    A Follow-up Study of Neonatal Interatrial Shunt with Echocardiography until Twelve to Fifteen Months of Age

    ObjectiveTo assess the incidence and natural history of full-term neonates with interatrial shunt (IAS).MethodsA follow-up study of 1389 neonates who received screening echocardiography between 2003 and 2006. Babies with IAS at 2 to 4 days of life underwent follow-up echocardiography at 2 to 4 months, 6 to 9 months and 12 to 15 months of age until closure of IAS.ResultsThe ratio of IAS was 68.3% initially. No significant demographic differences were identified between infants with and without initial IAS. Among 949 neonates with initial IAS, 84.5% infants had a left-to-right interatrial shunt, 13.5% had bidirectional shunt and 2% had predominantly right-to-left shunt. The persistence rate of IAS at 12 to 15 months of age was 3.8% (44/1166). The initial size of IAS ranged from 1.2 to 7.7 mm (4.3 ± 1.1 mm) detected by color Doppler flow mapping and cases were divided into three groups: small (≦5 mm), medium (5 to 8 mm) and large group (≧8 mm). There were 74.6% infants in the small group and 25.4% in the medium group initially. The neonates in the initial small group would always see their IAS close or else they would remain in the small group. Those in the final medium and large size groups always came from the initial medium group. The late closure rate of IAS was 93.9% of infants with initial IAS. The closure curves of initial small and medium sized groups were significantly different, and their late closure rates were 95.1% and 90.4%, respectively.ConclusionsIAS was very common during early neonatal stage, but most cases would close after 1 year. The late closure rate of initial IAS was different if using a cutpoint of 5 mm

    Value of segmental myocardial strain by 2-dimensional strain echocardiography for assessment of scar area induced in a rat model of myocardial infarction

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>Two-dimensional strain echocardiography (2DSE) technique has enabled accurate quantification of regional myocardial function. This experimental study was aimed to investigate the value of 2DSE in detection of segmental regional myocardial dysfunction induced by fibrosis following myocardial infarction in a small animal (rat) model.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A rat model of myocardial infarction was established by ligation of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery in 17 SD rats. Regional myocardial function was detected by 2DSE at baseline and 4-weeks post-infarction, including end-systolic radial strain and strain rate (SR and SrR) and end-systolic circumferential strain and strain rate (SC and SrC) of each of six segments at papillary level. According to the size of scar found by histologic Masson staining, the optimal cutoff points of parameters for detecting scar area were analyzed and the sensitivity and specificity of every parameter to detect myocardial scar were obtained using ROC.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>(1) Comparing with parameters measured at baseline, there were significant decreases in SR, SrR, SC and SrC of each segment at 4 weeks post-infarction, with the worst in the infarct area (32.90 ± 8.79 vs 11.18 ± 3.89, 6.28 ± 1.35 vs 3.18 ± 0.47, -14.46 ± 2.21 vs <it>-</it>6.30 ± 2.17 and 4.93 ± 0.95 vs 2.59 ± 1.16, respectively) (all <it>P </it>< 0.05). (2)By 4 weeks, the myocardium of infarct area (anteroseptum, anterior and anterolateral) had fibrosis (31.33 ± 9.89, 73.42 ± 13.21 and 13.99 ± 3.24%, respectively) with minimal fibrosis in inferoseptal segment (0.32 ± 0.19%), no fibrosis was found in the inferior and inferolateral segments. (3)Significant negative correlations were found between the size of segmental scar and 2DSE parameters (r-value -0.61 ~ -0.80, all <it>P </it>< 0.01) with the strongest correlation in SR. SR less than 10% has 84% sensitivity and 98% specificity for detecting segments of scar area greater than 30% with AUC = 0.97.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>2DSE is able to assess regional myocardial dysfunction in a rat model of myocardial infarction and has high accuracy in detecting infarct segments with scar area greater than 30%.</p

The 2,3,5-trichloro­phenyl ring is almost coplanar with the urea group in both molecules, whereas the 2,6-difluoro­phenyl ring is twisted from the urea plane by 54.83 (10)° in one molecule and 60.58 (10)° in the other. An intra­molecular N—H—O hydrogen bond stabilizes the mol­ecular conformation. The crystal packing is formed by inter­molecular N—H—O hydrogen bonds and F⋯F inter­actions [2.841 (2) Å]

    Polymorphisms of the _ENPP1_ gene are not associated with type 2 diabetes or obesity in the Chinese Han population

    *Objective:* Type 2 Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and with a major feature of insulin resistance. Genetic association studies have suggested that _ENPP1_ might play a potential role in susceptibility to type 2 diabetes and obesity. Our study aimed to examine the association between _ENPP1_ and type 2 diabetes and obesity.&#xd;&#xa;&#xd;&#xa;*Design:* Association study between two SNPs, rs1044498 (K121Q) and rs7754561 of ENPP1 and diabetes and obesity in the Chinese Han population.&#xd;&#xa;&#xd;&#xa;*Subjects:* 1912 unrelated patients (785 male and 1127 female with a mean age 63.8 &#xb1; 9 years), 236 IFG/IGT subjects (83 male and 153 female with a mean age 64 &#xb1; 9 years) and 2041 controls (635 male and 1406 female with a mean age 58 &#xb1; 9 years).&#xd;&#xa; &#xd;&#xa;*Measurements:* Subjects were genotyped for two SNPs using TaqMan technology on an ABI7900 system and tested by regression analysis.&#xd;&#xa;&#xd;&#xa;*Results:* By logistic regression analysis, rs1044498 (K121Q) and rs7754561 showed no statistical association with type 2 diabetes, obesity under additive, dominant and recessive models either before or after adjusting for sex and age. Haplotype analysis found a marginal association of haplotype C-G (p=0.05) which was reported in the previous study.&#xd;&#xa;&#xd;&#xa;*Conclusion:* Our investigation did not replicated the positive association found previously and suggested that the polymorphisms of _ENPP1_ might not play a major role in the susceptibility to type 2 diabetes or obesity in the Chinese Han population

