    Orbital cycles, differential subsidence and internal factors controlling the high-frequency sequence architecture in a Sinemurian shallow carbonate platform (Mallorca island, Spain)

    The ~125 m thick lower to lowermost upper Sinemurian peritidal to shallow subtidal platform carbonates in the Llevant Mountains of Mallorca (Spain) have been analysed from four stratigraphic sections, to provide new data on the hierarchical stacking pattern of high-frequency depositional sequences. Due to the fact that in shallow water environments the stacking of carbonate facies can be controlled by external (allocyclic) and internal (autocyclic) processes, deciphering the dominant controls on the high-frequency sequence architecture of these platforms is a challenge. The studied carbonates encompass a high variety of facies representative of open lagoon, internal bars, restricted lagoon and tidal flats with local beach sands. Based on a detailed analysis of vertical facies trends and bounding surfaces, large-, medium- and small-scale sequences have been identified within the long-term transgressive-regressive facies cycle defined by the entire succession. Large-scale sequences (~10–30 m thick) and medium-scale sequences (~1–10 m thick) are generally shallowing-upward sequences bounded by sharp facies changes to relatively deeper facies, and have been related to sea-level variations driven by long- (~400 kyr) and short- (~100 kyr) eccentricity cycles respectively. The overprinting of differential subsidence (probably related to extensional tectonic) and carbonate production and accumulation processes varied throughout time, controlling the lateral continuity and preservation potential of the ~100 kyr medium-scale sequences. Shallowing-upward, locally aggradational, small-scale sequences (~0.3 to 5 m thick) are very variable in number and thickness and cannot be correlated between sections, pointing out that their most important controlling factor was the internal processes (hiatuses and erosion related to subaerial exposure at the peritidal caps, lateral migration of internal bars, local wave and currents patterns, depositional and erosional processes related to spring tides and storms) in the frame of a complex mosaic of facies within the studied platform

    A proteomics study of chilling injury in tomato fruit, a low-temperature stress-induced physiological disorder affecting fruit quality

    Trabajo presentado a la conferencia "Molecular Basis of Plant Stress" celebrado en Bulgaria del 21 al 23 de septiembre de 2011.-- FP7 REGPOT Project "BioSupport".Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is the second most cultivated horticultural crop in the world in terms of harvested area and production, after the potato (FAOSTAT 2011, data from 2009). A main problem regarding its postharvest life is its sensitivity to low temperature stress during refrigerated storage, which constitutes a main obstacle for its long-term commercialization. This sensitivity is reflected in the physiopathy of chilling injury (CI), which negatively affects the final fruit quality. The main symptoms of CI-affected fruits are skin depressions, tissue decomposition and impaired ripening, which results in deficient flavour and aroma. Physiological and biochemical events involved in CI progress have been extensively described, but the precise molecular mechanisms that ultimately regulate the plant response to cold stress remain unclear. In order to investigate this response at molecular level in tomato fruit a proteomics strategy has undertaken. The proteome analysis provides a direct insight on the changes undergone by proteins, which are the major functional determinants of the cell machinery, in a certain biological situation such as low temperature stress. The protein expression profile of chilled tomato fruits has been compared with fruits stored at nonchilling temperature (control). The protein analysis has been performed by two-dimensional differential-in-gel-electrophoresis (2D-DIGE), and mass spectrometry of protein spots was applied to identify proteins differentially expressed. Comparative analysis revealed significant changes in abundance of 31 identified proteins between the proteomes of chilled and control fruits. Major modifications in the expression profile are related to those proteins specifically involved in stress (chaperonins and heat-shock proteins); cell wall biochemistry (hydrolytic enzymes), and carbohydrate metabolism (enzymes involved in glycolisis, tricarboxylic acids cycle, photosynthesis and sucrose biosynthesis).This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) through grant and PIE2009-40I080, and by the Council of Science and Technology from the Spanish Region of Murcia (Fundación SENECA) through grant no. 04553/GERM/06.Peer Reviewe

    Cultural dynamism and business vitality in medium-sized cities—evidence and proposals for sustainable development

    This work uses tools recently designed to conduct analyses and proposals around the cultural development of medium-sized cities. The Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor model, or CCCM, is first applied to the 81 cities in Spain with between 50, 000 and 100, 000 inhabitants. We also refer to the UNESCO Culture/2030 Indicators, specifically indicator 8 (Cultural companies), to in-vestigate whether cultural dynamism is related to business vitality in those cities. Our observation of the 29 CCCM indicators and the C3 index, which synthesizes cultural performance, is explained, and these data are complemented with cultural business data (on assets, benefits, and jobs) from a sample of 13, 204 firms. The C3 index values reveal significant differences in the cultural and creative performance of the selected cities according to their location (metropolitan or non-metropolitan) and their administrative rank. Moreover, when comparing the C3 index with the indicators on business activity, evidence indicates a clear positive relationship between cultural dynamism and firm vitality. These results support the contribution of culture to the sustainable development of me-dium-sized Spanish cities and further establish the suitability of the tools used to assist cities in designing appropriate cultural policies

