Surface Raman spectroscopic investigation of pyridine adsorption at platinum electrodes - effects of potential and electrolyte

    Get PDF
Surface enhanced Raman spectra of pyridine (Py) at Pt electrodes have been investigated as a function of potential and supporting electrolyte. The results show a large difference from those reported for coinage metal electrodes of Ag, Au and Cu, emphasising the effective involvement of chemical enhancement on Pt surfaces. At very negative (or positive) potentials, Raman spectra show the competitive coadsorption of hydrogen (or oxygen-containing species) with Py, and in acidic solutions, PyH+ ions prefer to dissociate into Py adsorbed on Pt surfaces even in the presence of chloride ions. The differences in the surface bonding strength for Py on Pt and coinage metal electrodes are explained in terms of the different electronic configurations of the metals

A discrete firefly algorithm to solve a rich vehicle routing problem modelling a newspaper distribution system with recycling policy

A real-world newspaper distribution problem with recycling policy is tackled in this work. In order to meet all the complex restrictions contained in such a problem, it has been modeled as a rich vehicle routing problem, which can be more specifically considered as an asymmetric and clustered vehicle routing problem with simultaneous pickup and deliveries, variable costs and forbidden paths (AC-VRP-SPDVCFP). This is the first study of such a problem in the literature. For this reason, a benchmark composed by 15 instances has been also proposed. In the design of this benchmark, real geographical positions have been used, located in the province of Bizkaia, Spain. For the proper treatment of this AC-VRP-SPDVCFP, a discrete firefly algorithm (DFA) has been developed. This application is the first application of the firefly algorithm to any rich vehicle routing problem. To prove that the proposed DFA is a promising technique, its performance has been compared with two other well-known techniques: an evolutionary algorithm and an evolutionary simulated annealing. Our results have shown that the DFA has outperformed these two classic meta-heuristics

Dynamic solution probability acceptance within the flower pollination algorithm for combinatorial t-way test suite generation

    Get PDF
In this paper, the enhanced Flower PollinationAlgorithm (FPA) algorithm, called imFPA, has been proposed. Within imFPA, the static selection probability is replaced by the dynamic solution selection probability in order to enhance the intensification and diversification of the overall search process. Experimental adoptions on combinatorial t-way test suite generation problem (where t indicates the interaction strength) show that imFPA produces very competitive results as compared to existing strategies

A facile soft-template synthesis of mesoporous polymeric and carbonaceous nanospheres

    Get PDF
Owing to the weak self-assembly ability of precursor components and the serious crosslinking of neighbouring nanospheres during a hydrothermal process, the synthesis of monodisperse mesoporous polymer nanospheres with diameters below 500 nm remains a great challenge. Here we extend the synthesis method of mesoporous silica nanospheres to enable the preparation of ordered mesoporous resorcinol formaldehyde nanospheres with particle size from 80 to 400 nm and mesopores of ~3.5 nm in diameter. By finely tuning the synthesis parameters, multi-layered mesoporous resorcinol formaldehyde hollow nanospheres can be successfully synthesized. Mesoporous carbon nanospheres and hollow nanospheres with high surface area are further obtained through carbonization of the polymer spheres. The resulting mesoporous carbon nanospheres are demonstrated as the host cathode material for lithium–sulphur batteries. The synthesis strategy provides a benchmark for fabricating well-defined porous carbonaceous nanospheres with potential for energy storage and conversion applications.Jian Liu, Tianyu Yang, Da-Wei Wang, Gao Qing (Max) Lu, Dongyuan Zhao & Shi Zhang Qia
