Roles and Influences of Kerosene on Chalcopyrite Flotation in MgCl2 Solution: EDLVO and DFT Approaches

    No full text
Seawater has been increasingly used as an alternative to freshwater in mineral flotation. Although previous studies suggest that Mg2+ ions in seawater have the primary negative roles in chalcopyrite flotation, insufficient work has been conducted to understand the effects of kerosene as a collector in chalcopyrite flotation. In this study, the influence of kerosene emulsion on chalcopyrite floatability in a solution containing Mg2+ was systematically investigated. The results indicated that the addition of kerosene significantly reduced the adsorption of hydrophilic Mg-precipitates onto the chalcopyrite’s surface. In addition to contact angle, zeta potential, optical microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses, extended Derjguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (EDLVO) theory and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to understand the influencing mechanisms of kerosene on chalcopyrite flotation. The adsorption energies showed an order of kerosene and Mg(OH)2 > kerosene and chalcopyrite > chalcopyrite and Mg(OH)2, indicating kerosene was preferentially adsorbed on the Mg(OH)2 surface, forming agglomerates and therefore reducing the adsorption of Mg(OH)2 precipitates onto the chalcopyrite’s surface. In addition, hydrophobic agglomerates were also formed due to the attachment of kerosene to the chalcopyrite’s surface when additional kerosene was added, further enhancing chalcopyrite floatability

The Role of Noncoding RNA in Airway Allergic Diseases through Regulation of T Cell Subsets

    No full text
Allergic rhinitis and asthma are common airway allergic diseases, the incidence of which has increased annually in recent years. The human body is frequently exposed to allergens and environmental irritants that trigger immune and inflammatory responses, resulting in altered gene expression. Mounting evidence suggested that epigenetic alterations were strongly associated with the progression and severity of allergic diseases. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are a class of transcribed RNA molecules that cannot be translated into polypeptides and consist of three major categories, microRNAs (miRNAs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs). Previous studies showed that ncRNAs were involved in the physiopathological mechanisms of airway allergic diseases and contributed to their occurrence and development. This article reviews the current state of understanding of the role of noncoding RNAs in airway allergic diseases, highlights the limitations of recent studies, and outlines the prospects for further research to facilitate the clinical translation of noncoding RNAs as therapeutic targets and biomarkers

Evaluation of Intralymphatic Immunotherapy in Allergic Rhinitis Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Background. Intralymphatic immunotherapy (ILIT) is short-course administration of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). This study is aimed at assessing the clinical efficacy and safety of ILIT in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods. MEDLINE, PUBMED, and Cochrane Library were used to conduct electronic searches for clinical trials comparing ILIT and placebo in patients with AR. The final search took place on August 24, 2022. Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. The outcomes included combined symptom and medication scores (CSMS), visual analog scale (VAS), allergic rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life (RQLQ), Skin-prick test (SPT), and adverse events (AEs). Data were synthesized as mean difference (MD)/standard mean difference (SMD) or risk difference (RD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results. Thirteen studies (454 participants) were included in this study. The ILIT group had better clinical improvement on the CSMS (random effects model, SMD-0.85, 95% CI [-1.58, -0.11], P=0.02) and RQLQ (fixed-effects model, MD-0.42, 95% CI [0.69, 0.15], P=0.003) than the placebo group. The booster injection was beneficial for CSMS (P<0.0001), and the 4-week injection interval was superior to the 2-week injection period for improving VAS (P<0.0001). Local swelling or erythema was the main AE following injection (random effects model, RD 0.16, 95% CI [0.05, 0.27], P=0.005). Discussion. For individuals with AR, ILIT is safe and effective. ILIT alleviates clinical symptoms and reduces pharmaceutical consumption without causing severe AEs. However, the validity of this study is compromised by the substantial heterogeneity and risk of bias in the included researches. RegistrationCRD42022355329

Lead Induced Ototoxicity and Neurotoxicity in Adult Guinea Pig

    No full text
Lead exposure causes or aggravates hearing damage to human or animal, but the detailed effects of lead exposure on auditory system including injury sites of the cochlea in mammal remain controversy. To investigate the effect of chronic lead exposure on auditory system, 40 adult guinea pigs with normal hearing were randomly divided into five groups. They were fed 2 mmol/L lead acetate in drinking water for 0, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days (n = 8), respectively. Lead concentrations in blood, cochlea, and brainstem were measured. Auditory function was measured by auditory brainstem response (ABR) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE). The morphology of cochlea and brainstem was observed, and expression of autophagy-related protein in brainstem was also assessed. The blood lead concentration reached a high level at the 15th day and kept stable, but the lead level in brainstem and cochlear tissue increased obviously at the 60th day and 90th day of lead exposure, respectively. There was no significant difference in the morphology of hair cells and stria vascularis (SV) among these five groups, but the number of spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) gradually decreased after 60 days. The differences of ABR thresholds and DPOAE amplitudes were not statistically significant among each group, but I wave latency, III latency, and I-III wave interval of ABR were delayed with the prolonging of time of lead exposure. The expressions of autophagy-related protein ATG5, ATG6, and LC3B in brainstem were increased after 30 days. These results suggest that the key target of lead toxicity was the auditory nerve conduction pathway including SGNs and brainstem, rather than cochlear hair cells and SV. Autophagy may play a very important role in lead toxicity to auditory nervous system

Identification of Novel Biomarkers for Evaluating Disease Severity in House-Dust-Mite-Induced Allergic Rhinitis by Serum Metabolomics

The aim of this study was to identify differences in serum metabolomics profiles of house-dust-mite (HDM)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) patients compared to controls and to explore novel biomarkers reflecting disease severity. Serum samples were collected from 29 healthy controls and HDM-induced 72 AR patients, including 30 mild patients (MAR) and 42 moderate to severe AR patients (MSAR). Metabolomics detection was performed, and orthogonal partial least square discriminate analysis was applied to assess the differences between AR patients and controls and for subgroups based on disease severity. These analysis results successfully revealed distinct metabolite signatures which distinguished MAR patients and MSAR patients from controls. MSAR patients also could be discriminated from MAR patients based on their metabolic fingerprints. Most observed metabolite changes were related to glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and fatty acid metabolism. Levels of sarcosine, sphingosine-1-phosphate, cytidine, and linoleic acid significantly correlated with the total nasal symptom score and visual analogue scale in AR patients. These results suggest that metabolomics profiling may provide novel insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms of HDM-induced AR and contribute to its evaluation of disease severity
