De Sangue e Vinho: As Bacchae de Soyinka como exemplo de teatro sincrético, circular e multidimensional
This paper is a summary of Wole Soyinka’s Bacchae of Euripides: A Communion Rite, a Nigerian dramatic rewriting from Euripides’Bacchae. This analysis which identifies the similarities and the inconsistencies between the ancient Greek myths and gods and the Yoruba cosmogony and rituals, will focus on the idea of drama as an ideal medium for social and political expression within a postcolonial space. The following aspects of Soyinka’s Bacchae will be taken under consideration: the relationship between the classical prototype and its Yoruba version (the re-contextualization of time, space and characters; the similarities and the inconsistencies between the ancient Greek myths and gods and the Yoruba cosmogony and folklore); the cultural and metaphysical syncretism; third and last, the metamorphosis of the myth’s identity, that is, the deconstruction of traditional western canons and themes replaced by precolonial rituals. The result is a syncretic theatreEste artigo é em um sumário da obra Bacchae of Euripides: A Communion Rite [Bacantes de Eurípedes: Um Rito de Comunhão], de Wole Soyinka, uma reescritura dramática nigeriana de As Bacantes, de Eurípides. Improved catalytic activity of EDTA–modified BiFeO3 powders for remarkable degradation of procion red by heterogeneous photo–Fenton process
For the first time, heterogeneous photo–Fenton degradation of Procion Red dye under visible irradiation was investigated using ferrite bismuth (BiFeO3) catalysts synthesized by hydrothermal method with and without EDTA. The results and analysis revealed that the presence of EDTA affected the crystallinity degree and morphology of BiFeO3 particles, but almost not changed their specific surface area and band–gap energy values. The BiFeO3 catalyst prepared with EDTA exhibited superior catalytic activity, reaching 99% of degradation in 120 min, when compared to the BiFeO3 prepared without EDTA, which obtained 70% degradation under the same conditions. This result may be associated with the synergistic enhancement effects between the morphology and the degree of crystallinity of the particles. In addition, the EDTA–modified catalyst showed high reusability and stability even after five cycles. Radical scavenger experiments were developed to determine that •OH and •O2− were the main active species involved on the dye degradation. A possible simplified mechanism for the photo–Fenton reaction was also proposed coupled with the identification of reaction intermediates
Patterns of breast cancer mortality trends in Europe
Objectives: To identify patterns of variation in breast cancer mortality in Europe (1980–2010), using a model-based approach.
Methods: Mortality data were obtained from the World Health Organization database and mixed models were used to describe the time trends in the age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR). Model-based clustering was used to identify clusters of countries with homogeneous variation in ASMR.
Results: Three patterns were identified. Patterns 1 and 2 are characterized by stable or slightly increasing trends in ASMR in the first half of the period analysed, and a clear decline is observed thereafter; in pattern 1 the median of the ASMR is higher, and the highest rates were achieved sooner. Pattern 3 is characterised by a rapid increase in mortality until 1999, declining slowly thereafter.
Conclusion: This study provides a general model for the description and interpretation of the variation in breast cancer mortality in Europe, based in three main patterns
Isolated pulmonary cryptococcosis in an immunocompetent boy
Pulmonary cryptococcosis is rare in immunocompetent subjects. Here, we present the case of a 16-year-old boy who was referred to our pediatric department for the management of multiple consolidations detected on chest radiography, which was routinely performed when the patient was being evaluated for an ankle fracture. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed, and the definitive diagnosis was established as cryptococcal pneumonia. After 8 weeks of antifungal treatment, the pulmonary nodules on the chest radiographs disappeared
Participants included 13 patients and 23 relatives. Data collection was performed from July to October 2008, utilizing semi-structured interviews. All interviews were recorded. Data analysis was performed using the Collective Subject Discourse. The collected information yielded two discourses: the family recognized the welcoming strategies and the patients found the ICU team to be considerate. By including the family as a client of nursing care, relatives felt safe and confident. Results show that by committing to the responsibility of making changes in heath care practices, nurses experience a novel outlook towards ICU care, focused on human beings and associating the welcoming to the health care model that promotes the objectivity of care
Contribution to Andean flora from Oyón District , Lima, Peru
In this paper, the inventory of vascular plants of high mountains (altitudes of 4000-4810 m) from northeast Oyon district, Lima, Peru is presented. Specimens were collected during March to May 2014 and 2015 and September to November 2015. 47 families, 112 genera and 181 species are reported, of which 94 were the first record for Lima region. For each species are given collector names, collect number and elevation. New local botanical inventories are needed for better evaluating the diversity, species distribution patterns and endemism in the high Andean vegetation
Anaplasma phagocytophilum MSP4 and HSP70 proteins are involved in interactions with host cells during pathogen infection
Anaplasma phagocytophilum transmembrane and surface proteins play a role during infection and multiplication in host neutrophils and tick vector cells. Recently, A. phagocytophilum Major surface protein 4 (MSP4) and Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) were shown to be localized on the bacterial membrane, with a possible role during pathogen infection in ticks. In this study, we hypothesized that A. phagocytophilum MSP4 and HSP70 have similar functions in tick-pathogen and host-pathogen interactions. To address this hypothesis, herein we characterized the role of these bacterial proteins in interaction and infection of vertebrate host cells. The results showed that A. phagocytophilum MSP4 and HSP70 are involved in host-pathogen interactions, with a role for HSP70 during pathogen infection. The analysis of the potential protective capacity of MSP4 and MSP4-HSP70 antigens in immunized sheep showed that MSP4-HSP70 was only partially protective against pathogen infection. This limited protection may be associated with several factors, including the recognition of non-protective epitopes by IgG in immunized lambs. Nevertheless, these antigens may be combined with other candidate protective antigens for the development of vaccines for the control of human and animal granulocytic anaplasmosis. Focusing on the characterization of host protective immune mechanisms and protein-protein interactions at the host-pathogen interface may lead to the discovery and design of new effective protective antigens.Peer reviewedVeterinary Pathobiolog
Prostaglandin F 2α-induced prostate transmembrane protein, androgen induced 1 mediates ovarian cancer progression increasing epithelial plasticity
The role of prostaglandin (PG) F2a has been scarcely studied in cancer. We have identified a new function for PGF2a in ovarian
cancer, stimulating the production of Prostate Transmembrane Protein, Androgen Induced 1 (PMEPA1). We show that this induction
increases cell plasticity and proliferation, enhancing tumor growth through PMEPA1. Thus, PMEPA1 overexpression in ovarian
carcinoma cells, significantly increased cell proliferation rates, whereas PMEPA1 silencing decreased proliferation. In addition,
PMEPA1 overexpression buffered TGF signaling, via reduction of SMADdependent signaling. PMEPA1 overexpressing cells
acquired an epithelial morphology, associated with higher Ecadherin expression levels while catenin nuclear translocation was inhibited.
Notwithstanding, high PMEPA1 levels also correlated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition markers, such as vimentin and
ZEB1, allowing the cells to take advantage of both epithelial and mesenchymal characteristics, gaining in cell plasticity and adaptability.
Interestingly, in mouse xenografts, PMEPA1 overexpressing ovarian cells had a clear survival and proliferative advantage,
resulting in higher metastatic capacity, while PMEPA1 silencing had the opposite effect. Furthermore, high PMEPA1 expression
in a cohort of advanced ovarian cancer patients was observed, correlating with Ecadherin expression. Most importantly, high
PMEPA1 mRNA levels were associated with lower patient survivalThis work was supported by grants from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación
