    Academic Burnout in Vocational High School Students

    The objectives of this study were: 1) to describe the level of student academic burnout, 2) to analyze differences in student academic burnout based on gender, major, class, and ethnicity. This study uses a quantitative method with a survey design. The population is 570 students of SMK Negeri 3 Singkawang. Then, 287 students (81 male and 206 female) were taken as a sample using simple random sampling technique. The instrument used in data collection is the academic burnout scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive test and univariate test. The results showed that the students academic burnout was at a moderate level which was dominated by the cynism aspect.     Performance Evaluation of Private Commercial Banks of Bangladesh: A Trend Analysis

    The study revealed the trend analysis of the private commercial banks and given an overview of the performance of private commercial banks of Bangladesh. Nowadays, the banking sector is the “lifeblood” of all economic activity. The study is empirical. To get the proper understanding about the trend of different variables such as, investment loan & advancement, total asset, total liability, total equity, profit after tax, return on investment, return on asset, and return on equity from 2013 to 2017 the sample was extracted from the scheduled commercial banks. The result shows that the banking system of Bangladesh is not running at a normal pace. The index of the various variable of PCBs has progressed in some years, but again it has been delayed for the next time. The ROI and the ROA result show the best output in 2014 and the worst in 2017. On the other side, the best return on equity shows in 2014, but it is in the lowest position in 2015 because of a sudden increase in an equity position. The trend of profit after tax is like a wave. In 2014 and 2016 it is increased than the last year. On the other hand, in 2013, 2015 & 2017 it is decreased in comparison to the previous year. The data shows that the PAT is rotated within 15,000 to 20000 million taka. It is studied that, the growth and development, as well as the performance trend, is not rhythmic. PCBs should get the proper rhythm of their development, and for the development of the state

    Literacy skills are very important abilities for students and are being encouraged to do so as a necessary prerequisite for lifelong learning. Because literacy skills are abilities that can be used to empower and improve the quality of individuals, families, communities, and countries. This study aims to (1) describe students' reading literacy and mathematical literacy skills based on the level of self-confidence of students in schools accredited A and B, as well as male and female students; (2) to test the comparability of reading literacy, mathematical literacy, and self-confidence based on the level of school accreditation and gender. The research method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. The sample in this study was selected using cluster sampling. The sample consisted of two public schools accredited A and B, and two private schools accredited A and B. The instruments in this study were reading literacy questions, mathematical literacy questions, student self-confidence questionnaires, and interview guidelines. The conclusions in this research are: (1) the descriptions are: (a) For schools with A accreditation, only confident students can process gathering information, processing information, and communicating information on reading literacy, while for mathematical literacy students who are confident can carry out the process Devising Strategies for Solving Problems indicators. For schools with B accreditation, students who are confident, confident enough, and less confident have carried out all the reading literacy processes, but there are still some mistakes and not according to the concept, while for mathematical literacy, students who are confident and confident enough can carry out process indicator Devising Strategies for Solving Problems. (b) For male students and female students who are confident, confident enough, and less confident to carry out the process of gathering information, processing information, and communicating information on reading literacy but still make some mistakes and do not fit the concept. As for mathematical literacy, confident female students can carry out the Communication process and Devising Strategies for Solving Problems. (2) For the comparison test, namely: (a) There is no difference in reading literacy between students from A and B accredited schools; (b) There are differences in mathematical literacy between students from A and B accredited schools; (c) There are differences in reading literacy and mathematical literacy between male students and female students; (d) There is no level of student confidence based on school accreditation and gender

    Vincristine induced peripheral neuropathy in children undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia during induction

    Background: Vincristine is an anticancer agent administered to all children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and peripheral neuropathy is the major dose-limiting toxicity of this therapy. As cure rates of childhood ALL exceeds 80%, therefore treatment-related toxicities need to be reduced. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathy (VIPN) in children with ALL undergoing induction chemotherapy. Methods: A case-control study was conducted from September 2017 to August 2018 in the Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Eighty newly diagnosed ALL and 35 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases aged 5 to 17 years with no pre-existing neurological abnormality were recruited. To assess the peripheral neuropathy, we used pediatric-modified total neuropathy score and National Cancer Institute- Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI-CTCAE), version-04 grade. Results: Among ALL patients, 29.2% developed peripheral neuropathy compared to 10% in AML control group (P=0.04). Higher proportion (57.1%) of peripheral neuropathy was found in age below 10 years (P<0.001). There was no significant association of peripheral neuropathy with sex and body mass index of the patients. Conclusion: Almost 3 in 10 patients developed VIPN during the induction therapy which is significantly higher in age below 10 years compared to ≥ 10 years.   Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Journal 2023;16(1): 02-07

