Purpose The ultimate goal of current open access (OA) initiatives is for library services to use OA resources. This study aimed to assess the infrastructure for OA scholarly information services by tabulating the number and proportion of OA articles in a literature database. Methods We measured the absolute numbers and proportions of OA articles at different time points across various disciplines based on the Web of Science (WoS) database. Results The number (proportion) of available OA articles between 2000 and 2021 in the WoS database was 12 million (32.4%). The number (proportion) of indexed OA articles in 1 year was 0.15 million (14.6%) in 2000 and 1.5 million (48.0%) in 2021. The proportion of OA by subject categories in the cumulative data was the highest in the multidisciplinary category (2000–2021, 79%; 2021, 89%), high in natural sciences (2000–2021, 21%–46%; 2021, 41%–62%) and health and medicine (2000–2021, 37%–40%; 2021, 52%–60%), and low in social sciences and others (2000–2021, 23%–32%; 2021, 36%–44%), engineering (2000–2021, 17%–33%; 2021, 31%–39%) and humanities and arts (2000–2021, 11%–22%; 2021, 28%–38%). Conclusion Our study confirmed that increasingly many OA research papers have been published in the last 20 years, and the recent data show considerable promise for better services in the future. The proportions of OA articles differed among scholarly disciplines, and designing library services necessitates several considerations with regard to the customers’ demands, available OA resources, and strategic approaches to encourage the use of scholarly OA articles

Nine days old male was admitted to the intensive care unit because of the jaundice and suspicious cardiac disease. He was delivered at 39 +5 weeks of gestation without peripartum events. His birth weight was 3.4 kg. He was the second baby with healthy brother. The family history was not contributory. He was initially transferred to the other hospital because of the jaundice at 2 days of age. Cardiac murmur was detected at that hospital. He was asymptomatic besides mild dyspnea. He was able to suck the milk of 70 ml per feeding. He was referred to another hospital because the echocardiographic examination showed a small left ventricular size

Moisture-driven shift in the climate sensitivity of white spruce xylem anatomical traits is coupled to large-scale oscillation patterns across northern treeline in northwest North America

Tree growth at northern treelines is generally temperature-limited due to cold and short growing seasons. However, temperature-induced drought stress was repeatedly reported for certain regions of the boreal forest in northwestern North America, provoked by a significant increase in temperature and possibly reinforced by a regime shift of the pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). The aim of this study is to better understand physiological growth reactions of white spruce, a dominant species of the North American boreal forest, to PDO regime shifts using quantitative wood anatomy and traditional tree-ring width (TRW) analysis. We investigated white spruce growth at latitudinal treeline across a >1,000\ua0km gradient in northwestern North America. Functionally important xylem anatomical traits (lumen area, cell-wall thickness, cell number) and TRW were correlated with the drought-sensitive standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index of the growing season. Correlations were computed separately for complete phases of the PDO in the 20th century, representing alternating warm/dry (1925-1946), cool/wet (1947-1976) and again warm/dry (1977-1998) climate regimes. Xylem anatomical traits revealed water-limiting conditions in both warm/dry PDO regimes, while no or spatially contrasting associations were found for the cool/wet regime, indicating a moisture-driven shift in growth-limiting factors between PDO periods. TRW reflected only the last shift of 1976/1977, suggesting different climate thresholds and a higher sensitivity to moisture availability of xylem anatomical traits compared to TRW. This high sensitivity of xylem anatomical traits permits to identify first signs of moisture-driven growth in treeline white spruce at an early stage, suggesting quantitative wood anatomy being a powerful tool to study climate change effects in the northwestern North American treeline ecotone. Projected temperature increase might challenge growth performance of white spruce as a key component of the North American boreal forest biome in the future, when drier conditions are likely to occur with higher frequency and intensity

