    Let your students cheat on mathematics online exams: students’ perspectives

    The Covid-19 outbreak has an impact on the provision of education. One of them is the process of online assessment or examination. Difficulties occur during online exams; weak supervision can increase cheating behavior among students. Generally, teachers or lecturers think about how to prevent this behavior. However, what if they are allowed to "cheat" on the exam? What do they think? This paper discusses students' perceptions when they were allowed to access various sources during online math exams. What benefits do they get?. The survey was conducted on 78 students of the Mathematics Education Study Program of UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. The data obtained through a questionnaire were analyzed descriptively. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the students gave a positive response. The results of this study are expected to be a positive view of the weakness of supervision during online math exams, an idea/way to prevent cheating. In its application, both online learning and assessment, it is necessary to strengthen the character and self-concept of students

    A new approach of weighted gradient filter for denoising of medical images in the presence of Poisson noise

    Predlažemo ponderirani stupnjevani filtar za otklanjanje Poissonova šuma na rendgenskim slikama. U unaprijed definiranom prozoru izračunat je gradijent središnjeg piksela. Za izračunavanje vrijednosti gradijenta primijenjen je Gaussov ponderirani filtar. Predložena metoda je primijenjena na biomedicinske rendgenske slike, a zatim na različite uobičajene slike LENE i paprika. Rezultati pokazuju učinkovitost i bolju jasnoću slika uz primjenu ponderiranog stupnjevanog filtra. Uz to, predložena metoda je računalno vrlo učinkovita i brža od Non Local Mean (NLM) filtra koji predstavlja unaprijeđenu metodu za otklanjanje Poissonova šuma. Rezultati predložene metode su također bolji u odnosu na parametre za mjerenje performanse t.j. korelacije, Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Maximum Structural Similarity Index Measure (MSSIM) i Mean Square Error (MSE) nego uobičajeni Median, Wiener i NLM filter.We propose a Weighted Gradient Filter for denoising of Poisson noise in medical images. In a predefined window, gradient of the centre pixel is averaged out. Gaussian Weighted filter is used on all calculated gradient values. Proposed method is applied on biomedical images X-Rays and then on different general images of LENA and Peppers. Recovery results show that the proposed weighted gradient filter is efficient and has better visual appearance. Moreover, proposed method is computationally very efficient and faster than Non Local Mean (NLM) filter which is an advanced technique for Poisson noise removal. Proposed method results are also better in terms of performance measures parameters i.e. correlation, Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Maximum Structural Similarity Index Measure (MSSIM) and Mean Square Error (MSE) than the conventional Median, Wiener and NLM filter

    Robot Phonotaxis with Dynamic Sound-source Localization

    Abstract-We address two key goals pertaining to autonomous mobile robots: one, to develop fast accurate sensory capabilities -at present, the localization of sound sources -and second, the integration of such sensory modules with other robot functions, especially its motor control and navigation. A primary motivation for this work was to devise effective means to guide robotic navigation in environments with acoustic sources. We recently designed and built a biomimetic sound-source localization apparatus. In contrast to the popular use of time-of-arrival differences in free field microphone arrays, our system is based on the principles observed in nature, where directional acoustic sensing evolved to rely on diffraction about the head with only two ears. In this paper we present an integrated robot phonotaxis system which utilizes the robot's movement to resolve fronthack localization ambiguity. Our system achieves high angular localization acuity ( & Z 0 ) and it was successfully tested in localizing a single broadband source and moving towards it within a cluttered laboratory environment

    Cross-sectional imaging-based severity scoring of chronic pancreatitis: why it is necessary and how it can be done

    Chronic pancreatitis (CP) remains a diagnostic challenge as clinical symptoms are non-specific, histopathological appearances are varied and pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. Multiple classifications and grading systems have been proposed for CP, but none leverage the full capabilities of cross-sectional imaging modalities and are not widely accepted or validated. CT and MRI/MRCP are useful in identifying a wide spectrum of histopathological changes in CP and can also assess exocrine reserve of pancreas. Advanced MRI techniques such as T1 mapping and extracellular volume fraction can potentially identify early CP. Cross-sectional imaging-based severity scoring can quantify CP disease burden and may have positive implications for clinicians and researchers. In this review, we discuss the need for cross-sectional imaging-based severity scoring for CP, role of CT, and MRI/MRCP in assessment of CP and how these modalities can be used to obtain severity scoring for CP. We summarize relevant information from recently published CT and MRI/MRCP reporting standards for CP, and from international guidelines for cross-sectional imaging and severity scoring for CP

    Positive predictive value of ERBB2 copy number gain by tissue or circulating tumor DNA next-generation sequencing across advanced cancers

    BACKGROUND: The correlation of ERBB2 copy number gain (CNG) from tissue or circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) by next-generation sequencing (NGS) with standard HER2 tissue evaluation is not well understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients with ERBB2 CNG on commercial NGS. We described their clinical-pathologic features and calculated the positive predictive value (PPV) of ERBB2 CNG by NGS for HER2-positivity by IHC and FISH testing. RESULTS: 176 patients had NGS revealing an ERBB2 CNG (112 by tumor tissue and 91 by ctDNA). The cancer subtypes with the most cases with ERBB2 CNG by NGS were breast ( CONCLUSIONS: ERBB2 CNG by NGS is detected in numerous malignancies for which HER2 testing is not standard. Detection of ERBB2 CNG by tissue NGS and ctDNA has a high PPV for true HER2-positivity by standard IHC and/or FISH testing in breast cancer

