Labor Contract Law of the People\u27s Republic of China - Unofficial English Translation
The Dong Bao Hua Legal Center at East China University of Politics and Law and Ashley Russell (M.R.P. Cornell University), with review and advice from Pan Shih-wei of Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, have produced an English translation of China\u27s recently passed Labor Contract Law. Our thanks to Dr. Michael H. Belzer, Wayne State University, for providing us with this copy
Developing Higher-level Cognitive Skills In a Fire Protection Course
In an ideal world, all instructors of safety and health courses would be masters of course subject matter as well as the theories and practices for effective teaching. In practice, however, most instructors are much stronger in one or the other. This paper provides an example of how some fundamental knowledge from educational experts can be useful for improving a traditional safety course. Is there a problem with the way traditional safety and health (S&H) courses are taught? It is asserted by this author that S&H education, in general, places too much emphasis on acquisition and comprehension of facts at the expense of helping students develop higher-level cognitive abilities. This paper explains the basis for the assertion and reports an experience upgrading a traditional fire protection course to include more assignments involving the higher-level ability known in the education community as synthesis
Guest Editorial: Social and human aspects of cyber-physical systems
open6siIn the vision of Industry 4.0, the new industrial revolution is a
revolution of cyber-physical systems, of which the Internet of
Things forms a key foundation that has a great impact on the way
people live, and the way businesses are organised. Cyber-physical
systems are often considered feedback systems that integrate
computation, networking, and physical processes, and more
recently with ‘human-in-the-loop’ as one of the key research
topics.
The advances in social computing have connected human-inthe-loop in cyber-social systems such as Facebook and Twitter,
while their social-physical activities are supported by the cyberphysical systems on or near their bodies and in their interconnected
environments. Cyber-physical systems become an integral part of
social-cyber-physical systems (SCPS) that weave into the sociotechnical fabric of human society. These hybrid systems, exhibiting
both continuous (in physical and social spaces) and discrete (in
cyberspaces) dynamic behaviour, give rise to not only new
opportunities but also new challenges in designing products and
services where human and technical aspects are massively
intertwined. This Special Issue aims to present state-of-the-art
research attempts and results on the topic of SCPS.openopenHu J.; Liang R.-H.; Shih C.-S.; Catala A.; Marcenaro L.; Osawa H.Hu, J.; Liang, R. -H.; Shih, C. -S.; CATALA MALLOFRE, Andreu; Marcenaro, L.; Osawa, H
Peculiar outbursts of an ultra luminous source likely signs of an aperiodic disc-wind
The metal rich globular cluster RZ 2109 in the massive Virgo elliptical
galaxy NGC 4472 (M49) harbours the ultra luminous X-ray source XMMU
122939.7+075333. Previous studies showed that this source varies between bright
and faint phases on timescales of just a few hours. Here, we report the
discovery of two peculiar X-ray bursting events that last for about 8 and 3.5
hours separated by about 3 days. Such a recurring X-ray burst-like behaviour
has never been observed before. We argue that type-I X-ray bursts or super
bursts as well as outburst scenarios requiring a young stellar object are
highly unlikely explanations for the observed light curve, leaving an aperiodic
disc wind scenario driven by hyper-Eddington accretion as a viable explanation
for this new type of X-ray flaring activities.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Ap
Safety Training: Flowchart Model Facilitates Development of Effective Courses
Few SE&H professionals have time to keep up with the voluminous literature about safety and health training. An easier strategy involves adopting a model of the training process, such as the one described in this article. The model is presented as a flowchart to show the relationships among the component processes for all safet\\u27 and health training. It is intended to be a flexible model, suitable for tailoring to organizational needs, and easy to conceptualize. By learning this model, SH&E professionals will have a solid understanding of Ihe processes involved in developing and implementing an effective safety training program
H. T. Tsiang: A Critical Overview of His Work in Literary and Social Context
A Chinese exile in the United States, H. T. Tsiang (1899-1971) wrote several books in English that represent pioneer works in the canon of Asian American literature. Although few know his work today, Tsiang is one of the earliest and most prolific innovators of Asian American literature, anticipating some of the appropriative methods, formal techniques, and critical strategies that have come to characterize the tradition
