Experimental demonstration of stimulated polarization wave in a chain of nuclear spins
A stimulated wave of polarization, which implements a simple mechanism of
quantum amplification, is experimentally demonstrated in a chain of four
J-coupled nuclear spins, irradiated by a weak radio-frequency transverse field.
The "quantum domino" dynamics, a wave of flipped spins triggered by a flip of
the first spin, has been observed in fully C-labeled sodium butyrate.Comment: 8 pages including 3 figure
A Review of Regional Economic Models for Fisheries Management in the U.S.
In 1986, Andrews and Rossi reviewed input-output (IO)studies of U.S. fisheries. Since then, many more fisheries studies have appeared using IO and other types of regional economic models, such as Fishery Economic Assessment Models, Social Accounting Matrices, and Computable General Equilibrium models. However, to our knowledge no updated summary of these studies or models has appeared since 1986. This paper attempts to fill this gap by briefly reviewing the types of regional economic models that have been applied to fisheries, reviewing studies using these models that have been conducted for U.S. fisheries, and identifying data and modeling issues associated with regional economic analysis of fisheries in the U.S. The authors conclude that although economic impact analysis of fisheries policy is required under federal law, development of more representative regional economic models for this purpose is not likely to be forthcoming without increased information obtained through some type of comprehensive data collection program.Review, regional economic models, fisheries, IO, FEAM, SAM, CGE, IMPLAN, data., Community/Rural/Urban Development, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy, R1, R13, R15,
Projective measurement in nuclear magnetic resonance
It is demonstrated that nuclear magnetic resonance experiments using
pseudopure spin states can give possible outcomes of projective quantum
measurement and probabilities of such outcomes. The physical system is a
cluster of six dipolar-coupled nuclear spins of benzene in a liquid-crystalline
matrix. For this system with the maximum total spin S=3, the results of
measuring are presented for the cases when the state of the system is one
of the eigenstates of .Comment: 9 pages incluing 3 figure
Accurate measurement of ^{13}C - ^{15}N distances with solid-state NMR
Solid-state NMR technique for measureing distances between hetero-nuclei in
static powder samples is described. It is based on a two-dimensional
single-echo scheme enhanced with adiabatic cross-polarization. As an example,
the results for intra-molecular distances in -crystalline form of
glycine are presented. The measured NMR distances ^13 C(2) - ^15 N and ^13 C(1)
- ^15 N are 1.496 0.002 \AA and 2.50 0.02 \AA, respectively.Comment: 12 page
Negative Externalities on Property Values Resulting from Water Impairment: The Case of the Pigeon River Watershed
The following hypothesis was tested: Willingness to bear a negative water impairment externality differs between those who do and those who do not receive economic benefit from the impairment source, e.g., a paper mill. The hypothesis was tested using a hedonic analysis of ambient water quality in two discrete housing markets in the Pigeon River Watershed, which have been polluted by the operation of a paper mill. The results suggest that North Carolina residents of the subwatersheds with impaired river, who experience economic benefits from the paper mill in addition to harmful effects, do perceive the pollution as a negative externality, whereas they may have a willingness to bear a similar type of negative externality associated with impaired streams. In contrast, the effects of both degraded river and streams on property values is perceived as a negative externality by residents in the Tennessee side, who experience only harmful effects from the pollution. North Carolina residents may hold greater willingness to bear the harmful effects of pollution as a given condition in their decision-making process because they receive economic benefits from the paper mill, while this internalization of the negative externality is weaker for residents in the Tennessee side.negative Externalities, water quality, spatial hedonic model, Environmental Economics and Policy,
Measuring the Effects of a Land Value Tax on Land Development
The objective of this research is to evaluate a land value tax as a potential policy tool to moderate sprawling development in Nashville, TN, the nation’s most sprawling metropolitan community with a population of one million or more. To achieve this objective, the hypothesis is empirically tested that a land value tax encourages more development closer to preexisting development than farther from preexisting development. Specifically, the marginal effects of a land value tax on the probability of land development is hypothesized to be greater in areas around preexisting development than in areas more distant from preexisting development. The findings show that the marginal effects of a land value tax on the probability of developing parcels that neighbored previously developed parcels was greater than the probability of developing parcels that did not neighbor previously developed parcels. This finding suggests that land value taxation could be used to design compact development strategies that address sprawling development.Land value tax, Land development model, Urban sprawl, Land Economics/Use, Community/Rural/Urban Development,

Twelve-spin "Schrodinger cat"
Pseudopure "cat" state, a superposition of quantum states with all spins up
and all spins down, is experimentally demonstrated for a system of twelve
dipolar-coupled nuclear spins of fully 13C-labeled benzene molecule oriented in
a liquid-crystalline matrix.Comment: Submitted to Applied Physics Letter
lordif: An R Package for Detecting Differential Item Functioning Using Iterative Hybrid Ordinal Logistic Regression/Item Response Theory and Monte Carlo Simulations
Logistic regression provides a flexible framework for detecting various types of differential item functioning (DIF). Previous efforts extended the framework by using item response theory (IRT) based trait scores, and by employing an iterative process using group--specific item parameters to account for DIF in the trait scores, analogous to purification approaches used in other DIF detection frameworks. The current investigation advances the technique by developing a computational platform integrating both statistical and IRT procedures into a single program. Furthermore, a Monte Carlo simulation approach was incorporated to derive empirical criteria for various DIF statistics and effect size measures. For purposes of illustration, the procedure was applied to data from a questionnaire of anxiety symptoms for detecting DIF associated with age from the Patient--Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System.
