    Relations of blood lead levels to echocardiographic left ventricular structure and function in preschool children

    Lead (Pb) has been proved to exert adverse effect on human cardiovascular system. However, the cardiotoxicity of Pb on children is still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate left ventricular (LV) structure and function, by using echocardiographic indices, in order to elucidate the effect of Pb on low-grade inflammation related to left ventricle in healthy preschool children. We recruited a total of 486 preschool children, 310 from Guiyu (e-waste-exposed area) and 176 from Haojiang (reference area). Blood Pb levels, complete blood counts, and LV parameters were evaluated. Associations between blood Pb levels and LV parameters and peripheral leukocyte counts were analyzed using linear regression models. The median blood level of Pb and the counts of white blood cells (WBCs), monocytes, and neutrophils were higher in exposed group. In addition, the exposed group showed smaller left ventricle (including interventricular septum, LV posterior wall, and LV mass index) and impaired LV systolic function (including LV fractional shortening and LV ejection fraction) regardless gender. After adjustment for confounding factors, elevated blood Pb levels were significantly associated with higher counts of WBCs and neutrophils, and lower levels of LV parameters. Furthermore, counts of WBCs, monocytes, and neutrophils were negatively correlated with LV parameters. Taken together, smaller left ventricle and impaired systolic function were found in e-waste-exposed children and associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and elevated blood Pb levels. It indicates that the heart health of e-waste-exposed children is at risk due to the long-term environmental chemical insults. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Prescribed Performance Fuzzy Adaptive Output-Feedback Control for Nonlinear Stochastic Systems

    A prescribed performance fuzzy adaptive output-feedback control approach is proposed for a class of single-input and single-output nonlinear stochastic systems with unmeasured states. Fuzzy logic systems are used to identify the unknown nonlinear system, and a fuzzy state observer is designed for estimating the unmeasured states. Based on the backstepping recursive design technique and the predefined performance technique, a new fuzzy adaptive output-feedback control method is developed. It is shown that all the signals of the resulting closed-loop system are bounded in probability and the tracking error remains an adjustable neighborhood of the origin with the prescribed performance bounds. A simulation example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    A Comparison of MERRA and NARR Reanalysis Datasets with the DOE ARM SGP Continuous Forcing data

    In this study, the atmospheric state, precipitation, cloud fraction, and radiative fluxes from Modern Era Retrospective-analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) and North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) are collected and compared with the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) continuous forcing during the period 1999-2001. For the atmospheric state, the three datasets have excellent agreement for the horizontal wind components and air temperature. NARR and ARM have generally good agreement for humidity, except for several biases in the PBL and in the upper troposphere. MERRA, on the other hand, suffers from a year-round negative bias in humidity except for the month of June. For the vertical pressure velocity, significant differences exist with the largest biases occurring during the spring upwelling and summer downwelling periods. Although NARR and MERRA share many resemblances to each other, ARM outperforms these reanalyses in terms of correlation with cloud fraction. Because the ARM forcing is constrained by observed precipitation that gives the adequate mass, heat, and moisture budgets, much of the precipitation (specifically during the late spring/early summer) is caused by smaller-scale forcing that is not captured by the reanalyses. Both NARR and MERRA capture the seasonal variation of CF observed by ARM radar-lidar and GOES with high correlations (0.92-0.78), but having negative biases of 14% and 3%, respectively. Compared to the ARM observations, MERRA shows a better agreement for both SW and LW fluxes except for LW-down (due to a negative bias in water vapor), NARR has significant positive bias for SW-down and negative bias for LW-down under clear- and all-sky conditions . The NARR biases result from a combination of too few clouds and a lack of sufficient extinction by aerosols and water vapor in the atmospheric column. The results presented here represent only one location for a limited time period, and more comparisons at different locations and longer time period are needed

    RadCloud: Real-Time High-Resolution Point Cloud Generation Using Low-Cost Radars for Aerial and Ground Vehicles

