    Nowadays the number of non-native English speakers exceeds the number of native English ones, so English is used to communicate among the non-native English speakers. As a consequence, English teachers should consider the phenomena of world Englishes. In this research the main problems is what corrections the native English speaker examining the bilingual essays written by students are. The native speaker is the English lecturer of ESL composition at the Ohio State University, and the subjects are the students of English Education Department at Purworejo Muhammadiyah University in the academic year of 2012/2013. The data is in the form of a number of bilingual essays written by students in accomplishing the task of Indonesian-English translation class. The analysis and interpretation employed is mainly the mixed method emphasizing on descriptiv equalitative research method. After examining, the native English teacher states that he is able to comprehend most of the essays. However, he finds that there are quite many sentences which are considered idiomatically unnatural for native speaker’s point of view. Such weaknesses occur especially due to the use of inappropriate words and idiomatic expressions

    Suprasegmental Errors of Students with Javanese Mother Tongue: A Case at a Private Islamic University in Purworejo

    This study was aimed to examine errors found in suprasegmentals, more specifically in word stress and intonation; and to explain the causes of errors made by the learners. The research samples were twenty of the first semester students who spoke Javanese as their mother tongue and who took Pronunciation subject. The instruments of the study were pronunciation test and focus group interview. The pronunciation test was used to get the data of suprasegmental errors, specifically in word stress and intonation. Meanwhile, the interview was used to get the data of the causes of errors. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics analysis and thematic analysis. The findings showed that there were 35.8 % errors in word stress and 40 % errors in intonation. Then, the source of errors occurred because of mother-tongue influence, target language or intralingua, learning strategy and learners' attitude. Other factors contributed to the errors were lack of practice and lack of exposure to the native speakers both in the classroom and outside the classroom &nbsp

    ONLINE LEARNING PERCEPTION DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC VIEWED FROM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

    The purpose of this study was to investigate SMA and SMK students' perceptions of online learning. Secondly, to examine whether the two schools differ greatly and to describe their perception of online learning based on their perceptions. There were 133 participants, comprising 61 SMA students and 72 SMK students. The data was collected using Likert scale questionnaires and an interview. To analyze the data, the authors carried out descriptive and inferential analyzes of the quantitative data, while a qualitative thematic analysis was used. The finding of the study shows that there was a significant difference in the perception of online learning between SMA and SMK students. The high perception was obtained from SMA students, while medium perception was showed by SMK students. Based on the thematic analysis, it showed that SMK students encountered more difficulties in attending online learning classes compared with SMA students

    The Analysis of Correlative Conjunctions Used in Undergraduate Students’ Research Articles

    This research belongs to qualitative research. The aims of this research are to identify the types of correlative conjunction and to explain their functions in students’ research articles. The data source of this research is students’ research articles written by undergraduate students of English Language Education Program at Purworejo Muhammadiyah University in the academic year of 2018/2019. In collecting the data, the researcher checked all the research articles published from August 2019 until December 2019. In analyzing the data, the researcher organized the data from the first correlative conjunction until the last correlative conjunction found in research articles; gave code for each of the correlative conjunctions; classified the correlative conjunctions based on the types: both__and, not only__but also, either__or, and neither__nor; classified the correlative conjunctions based on their functions in joining sentence elements such as words, phrases, and clauses; counted the data; discussed the finding; and drew conclusion and suggestion based on the data in this research. The result of this research shows that there are 91 correlative conjunctions found in 46 research articles: 39 both__and (42.86%), 40 not only__but also (43.96%), 8 either__or (8.79%), and 4 neither__nor (4.39%). There are 25 conjunctions connecting words (27.47%), 65 conjunctions connecting phrases (71.43%), and 1 conjunction connecting clauses (1.10%)

    Lexico-Grammatical Analysis of Alice's Adventure in Wonderland and Its Pedagogical Implication

    This study aims to reveal: (1) the translation differences between source language (SL) and target language (TL) of the human translator and the machine translator on the translation of the Indonesian subtitle of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Movie, (2) lexical difference in translation differences between source language (SL) and target language (TL), (3) grammatical difference in translation differences between source language (SL) and target language (TL) and (4) the advantages in examining the translation differences related to vocabulary and grammar teaching for the tenth grade students of senior high school. This study used a qualitative descriptive. The data were taken subtitles sentences because what the researchers analyzes is the form of written language. The source of the data was script by Linda Woolverton (SL), the Indonesian subtitle was translated by Pein Akatsuki (TL 1) and the second Indonesian translator was Google translate (TL 2). This study used the researchers as the main instrument for collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The researchers read the script of English and Indonesian subtitle of the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Movie. The results of the descriptive analysis show that there are 147 data of the translation. It reveals that: (1) the translation of this research are 114 data (78%) difference and 33 data (22%) no translation difference of Indonesian Subtitle of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Movie, (2) in the translation differences (351 items) there are lexical differences (169 items), (3) whereas, the difference of translations are grammatical differences (182 items), (4) there are several advantages in improving students’ vocabulary skills, teaching grammar, and finding the vocabulary and grammar in a course book Bahasa Inggris

