In 21st century learning, students use educational technologies to apply knowledge to new situations, analyse information, collaborate, solve problems, and make decisions. Utilising emerging technologies, to provide expanded learning opportunities, is critical to the success of future generations. In this paper, the author will share the findings on the usage of CIDOS and Social Network Sites in teaching and learning processes at Malaysian Polytechnics. Two sets of questionnaires were distributed to a group of 84 diploma students and 41 lecturers from Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Politeknik Merlimau, Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, and Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah. The results of the study show the existence of communication and interaction difficulties in existing Learning Management Systems (LMS). As a recommendation for future research, it is suggested to integrate current LMS with Facebook to support Online Collaborative Learning (OCL)

The Development of Online Project Based Collaborative Learning Using ADDIE Model

AbstractIn the 21st century, educators are utilising emerging technologies to develop not only knowledge of graduates, but also their soft skills in order to enhance competencies parallel with employer's requirements. Collaborative learning has been proven in promoting soft skills development. However, the feedback from employers is the opposite. It shows that collaboration does not happen naturally in a group. In previous studies, researchers have identified factors and elements needed to develop effective collaborative online learning and proposed an Online Collaborative Project based Collaborative Learning (OPBCL) model. In this study, based on OPBCL model, a prototype is designed using the ADDIE model. To carry out the study, the prototype needs to work properly. Therefore, Alpha, Beta, and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) must be conducted. This study also will show the process of testing to ensure the functionality of a prototype when running the actual study. The results are expected to show that the prototype is ready to be tested in the actual study. It is hope that this study will give much significance to other researchers regarding the importance of conducting UAT of the prototypes developed prior to the research study

Preliminary analysis of problem solving method in online PBL (Case study in IT security subject at UTEM)

    Get PDF
The rapid development of information and communication technology nowadays indirectly affected the development of education in Malaysia. Conventionally, the teaching and learning session is teacher-centred style, but gradually change to student-centred style. Case study of this project is Information Technology Security (IT Security) subject for third year students in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. The problem solving first part of this paper will discuss about method, problem statement and objective of the research. This paper also will explain the research framework and research question. Finally, this paper will discuss the testing plan implementation for this research

Learning Approach For Personalized Learning Environment (PLE): Preliminary Analysis

    Get PDF
This paper reports the preliminary analysis findings that aimed to investigate student‟s learning styles that suitable for learning Form 2 Science subject using Personalized Learning Environment (PLE). An additional problem is that even learners from a similar learning context are not identical: they may be at different points of the learning process, or may have different learning styles. It will focus on the student perspective because they are so often ignored when it comes to the introduction of new technologies. With learners coming into schools, colleges and universities with increasingly smart technologies and schools and ministries of education, colleges and universities around the world beginning to add computer to the mix of technologies in schools. Learners expressed a desire for the integration of Science resources with their existing textbooks and online learning materials. It considers how they are using them and how this might differ from the suggested practice described in the literature and then considers what might be the implications for technology use in classrooms

Perceptions towards the Usage of Collaborative Learning in Teaching and Learning Processes at Malaysia Polytechnic.

It is difficult for a graduate to get employed, due to fierce competition within today’s career market. Most employers are primarily looking for good soft skills over academic achievements as selection criteria for selecting new employees. This paper shares the preliminary findings on the perceptions of students and lecturers on the use of Collaborative Learning in teaching and learning processes at Malaysia Polytechnic. In this study, two sets of questionnaires were distributed to 145 lecturers and 356 diploma students from Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Politeknik Merlimau, Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu, and Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah. All collected data was analysed using SPPS 19 software. The results show that even though lecturers used the collaborative learning method in their teaching and learning processes, the evaluation was only on the output product. The students felt that it was unfair for all members to get the same marks, and that the lecturers should award marks based only on the student’s contribution. Therefore, the development of soft skills will not happen if active collaboration does not occur

Development Of Personalized Learning Environment (PLE) For Malaysian School Environment Based On ADDIE Model

Personalized Learning Environment (PLE) is a new concept in designing and developing an online learning. PLE is more focused on individual learning rather than the instructor, facilities, resources and tools. PLE has also played an active role in improving the effectiveness of learning. This paper aims to share the development and preliminary findings on PLE in teaching Form 2 Science. The samples involved are Form 2 students at secondary schools. The study group was composed of 90 students. The topic chosen is Nutrition. In this study, the development process of the environment was examined according to the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate, Instructional Design Model (ADDIE). There are divided into three phases. Phase one is Analysis which includes literature survey and collection of preliminary analysis data. Second phase is Designing and Development which adopt ADDIE model as a basis for multimedia development. The last phase is Testing and Evaluation

Personalized Learning Environment (PLE): Need Analysis In Malaysian’s Secondary School

Recent years have witnessed how education has rapidly evolved into integration of technology or computer in the process of teaching and learning. As computer potentially enhances the process, this paper reports on the user need analysis on Science subject in Malaysian secondary schools that focus on Personalized Learning Environment (PLE), methods and materials and why PLE is needed. Several surveys were developed to explore the learning needs and goals as well as to construct the vision of PLE organization. It also presents the preliminary findings of a research in progress and the needs of PLE among the students. This study adapted the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation & Evaluation) model to closely monitor and involve with the learning phenomena in such an open online environment in which the researcher became a learner to participate in various activities of the courses, to interact with participants and to explore the process of learning and interaction. In the development and adaption of such environment, it is essentially vital that students’opinion and viewpoints are taken into consideration. The paper also highlights the importance of engaging the users with PLE. Keywords: Methodology; Need Analysis; Nutrition; PLE; Science

Factors That Affecting The Effective Online Collaborative Learning Environment

    Get PDF
Interest in collaboration is a natural outgrowth of the trend in education toward active learning. Many researchers have found advantages of collaborative learning; it improves academic performance, promotes soft skills development (communication, collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking skills) and increases satisfaction in the learning experience. However, several studies have reported the opposite. Therefore, this paper aims to determine the factors to be considered in creating an effective online collaborative learning environment. In order to achieve the aims, this study was conducted qualitatively in the form of a document review. The results indicate three main factors that affect the effectiveness of Online Collaborative Learning Environments as Learning Environment, Learning Design, and Learning Interaction. An Online Learning Interaction model is also proposed according to the results. This study will continue to determine the elements that can clarify all the factors which have been identified in this study