    In-Vitro Study on the Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activity of Four Commercial Essential Oils and In-Situ Evaluation of Their Effect on Quality Deterioration of Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) during Cold Storage

    The antioxidant and antibacterial properties of four essential oils (oregano essential oil (OEO), tea tree essential oil (TTEO), wild orange essential oil (WOEO), and clove leaf essential oil (CLEO)) were determined. The in-vitro experiment indicated that CLEO had the highest total phenolic content and DPPH scavenging activity, and OEO displayed the highest antibacterial effect, so they were applied to maintain the quality of shrimp for further study. In-situ study, the total viable counts of shrimp were inhibited from 9.05 log CFU/g to 8.18 and 8.34 log CFU/g by 2% of OEO and CLEO treated alone on 10 d. The melanosis ratio was also retarded from 38.16% to 28.98% and 26.35% by the two essential oils. The inhibitory effects of OEO and CLEO on the increase of PPO activity, weight loss, and TCA-soluble peptides, and the decreasing tendency of whiteness, the contents of myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic proteins were also founded. The samples treated with 1% OEO + 1% CLEO had better quality than those treated alone. Therefore, the combination of OEO and CLEO had a synergistic effect, which displayed the highest efficiency to prevent the melanosis, bacterial growth, and protein hydrolysis of shrimp.Peer reviewe

    Tuning a magnetic energy scale with pressure in UTe2_2

    A fragile ordered state can be easily tuned by various external parameters. When the ordered state is suppressed to zero temperature, a quantum phase transition occurs, which is often marked by the appearance of unconventional superconductivity. While the quantum critical point can be hidden, the influence of the quantum criticality extends to fairly high temperatures, manifesting the non-Fermi liquid behavior in the wide range of the pp-HH-TT phase space. Here, we report the tuning of a magnetic energy scale in the heavy-fermion superconductor UTe2_2, previously identified as a peak in the cc-axis electrical transport, with applied hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field along the aa-axis as complementary (and opposing) tuning parameters. Upon increasing pressure, the characteristic cc-axis peak moves to a lower temperature before vanishing near the critical pressure of about 15 kbar. The application of a magnetic field broadens the peak under all studied pressure values. The observed Fermi-liquid behavior at ambient pressure is violated near the critical pressure, exhibiting nearly linear resistivity in temperature and an enhanced pre-factor. Our results provide a clear picture of energy scale evolution relevant to magnetic quantum criticality in UTe2_2

    The title complex, [Er(C5H5NO)(C2O4)(H2O)]n, is a new erbium polymer based on oxalate and 4-oxidopyridinium ligands. The ErII center is coordinated by six O atoms from three oxalate ligands, one O atom from a 4-oxidopyridinium ligand and one water mol­ecule, and displays a distorted square-anti­prismatic coordination geometry. The oxalate ligands are both chelating and bridging, and link ErII ions, forming Er–oxalate layers in which the attached water and 4-oxidopyridinium units point alternately up and down. A mirror plane passes through the Er atom, one C, the oxide O and two oxalate O atoms. The layers are assembled into a three-dimensional supra­molecular network via inter­molecular hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking inter­actions [centroid–centroid distances of 3.587 (2) Å between parallel pyridinium rings]. Both the water mol­ecule and the 4-oxidopyridinium ligand are disordered over two sites in a 1:1 ratio

    Accurate Direct Measurements of Far-Field Thermal Infrared Emission and its Dynamics

    Accurate direct measurements of far-field thermal infrared emission become increasingly important because conventional methods, relying on indirect assessments, such as reflectance/transmittance, are inaccurate or even unfeasible to characterize state-of-art devices with novel spectra, directionalities, and polarizations. The direct collection of the far-field emission from these tiny devices is also challenging because of their shrinking footprints and uncontrollable radiation noises from their surroundings. Here, we demonstrate a microscopic lock-in FTIR system that realizes significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by combining a microscope and a lock-in amplifier with an FTIR. The lock-in FTIR is ultrasensitive, with a specific detectivity 10^6 times higher than commercial ones, to overcome the optical loss and background noise during the emission light collection. Based on an analytical model of the signal detection process, we also explore the combination of modulated Joule heating and global heating to fulfill the potential of our system for noise reduction. Our findings show that, compared to previous studies, more than 3 times lower temperatures are sufficient to generate a measurable signal. Under a heating temperature of around 125 {\deg}C, we can achieve an SNR of about 23.7, which is far above the true-signal-threshold (SNR of about 3.0). Furthermore, the system can respond fast enough (up to 175kHz) to record spectral-resolved dynamics of microdevices in the frequency domain. The measurable frequency range can be extended up to MHz or even GHz level by a high-speed circuit model. We believe the system together with the analytical signal processing can be beneficial for next-generation thermal infrared material and device exploration, boosting the applications in lighting, sensing, imaging, and energy harvesting on a small scale.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
