Optimal microscale water cooled heat sinks for targeted alleviation of hotspot in microprocessors
This paper was presented at the 4th Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2014), which was held at University College, London, UK. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute, ASME Press, LCN London Centre for Nanotechnology, UCL University College London, UCL Engineering, the International NanoScience Community, www.nanopaprika.eu.Hotspots in microprocessors arise due to non-uniform utilization of the underlying integrated
circuits during chip operation. Conventional liquid cooling using microchannels leads to undercooling of the
hotspot areas and overcooling of the background area of the chip resulting in excessive temperature gradients
across the chip. These in turn adversely affect the chip performance and reliability. This problem becomes
even more acute in multi-core processors where most of the processing power is concentrated in specific
regions of the chip called as cores. We present a 1-dimensional model for quick design of a microchannel
heat sink for targeted, single-phase liquid cooling of hotspots in microprocessors. The method utilizes
simplifying assumptions and analytical equations to arrive at the first estimate of a microchannel heat sink
design that distributes the cooling capacity of the heat sink by adapting the coolant flow and microchannel
size distributions to the microprocessor power map. This distributed cooling in turn minimizes the chip
temperature gradient. The method is formulated to generate a heat sink design for an arbitrary chip power
map and hence can be readily utilized for different chip architectures. It involves optimization of
microchannel widths for various zones of the chip power map under the operational constraints of maximum
pressure drop limit for the heat sink. Additionally, it ensures that the coolant flows uninterrupted through its
entire travel length consisting of microchannels of varying widths. The resulting first design estimate
significantly reduces the computational effort involved in any subsequent CFD analysis required to fine tune
the design for more complex flow situations arising, for example, in manifold microchannel heat sinks
Fabrication of bio-inspired hydrophobic self-assembled electrospun nanofiber based hierarchical structures
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record. In this letter, we present a facile approach to fabricate hydrophobic surfaces based on electrostatic field assisted self-assembly of fibers onto conductive micropillars. Hydrophobic patterns fabricated in this work are inspired by an underwater fern Salvinia molesta. Hydrophilic cellulose acetate nanofibers were electrospun on a conducting micro-patterned surface to create a hierarchical structure. The water contact angle increased from just below 70° (hydrophilic) on the micro-patterned structures to ∼140° (hydrophobic) for the hierarchical structures. Introduced hydrophobicity is due to the pinning of the water droplet to suspended hydrophilic nanofibers and a reduced solid-water interface. This work is supported by DST-UKIERI (IND/CONT/E/14-15/370 & DST/INT/UK/P-92/14) project. Matching Disparate Image Pairs Using Shape-Aware ConvNets
An end-to-end trainable ConvNet architecture, that learns to harness the
power of shape representation for matching disparate image pairs, is proposed.
Disparate image pairs are deemed those that exhibit strong affine variations in
scale, viewpoint and projection parameters accompanied by the presence of
partial or complete occlusion of objects and extreme variations in ambient
illumination. Under these challenging conditions, neither local nor global
feature-based image matching methods, when used in isolation, have been
observed to be effective. The proposed correspondence determination scheme for
matching disparate images exploits high-level shape cues that are derived from
low-level local feature descriptors, thus combining the best of both worlds. A
graph-based representation for the disparate image pair is generated by
constructing an affinity matrix that embeds the distances between feature
points in two images, thus modeling the correspondence determination problem as
one of graph matching. The eigenspectrum of the affinity matrix, i.e., the
learned global shape representation, is then used to further regress the
transformation or homography that defines the correspondence between the source
image and target image. The proposed scheme is shown to yield state-of-the-art
results for both, coarse-level shape matching as well as fine point-wise
correspondence determination.Comment: First two authors contributed equally, to Appear in the IEEE Winter

An Automated Mobile Game-based Screening Tool for Patients with Alcohol Dependence
Traditional methods for screening and diagnosis of alcohol dependence are typically administered by trained clinicians in medical settings and often rely on interview responses. These self-reports can be unintentionally or deliberately false, and misleading answers can, in turn, lead to inaccurate assessment and diagnosis. In this study, we examine the use of user-game interaction patterns on mobile games to develop an automated diagnostic and screening tool for alcohol-dependent patients. Our approach relies on the capture of interaction patterns during gameplay, while potential patients engage with popular mobile games on smartphones. The captured signals include gameplay performance, touch gestures, and device motion, with the intention of identifying patients with alcohol dependence. We evaluate the classification performance of various supervised learning algorithms on data collected from 40 patients and 40 age-matched healthy adults. The results show that patients with alcohol dependence can be automatically identified accurately using the ensemble of touch, device motion, and gameplay performance features on 3-minute samples (accuracy=0.95, sensitivity=0.95, and specificity=0.95). The present findings provide strong evidence suggesting the potential use of user-game interaction metrics on existing mobile games as discriminant features for developing an implicit measure to identify alcohol dependence conditions. In addition to supporting healthcare professionals in clinical decision-making, the game-based self-screening method could be used as a novel strategy to promote alcohol dependence screening, especially outside of clinical settings
Long lasting pain hypersensitivity following ligation of the tendon of the masseter muscle in rats: A model of myogenic orofacial pain

Abstract

Background

A major subgroup of patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders have masticatory muscle hypersensitivity. To study myofacial temporomandibular pain, a number of preclinical models have been developed to induce myogenic pain of the masseter muscle, one of the four muscles involved in mastication. The currently used models, however, generate pain that decreases over time and only lasts from hours to weeks and hence are not suitable for studying chronicity of the myogenic pain in TMJ disorders. Here we report a model of constant myogenic orofacial pain that lasts for months.

