction of amplitude of finger displacement, which was consistently observed irrespective of the task demands. Importantly, this kinematic change occurred without being noticed by the participants, and their intentional changes of motor strategies (reducing amplitude of finger displacement) never improved the performance. Moreover, the performance never spontaneously improved during one-week training without stimulation, whereas the improvement in association with stimulation was consistently observed across days during training on another week combined with the stimulation. The improved effect obtained in stimulation trials on one day partially carried over to the next day, thereby promoting daily improvement of plateaued performance, which could not be unlocked by the first-week intensive training. This study demonstrated the possibility of effectively improving a plateaued motor skill, and pre-movement somatic stimulation driving this behavioral change
AN AUTOPSY CASE OF PARATHYROID CARCINOMA
A case of hyperfunctioning parathyroid carcinoma was found in a 78-year-old female who had suffered from hypercalcemia for 5 years. She died of renal failure and pulmonary edema. Autopsy revealed an encapsulated tumor arising from the left upper parathyroid gland. Histologically, fibrous trabeculae, capsular invasion and blood vessel invasion were occasionally present in this tumor, suggesting that this tumor was malignant. However, mitotic figures were rarely observed. We reviewed reported cases of parathyroid carcinoma and discussed about the significance of mitosis for diagnosis
Expression of Superoxide Dismutase in Basal Cell Carcinoma
There have been no studies of the expression of superoxide dismutase(SOD) at the mRNA and protein level in skin cancers. Northern blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were performed in order to analyze the expression of Cu, Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD in basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and normal skin (NS). The expression of Mn-SOD mRNA and protein was significantly higher in BCC than in NS. The expression of Cu,Zn-SOD, however, was high in BCC at the mRNA level, but not at the protein level. These results suggest that an increase in the expression of Mn-SOD relates to the development of BCCs
Controlling oxygen coordination and valence of network forming cations
Understanding the structure-property relationship of glass material is still challenging due to a lack of periodicity in disordered materials. Here, we report the properties and atomic structure of vanadium phosphate glasses characterized by reverse Monte Carlo modelling based on neutron/synchrotron X-ray diffraction and EXAFS data, supplemented by Raman and NMR spectroscopy. In vanadium-rich glass, the water durability, thermal stability and hardness improve as the amount of P2O5 increases, and the network former of the glass changes from VOx polyhedra to the interplay between VOx polyhedra and PO4 tetrahedra. We find for the first time that the coordination number of oxygen atoms around a V4+ is four, which is an unusually small coordination number, and plays an important role for water durability, thermal stability and hardness. Furthermore, we show that the similarity between glass and crystal beyond the nearest neighbour distance is important for glass properties. These results demonstrate that controlling the oxygen coordination and valence of the network-forming cation is necessary for designing the properties of glass
