A simulation model for evaluating national patient record networks in South Africa.
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references. This study has shown that modelling and simulation is a feasible approach for evaluating NPR solutions in the developing context. The model can represent different network models, patient types and performance metrics to aid in the evaluation of NPR solutions. Using the current model, more case studies can be investigated for various public health issues - such as the impact of disease or regional services planning
International Information Management Corporation
Abstract: Digitization and networked computing in the healthcare sector have resulted in electronic patient records that are stored, managed and shared among different healthcare providers. In Developing Countries such systems are being considered to improve on healthcare service delivery, with the aim of nationally available patient records. To implement this, network architectures and data transfer solutions can be adapted from other contexts, such as centralised or peer-to-peer computing. However, it is not always clear that such solutions are most appropriate, especially given the unstable and limited resources of developing countries. This paper proposes that discrete event simulation can be used as the foundation of a tool to measure and evaluate the performance of algorithms and network architectures. The initial proof-of-concept tool is presented, along with how it can be used to evaluate a solution for sharing records between a group of facilities. Initial results are promising and further envisaged investigation is discussed

Low- And medium-spin negative-parity bands in the Os 187 nucleus
Low- and medium-spin negative-parity bands of Os187 have been studied using the AFRican Omnipurpose Detector for Innovative Techniques and Experiments (AFRODITE) array, following the W186(He4,3n)Os187 reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. In the current work, all the previously known bands have been significantly extended and three new bands have been added to the level scheme. The angular distribution ratio (RAD) and polarization measurements have been used to assign spin and parity to the observed new levels. The configurations of some of the bands have been modified. The observed bands are interpreted within the cranked shell model (CSM) and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov (CNSB) formalism. Comparison with experimental data shows good agreements. Systematic comparison with the neighboring Os185 isotope is also discussed
Representing Requirements Traceability Using XML Topic Maps
Despite the importance of requirements traceability in developing software systems, there are few applications that provide useful requirements management techniques. This paper looks at XML Topic Maps as a new technique for the representation of requirements traceability in order to improve requirements management, analysis and visualisation.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the validity of using XML Topic Maps to represent requirements traceability. A software application is developed and used to prove this concept.
The system and project goals are then tested.
It is shown that the use of XML Topic Maps is probably an improved method for the management, analysis and visualisation of requirements traceability. Furthermore, it is concluded that an improved visualization technique will be required for the intuitive navigation of the requirements traceability graphs
Gamma ray production cross sections in proton induced reactions on natural Mg, Si and Fe targets over the proton energy range 30 up to 66 MeV
Gamma-ray excitation functions have been measured for 30, 42, 54 and 66 MeV
proton beams accelerated onto C + O (Mylar), Mg, Si, and Fe targets of
astrophysical interest at the separate-sector cyclotron of iThemba LABS in
Somerset West (Cape Town, South Africa). A large solid angle, high energy
resolution detection system of the Eurogam type was used to record Gamma-ray
energy spectra. Derived preliminary results of Gamma-ray line production cross
sections for the Mg, Si and Fe target nuclei are reported and discussed. The
current cross section data for known, intense Gamma-ray lines from these nuclei
consistently extend to higher proton energies previous experimental data
measured up to Ep ~ 25 MeV at the Orsay and Washington tandem accelerators.
Data for new Gamma-ray lines observed for the first time in this work are also
reported.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. IOP Institute of Physics Conference Nuclear