    In this work, we present RadCloud, a novel real time framework for directly obtaining higher-resolution lidar-like 2D point clouds from low-resolution radar frames on resource-constrained platforms commonly used in unmanned aerial and ground vehicles (UAVs and UGVs, respectively); such point clouds can then be used for accurate environmental mapping, navigating unknown environments, and other robotics tasks. While high-resolution sensing using radar data has been previously reported, existing methods cannot be used on most UAVs, which have limited computational power and energy; thus, existing demonstrations focus on offline radar processing. RadCloud overcomes these challenges by using a radar configuration with 1/4th of the range resolution and employing a deep learning model with 2.25x fewer parameters. Additionally, RadCloud utilizes a novel chirp-based approach that makes obtained point clouds resilient to rapid movements (e.g., aggressive turns or spins), which commonly occur during UAV flights. In real-world experiments, we demonstrate the accuracy and applicability of RadCloud on commercially available UAVs and UGVs, with off-the-shelf radar platforms on-board.Comment: ©\copyright 2024 IEEE. The simulated case study is based on measurements obtained during the 2006 Tropical Warm Pool - International Cloud Experiment (TWP-ICE) led by the U. S. department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program. The modeling intercomparison study is based on objectives developed in concert with the Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate (SPARC) program and the GEWEX cloud system study (GCSS) program.     Diagnosing the Ice Crystal Enhancement Factor in the Tropics

    Recent modeling studies have revealed that ice crystal number concentration is one of the dominant factors in the effect of clouds on radiation. Since the ice crystal enhancement factor and ice nuclei concentration determine the concentration, they are both important in quantifying the contribution of increased ice nuclei to global warming. In this study, long-term cloud-resolving model (CRM) simulations are compared with field observations to estimate the ice crystal enhancement factor in tropical and midlatitudinal clouds, respectively. It is found that the factor in tropical clouds is ~10 3-104 times larger than that of mid-latitudinal ones, which makes physical sense because entrainment and detrainment in the Tropics are much stronger than in middle latitudes. The effect of entrainment/detrainment on the enhancement factor, especially in tropical clouds, suggests that cloud microphysical parameterizations should be coupled with subgrid turbulence parameterizations within CRMs to obtain a more accurate depiction of cloud-radiative forcing

    Radiomics nomogram for prediction of glypican-3 positive hepatocellular carcinoma based on hepatobiliary phase imaging

    IntroductionThe hepatobiliary-specific phase can help in early detection of changes in lesion tissue density, internal structure, and microcirculatory perfusion at the microscopic level and has important clinical value in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, this study aimed to construct a preoperative nomogram for predicting the positive expression of glypican-3 (GPC3) based on gadoxetic acid-enhanced (Gd-EOB-DTPA) MRI hepatobiliary phase (HBP) radiomics, imaging and clinical feature.MethodsWe retrospectively included 137 patients with HCC who underwent Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI and subsequent liver resection or puncture biopsy at our hospital from January 2017 to December 2021 as training cohort. Subsequently collected from January 2022 to June 2023 as a validation cohort of 49 patients, Radiomic features were extracted from the entire tumor region during the HBP using 3D Slicer software and screened using a t-test and least absolute shrinkage selection operator algorithm (LASSO). Then, these features were used to construct a radiomics score (Radscore) for each patient, which was combined with clinical factors and imaging features of the HBP to construct a logistic regression model and subsequent nomogram model. The clinicoradiologic, radiomics and nomogram models performance was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC), calibration, and decision curve analysis (DCA). In the validation cohort,the nomogram performance was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC).ResultsIn the training cohort, a total of 1688 radiomics features were extracted from each patient. Next, radiomics with ICCs<0.75 were excluded, 1587 features were judged as stable using intra- and inter-class correlation coefficients (ICCs), 26 features were subsequently screened using the t-test, and 11 radiomics features were finally screened using LASSO. The nomogram combining Radscore, age, serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) >400ng/mL, and non-smooth tumor margin (AUC=0.888, sensitivity 77.7%, specificity 91.2%) was superior to the radiomics (AUC=0.822, sensitivity 81.6%, specificity 70.6%) and clinicoradiologic (AUC=0.746, sensitivity 76.7%, specificity 64.7%) models, with good consistency in calibration curves. DCA also showed that the nomogram had the highest net clinical benefit for predicting GPC3 expression.In the validation cohort, the ROC curve results showed predicted GPC3-positive expression nomogram model AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.800, 58.5%, and 100.0%, respectively.ConclusionHBP radiomics features are closely associated with GPC3-positive expression, and combined clinicoradiologic factors and radiomics features nomogram may provide an effective way to non-invasively and individually screen patients with GPC3-positive HCC