    Vision-Based distraction analysis tested on a realistic driving simulator

    Abstract-This paper presents a non intrusive approach to obtain driver's face pose estimation based on stereo graylevel image processing. Face pose estimation is based on an automatic and incremental 3D model creation and its correct tracking. From this information, gaze focalization in the scene is calculated in order to detect driver distraction. Different distraction activities are inferred in a realistic simulator and a study of the incidence of these distracting activities in the driver's behaviour is carried out.     Compact duplexing for a 680-GHz radar using a waveguide orthomode transducer

    A compact 680-GHz waveguide orthomode transducer (OMT) and circular horn combination has been designed, tested, and characterized in a radar transceiver's duplexer. The duplexing capability is implemented by a hybrid waveguide quasi optical solution, combining a linear polarization OMT and an external grating polarizer. Isolation between the OMT's orthogonal ports' flanges was measured with a vector network analyzer to exceed 33 dB over a >10% bandwidth between 630 and 710 GHz. Calibrated Y-factor measurements using a mixer attached to the OMT ports reveal losses through the transmit and receive paths that sum to an average of 4.7 dB of two-way loss over 660-690 GHz. This is consistent with radar sensitivity measurements comparing the new OMT/horn with a quasi-optical wire grid beam splitter. Moreover, the radar performance assessment validates the OMT as a suitable compact substitute of the wire grid for the JPL's short-range 680-GHz imaging radar

    Revisión estratigráfica del Sinemuriense-Pliensbachiense inferior de Mallorca

    Los nuevos resultados obtenidos en estudios recientes del Sinemuriense-Pliensbachiense inferior (Formación Sóller) en la isla de Mallorca, aconsejan modificar su esquema litoestratigráfico. La nueva propuesta litoestratigráfica para este intervalo elimina la Formación Sóller y eleva sus tres miembros, anteriormente definidos como miembros Es Barraca, Sa Moleta y Es Racó, a la categoría de formación. Esta redefinición se apoya en los nuevos datos estratigráficos, sedimentológicos y bioestratigráficos obtenidos a partir del estudio detallado de la Formación Es Barraca (término recuperado en este artículo), que indican que los miembros de la hasta ahora Formación Sóller no son equivalentes laterales entre sí y representan distintas etapas en la evolución de la cuenca, estando separadas por discontinuidades de carácter regional. La primera unidad (Formación Es Barraca) representa la evolución durante el Sinemuriense de una plataforma carbonatada somera, similar a las plataformas epicontinentales desarrolladas durante el Lías inferior en el ámbito del Tethys más occidental. La segunda y la tercera (Formación Sa Moleta y Formación Es Racó; Pliensbachiense inferior) son unidades disconformes con la anterior, muestran litologías y asociaciones de facies diferenciadas y presentan una distribución y espesores irregulares a favor de surcos intraplataforma. New stratigraphic and bioestratigraphic data from recent studies of the Sinemurian-lower Pliensbachian succession (Soller Formation) of the Mallorca Island demand the modification of the current lithostratigraphic scheme of the Lower Jurassic of Mallorca. The new lithostratigraphic scheme proposed in this work eliminates the Soller Formation and turns into the Formation category its three previous Es Barraca, Sa Moleta and Es Raco members. This new hierarchy for the lithostratigraphic units is based on new stratigraphic, sedimentological and biostratigraphic data obtained from the detailed study of the Es Barraca Formation (new range unit recovered in this work) which indicate that these three new proposed lithostratigraphic formations are not laterally correlatable, they represent different stages in the evolution of the sedimentary basin and are separated by regional unconformities. The first unit (Es Barraca Formation) represents the sedimentary evolution, during the Sinemurian, of a peritidal-shallow subtidal carbonate platform, similar to other epicontinental platforms developed during the Lower Jurassic around the continental margins of the western Tethys. The two others units (Sa Moleta Formation and Es Raco Formation; lower Pliensbachian) are unconformable over the former, showing different lithologies and sedimentary facies and environments, and are disposed with irregular distribution and thicknesses in relation with their deposition in intra-shelf troughs formed during initial stages of platform rifting