    Biopsy confirmation of metastatic sites in breast cancer patients:clinical impact and future perspectives

    Determination of hormone receptor (estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 status in the primary tumor is clinically relevant to define breast cancer subtypes, clinical outcome,and the choice of therapy. Retrospective and prospective studies suggest that there is substantial discordance in receptor status between primary and recurrent breast cancer. Despite this evidence and current recommendations,the acquisition of tissue from metastatic deposits is not routine practice. As a consequence, therapeutic decisions for treatment in the metastatic setting are based on the features of the primary tumor. Reasons for this attitude include the invasiveness of the procedure and the unreliable outcome of biopsy, in particular for biopsies of lesions at complex visceral sites. Improvements in interventional radiology techniques mean that most metastatic sites are now accessible by minimally invasive methods, including surgery. In our opinion, since biopsies are diagnostic and changes in biological features between the primary and secondary tumors can occur, the routine biopsy of metastatic disease needs to be performed. In this review, we discuss the rationale for biopsy of suspected breast cancer metastases, review issues and caveats surrounding discordance of biomarker status between primary and metastatic tumors, and provide insights for deciding when to perform biopsy of suspected metastases and which one (s) to biopsy. We also speculate on the future translational implications for biopsy of suspected metastatic lesions in the context of clinical trials and the establishment of bio-banks of biopsy material taken from metastatic sites. We believe that such bio-banks will be important for exploring mechanisms of metastasis. In the future,advances in targeted therapy will depend on the availability of metastatic tissue

    Clinical practice guidelines on the management of variceal bleeding

    Gastroesophageal variceal bleeding occurs in 30 - 50% of patients of liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension, with 20-70% mortality in one year. Therefore, it is essential to screen these patients for varices and prevent first episode of bleeding by treating them with β-blockers or endoscopic variceal band ligation. Ideally, the patients with variceal bleeding should be treated in a unit where the personnel are familiar with the management of such patients and where routine therapeutic interventions can be undertaken. Proper management of such patients include: initial assessment, resuscitation, blood volume replacement, vasoactive agents, prevention of associated complications such as bacterial infections, hepatic encephalopathy, coagulopathy and thrombocytopenia, and specific therapy. Rebleeding occurs in about 60% patients within 2 years of their recovery from first variceal bleeding episode, with 33% mortality. Therefore, it is mandatory that all such patients must be started on combination of β-blockers and band ligation to prevent recurrence of bleeding. Patients who required shunt surgery/TIPSS to control the acute episode do not require further preventive measures.     Colorimetric sensing of uric acid based on sawdust-deposited silver nanoparticles via an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach

    Uric acid is directly linked to gout, arthritis, neurological, cardiovascular, and kidney-related disorders. It is a byproduct obtained from the breakdown of purines and a significant indicator of hyperuricemia observed in both urine and blood. In the absence of any enzyme, it's quite difficult to develop a novel, cost-effective, and clinical method for uric acid detection. Herein, we report a very simple, low-cost, and non-enzymatic method for the selective identification and quantification of uric acid using green synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The desired Ag NPs were synthesized by the hydrothermal method using Erythrina suberosa sawdust as a deagglomeration agent and Psidium guajava extract as a reductant. The synthesis of the sensing platform, i.e., sawdust-deposited Ag NPs, was confirmed through different techniques such as UV-Vis spectrophotometer, FTIR, XRD, EDX, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sawdust can offer a good, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective strategy to overcome the problem of agglomeration in nanoparticles. The enzyme mimic, with the help of H2O2, oxidizes the colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to oxidized TMB with a blue-green color. The addition of uric acid reduces the oxidized TMB to a colorless product, resulting in a colorimetric change. For quality improvement, different reaction parameters, including pH, time, TMB, and NPs concentration, were optimized. Our proposed sensor responds in linear ranges of 0.04–0.360 μM, with a limit of quantification of 0.01 μM and a limit of detection of 0.004 μM. The suggested enzyme mimic detected uric acid in blood samples, with particular specificity in the presence of competitive analytes

    Mitochondria Regulate Proliferation in Adult Cardiac Myocytes

    Newborn mammalian cardiomyocytes quickly transition from a fetal to an adult phenotype that utilizes mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation but loses mitotic capacity. We tested whether forced reversal of adult cardiomyocytes back to a fetal glycolytic phenotype would restore proliferative capacity. We deleted Uqcrfs1 (mitochondrial Rieske iron-sulfur protein, RISP) in hearts of adult mice. As RISP protein decreased, heart mitochondrial function declined, and glucose utilization increased. Simultaneously, the hearts underwent hyperplastic remodeling during which cardiomyocyte number doubled without cellular hypertrophy. Cellular energy supply was preserved, AMPK activation was absent, and mTOR activation was evident. In ischemic hearts with RISP deletion, new cardiomyocytes migrated into the infarcted region, suggesting the potential for therapeutic cardiac regeneration. RNA sequencing revealed upregulation of genes associated with cardiac development and proliferation. Metabolomic analysis revealed a decrease in α-ketoglutarate (required for TET-mediated demethylation) and an increase in S-adenosylmethionine (required for methyltransferase activity). Analysis revealed an increase in methylated CpGs near gene transcriptional start sites. Genes that were both differentially expressed and differentially methylated were linked to upregulated cardiac developmental pathways. We conclude that decreased mitochondrial function and increased glucose utilization can restore mitotic capacity in adult cardiomyocytes, resulting in the generation of new heart cells, potentially through the modification of substrates that regulate epigenetic modification of genes required for proliferation