    Landslide initiation and runout susceptibility modeling in the context of hill cutting and rapid urbanization: a combined approach of weights of evidence and spatial multi-criteria

    Rainfall induced landslides are a common threat to the communities living on dangerous hill-slopes in Chittagong Metropolitan Area, Bangladesh. Extreme population pressure, indiscriminate hill cutting, increased precipitation events due to global warming and associated unplanned urbanization in the hills are exaggerating landslide events. The aim of this article is to prepare a scientifically accurate landslide susceptibility map by combining landslide initiation and runout maps. Land cover, slope, soil permeability, surface geology, precipitation, aspect, and distance to hill cut, road cut, drainage and stream network factor maps were selected by conditional independence test. The locations of 56 landslides were collected by field surveying. A weight of evidence (WoE) method was applied to calculate the positive (presence of landslides) and negative (absence of landslides) factor weights. A combination of analytical hierarchical process (AHP) and fuzzy membership standardization (weighs from 0 to 1) was applied for performing a spatial multi-criteria evaluation. Expert opinion guided the decision rule for AHP. The Flow-R tool that allows modeling landslide runout from the initiation sources was applied. The flow direction was calculated using the modified Holmgren’s algorithm. The AHP landslide initiation and runout susceptibility maps were used to prepare a combined landslide susceptibility map. The relative operating characteristic curve was used for model validation purpose. The accuracy of WoE, AHP, and combined susceptibility map was calculated 96%, 97%, and 98%, respectively

    Creative destruction in science

    Drawing on the concept of a gale of creative destruction in a capitalistic economy, we argue that initiatives to assess the robustness of findings in the organizational literature should aim to simultaneously test competing ideas operating in the same theoretical space. In other words, replication efforts should seek not just to support or question the original findings, but also to replace them with revised, stronger theories with greater explanatory power. Achieving this will typically require adding new measures, conditions, and subject populations to research designs, in order to carry out conceptual tests of multiple theories in addition to directly replicating the original findings. To illustrate the value of the creative destruction approach for theory pruning in organizational scholarship, we describe recent replication initiatives re-examining culture and work morality, working parents\u2019 reasoning about day care options, and gender discrimination in hiring decisions. Significance statement It is becoming increasingly clear that many, if not most, published research findings across scientific fields are not readily replicable when the same method is repeated. Although extremely valuable, failed replications risk leaving a theoretical void\u2014 reducing confidence the original theoretical prediction is true, but not replacing it with positive evidence in favor of an alternative theory. We introduce the creative destruction approach to replication, which combines theory pruning methods from the field of management with emerging best practices from the open science movement, with the aim of making replications as generative as possible. In effect, we advocate for a Replication 2.0 movement in which the goal shifts from checking on the reliability of past findings to actively engaging in competitive theory testing and theory building.     Examining the generalizability of research findings from archival data

    This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time periods and 57% emerged in other geographies. Overall, only limited empirical evidence emerged for context sensitivity. In a forecasting survey, independent scientists were able to anticipate which effects would find support in tests in new samples

    Clustering Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclone Tracks by the Standard Deviational Ellipse

    The standard deviational ellipse is useful to analyze the shape and the length of a tropical cyclone (TC) track. Cyclone intensity at each six-hour position is used as the weight at that location. Only named cyclones in the Indian Ocean since 1981 are considered for this study. The K-means clustering algorithm is used to cluster Indian Ocean cyclones based on the five parameters: x-y coordinates of the mean center, variances along zonal and meridional directions, and covariance between zonal and meridional locations of the cyclone track. Four clusters are identified across the Indian Ocean; among them, only one cluster is in the North Indian Ocean (NIO) and the rest of them are in the South Indian Ocean (SIO). Other characteristics associated with each cluster, such as wind speed, lifespan, track length, track orientation, seasonality, landfall, category during landfall, total accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), and cyclone trend, are analyzed and discussed. Cyclone frequency and energy of Cluster 4 (in the NIO) have been following a linear increasing trend. Cluster 4 also has a higher number of landfall cyclones compared to other clusters. Cluster 2, located in the middle of the SIO, is characterized by the long track, high intensity, long lifespan, and high accumulated energy. Sea surface temperature (SST) and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) associated with genesis of TCs are also examined in each cluster. Cyclone genesis is co-located with the negative OLR anomaly and the positive SST anomaly. Localized SST anomalies are associated with clusters in the SIO; however, TC geneses of Cluster 4 are associated with SSTA all over the Indian Ocean (IO)