Results

The model involves unilateral ligation of the tendon of the anterior superficial part of the rat masseter muscle (TASM). The ligation of the TASM was achieved with two chromic gut (4.0) ligatures via an intraoral approach. Nocifensive behavior of the rat was assessed by probing the skin site above the TASM with a series of von Frey filaments. The response frequencies were determined and an EF50 value, defined as the von Frey filament force that produces a 50% response frequency, was derived and used as a measure of mechanical sensitivity. Following TASM ligation, the EF50 of the injured side was significantly reduced and maintained throughout the 8-week observation period, suggesting the presence of mechanical hyperalgesia/allodynia. In sham-operated rats, the EF50 of the injured side was transiently reduced for about a week, likely due to injury produced by the surgery. Somatotopically relevant Fos protein expression was indentified in the subnucleus caudalis of the spinal trigeminal sensory complex. In the same region, persistent upregulation of NMDA receptor NR1 phosphorylation and protein expression and increased expression of glial markers glial fibrillary acidic protein (astroglia) and CD11b (microglia) were found. Morphine (0.4-8 mg/kg, s.c.) and duloxetine (0.4-20 mg/kg, i.p.), a selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, produced dose-dependent attenuation of hyperalgesia.

Conclusions

Ligation injury of the TASM in rats led to long-lasting and constant mechanical hypersensitivity of myogenic origin. The model will be particularly useful in studying the chronicity of myogenic pain TMJ disorders. The model can also be adapted to other regions of the body for studying pathology of painful tendinopathy seen in sports injury, muscle overuse, and rheumatoid arthritis.</p
Linkages between environmental factors (WASH and energy) and Infant and Young Child Feeding practices in rural India: implications for cross-sectoral interventions for child health
As factors influencing the health and well-being of children are complex and cross-sectoral, integrated interventions are required to improve child health and hence address the Sustainable Development Goals. This paper explores linkages between environmental factors, feeding practices and potential infection pathways in India. The PANChSHEEEL project is a participatory interdisciplinary study, designed to explore HEEE (Health, Education, Engineering and Environment) factors influencing Infant and Young Child Feeding practices. This study uses data from observational transect walks and 445 household interviews from nine villages in Banswara district in India. Using the socio-ecological model, this study demonstrates how the lack of access to and quality of water resources, poor access to sanitation and hygiene practices, access to cook fuels and flooding can influence feeding practices. The study finds that access to water, sanitation and cooking fuels can affect the preparation of food, contaminate water and food and place added time burden on caregivers. For infants, insufficient and contaminated water can lead to a higher risk of infection, diarrhoea and ultimately malnutrition. Recommendations include efforts to address waterlogging, promote safe storage of water, establish a water quality regime with stakeholders and develop appropriate, affordable and acceptable sanitation solutions
Successful bone marrow transplantation in a patient with Diamond-Blackfan anemia with co-existing Duchenne muscular dystrophy: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Diamond-Blackfan anemia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are two rare congenital anomalies. Both anomalies occurring in the same child is extremely rare. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a well-established therapy for Diamond-Blackfan anemia. However, in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, stem cell therapy still remains experimental.

Case presentation

We report the case of a nine-year-old boy of north Indian descent with Diamond-Blackfan anemia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy who underwent successful allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. He is transfusion-independent, and his Duchenne muscular dystrophy has shown no clinical deterioration over the past 45 months. His creatine phosphokinase levels have significantly decreased to 300 U/L from 14,000 U/L pre-transplant. The patient is 100% donor chimera in the hematopoietic system, and his muscle tissue has shown 8% to 10.4% cells of donor origin.

Conclusion

Our patient's Diamond-Blackfan anemia was cured by allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The interesting clinical observation of a possible benefit in Duchenne muscular dystrophy cannot be ruled out. However, further clinical follow-up with serial muscle biopsies and molecular studies are needed to establish this finding.</p

The age of anxiety? It depends where you look: changes in STAI trait anxiety, 1970–2010
Purpose
Population-level surveys suggest that anxiety has been increasing in several nations, including the USA and UK. We sought to verify the apparent anxiety increases by looking for systematic changes in mean anxiety questionnaire scores from research publications.
Methods
We analyzed all available mean State–Trait Anxiety Inventory scores published between 1970 and 2010. We collected 1703 samples, representing more than 205,000 participants from 57 nations.
Results
Results showed a significant anxiety increase worldwide, but the pattern was less clear in many individual nations. Our analyses suggest that any increase in anxiety in the USA and Canada may be limited to students, anxiety has decreased in the UK, and has remained stable in Australia.
Conclusions
Although anxiety may have increased worldwide, it might not be increasing as dramatically as previously thought, except in specific populations, such as North American students. Our results seem to contradict survey results from the USA and UK in particular. We do not claim that our results are more reliable than those of large population surveys. However, we do suggest that mental health surveys and other governmental sources of disorder prevalence data may be partially biased by changing attitudes toward mental health: if respondents are more aware and less ashamed of their anxiety, they are more likely to report it to survey takers. Analyses such as ours provide a useful means of double-checking apparent trends in large population surveys
Recurrent hemarthrosis after total knee arthroplasty
This report describes a case of spontaneous recurrent hemarthrosis of the knee that presented 4 weeks after total knee arthroplasty. Femoral arteriography showed a false aneurysm of a branch of the inferior lateral geniculate artery. Therapeutic embolization of the arterial branch was performed using three platinum coils with good clinical result and good knee joint function. Hemarthrosis has not recurred since embolization