    Workshop Public Speaking Bagi Anak Usia Dini di Desa Susuk Kecamatan Ngombol Kabupaten Purworejo

    Tujuan dari kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini adalah untuk membantu   anak usia dini untuk mengembangkan potensi public speaking. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut metode pelatihan adalah dengan melalui workshop.  Sasaran Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini adalah  anak usia dini di Desa Susuk Kecamatan Ngombol Kabupaten Purworejo dengan jumlah populasi adalah 60 orang. Permasalahan diselesaikan dalam tiga (3) tahapan kegiatan, yakni persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Pada tahap persiapan yang dilakukan adalah menganalisa masalah dan kebutuhan anak usia dini untuk melatih public speaking. Tahap kedua yaitu pelaksanaan terbagi menjadi beberapa sesi yaitu pembukaan, penyampaian teori dasar public speaking  Tahap ketiga yakni evaluasi dengan meminta umpan balik peserta melalui kuesioner tentang pemahaman materi.  Hasil dari pelaksanaan kegiatan ini dapat diuraikan sebagai berikut: Berdasarkan hasil umpan balik dari peserta, didapatkan informasi bahwa kegiatan ini sangat relevan dengan anak menghadapi permasalan public speaking bagi anak usia dini, para peserta merasa mendapatkan wawasan yang lebih luas tentang public speaking. Disamping Peserta merasa mendapatkan peningkatan dalam hal ketrampilan public speaking untuk anak usia dini, baik secara teori maupun praktik

    Di era abad 21 ini, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris semakin berkembang. Sekarang peran guru bukan satu- satunya namun ada guru sangat diperlukan untuk memanfaatkan sumber-sumber pembelajaran lain yang dapat memberikan pengalaman belajar kepada siswa. Dengan memaksimalkan peran guru dalam mengkombinasikan sumber-sumber belajar khususnya materi internet diharapkan siswa dapat menguasai 21st century skills yang meliputi critical thinking, collaboration, communication dan creative problem solving. Berangkat dari tujuan untuk meningkatkan skil siswa MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMK Kabupaten Wonosobo bekerja sama dengan tim pengabdian Purworejo mengadakan Workshop Metode Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Untuk SMK di Wonosobo. Kegiatan yang melibatkan 45 peserta yang meliputi guru bahasa Inggris dari SMK Negeri dan Swasta. Hasil dari kegiatan ini peserta workshop mendapatkan teknik-teknik dan metode dalam pengelolaan kelas yang meliputi penggunaan metode problem-based learning (PBL), Task-based learning, Inquiry-base learning dan Blended learning, dan sharing based practice pembeljaran speaking dengan game

    English Learning Assistance in the Era Pandemic COVID-19 for Students in Mendiro

    This paper aims to provide information about English learning assistance in the era pandemic Covid-19 for students in Mendiro through the community service. This activity was done to respond the community’s need to minimize the problems of learning English  which were appeared during Covid-19 pandemic. The participants of the activity were 25 students which consisted of primary schools, Junior High School and Senior High School. The main problem of the students were difficulties in understanding English lessons as they were lack of interaction with their teachers since they were study from home (BDR). They have limited strategies to do self study at home. To overcome the problems, a team of lecturers of English Language Education conducted a community service in Mendiro village, Ngombol subdistric of Purworejo. Through sharing of knowledge and strategies to learn English skills through internet media, the participants could get knowledge and took opportunity to practice their English. By adopting the strategies given by team of lecturers, the participants are expected to be able to learn English easier with more enjoyable and enjoy simple literary works such as short films, short stories, short stories videos and songs. Finally, they can obtain better English skills in the futur

    Tujuan dari kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini adalah untuk membantu  remaja karang taruna untuk mengembangkan skill dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut metode pengembagan skill adalah dengan melalui workshop.  Sasaran Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini adalah para remaja karang taruna di desa Polowangi kecamatan Pituruh kabupaten Purworejo dengan jumlah populasi adalah 40 orang. Permasalahan diselesaikan dalam tiga (3) tahapan kegiatan, yakni persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Pada tahap persiapan yang dilakukan adalah menganalisa masalah dan kebutuhan remaja karang taruna untuk  menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Tahap kedua yaitu pelaksanaan terbagi menjadi beberapa sesi yaitu pembukaan, penyampaian strategi belajar bahasa Inggris secara interaktif. Tahap ketiga yakni evaluasi dengan meminta umpan balik peserta melalui kuesioner tentang pemahaman materi.