Purpose: To identify risk factors for developing symptomatic brain metastases and evaluate the impact of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) on brain metastasis-free survival (BMFS) and overall survival (OS) in extensive disease small cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC). Materials and methods: Among 190 patients diagnosed with ED-SCLC who underwent FDG PET/CT and brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) prior to treatment, 53 (27.9%) received PCI while 137 (72.1%) did not. Prognostic index predicting a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases was calculated for the group without receiving PCI (observation group, n = 137) with Cox regression model. Results: Median follow-up time was 10.6 months. Multivariate Cox regression showed that the following three factors were associated with a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases: the presence of extrathoracic metastases (p = 0.004), hypermetabolism of bone marrow or spleen on FDG PET (p < 0.001), and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (p = 0.018). PCI significantly improved BMFS in high-risk patients (1-year rate: 94.7% vs. 62.1%, p = 0.001), but not in low-risk patients (1-year rate: 100.0% vs. 87.7%, p = 0.943). However, PCI did not improve OS in patients at high risk for symptomatic brain metastases (1-year rate: 65.2% vs. 50.0%, p = 0.123). Conclusion: Three prognostic factors (the presence of extrathoracic metastases, hypermetabolism of bone marrow or spleen on FDG PET, and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) were associated with a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases in ED-SCLC. PCI was beneficial for patients at a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases in terms of BMFS, but not OS. Thus, selective use of PCI in ED-SCLC according to the risk stratification is recommended. Failure of fusion between the superior and inferior cushions has usually been assumed to be the main morphogenetic event in producing hearts with deficient atrioventricular septation (atrioventricular septal, or endocardial cushion defects). Morphological studies on human autopsy specimens, however, showed that another consistent finding is the marked disproportion between the dimensions of the inlet and outlet of the left ventricle, which, until now, has no known developmental basis. We have studied the early formation of the hearts with atrioventricular septal defects, using a mouse model with trisomy 16. Animals were studied between the 10th and 19th days of gestation by stereomicroscopic examination, scanning electronmlcroscopy and the in-vitro incorporation of thymidine. The first detectable morphological abnormality of the heart in the trisomic mouse was observed on the 11th day, being a persistence of an infolding at the inferior atrioventricular junction. This infolding was present in both trisomic and eusomic animals on the 10th day. This morphology could be explained by a differential growth of the myocardium at the inferior atrioventricular junction, which was found to be a distinct zone with low incorporation of thymidine. On the 11th day, the inferior atrioventricular cushion was bigger in the trisomic hearts. The abnormalities of the cushions observed on the 12th day or later were deemed to be consequences of these primary defects. Sectioning of the heart from the left lateral aspect convincingly showed morphological changes of the superior and inferior cushion or bridging leaflets in this animal model. Abnormal endocardial cushions and abnormality in the proliferation index of the myocardium at the inferior atrioventricular junction play more significant roles in the formation of the hearts with deficient atrioventricular septation, than the abnormalities found in the atrioventricular cushions

YAF2 promotes TP53-mediated genotoxic stress response via stabilization of PDCD5

AbstractProgrammed cell death 5 (PDCD5) plays a crucial role in TP53-mediated apoptosis, but the regulatory mechanism of PDCD5 itself during apoptosis remains obscure. We identified YY1-associated factor 2 (YAF2) as a novel PDCD5-interacting protein in a yeast two-hybrid screen for PDCD5-interacting proteins. We found that YY1-associated factor 2 (YAF2) binds to and increases PDCD5 stability by inhibiting the ubiquitin-dependent proteosomal degradation pathway. However, knocking-down of YAF2 diminishes the levels of PDCD5 protein but not the levels of PDCD5 mRNA. Upon genotoxic stress response, YAF2 promotes TP53 activation via association with PDCD5. Strikingly, YAF2 failed to promote TP53 activation in the deletion of PDCD5, whereas restoration of wild-type PDCD5WT efficiently reversed the ineffectiveness of YAF2 on TP53 activation. Conversely, PDCD5 efficiently overcame the knockdown effect of YAF2 on ET-induced TP53 activation. Finally, impaired apoptosis upon PDCD5 ablation was substantially rescued by restoration of PDCD5WT but not YAF2-interacting defective PDCD5E4D nor TP53-interacting defective PDCD5E16D mutant. Our findings uncovered an apoptotic signaling cascade linking YAF2, PDCD5, and TP53 during genotoxic stress responses

Prenatal Diagnosis of Bilateral Pulmonary Agenesis: a Case Report

We report a case of bilateral pulmonary agenesis (BPA), which was suspected during a prenatal US examination and diagnosed by fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). BPA is an extremely rare congenital anomaly and, although many fetal structural defects can be detected with a high degree of confidence after introducing high-resolution US, the prenatal diagnosis of BPA remains problematic. Other thoracic abnormalities, such as a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, and pulmonary sequestration, should be excluded from the list of possible diagnoses before coming to the conclusion of BPA, because BPA is absolutely incompatible with extrauterine life, and an accurate internal diagnosis can prevent a futile intervention from being performed.Lee EY, 2008, RADIOLOGY, V247, P632, DOI 10.1148/radiol.2473062124Moreno-Alvarez O, 2008, ULTRASOUND OBST GYN, V31, P164, DOI 10.1002/uog.5201Obenauer S, 2008, CLIN IMAG, V32, P48, DOI 10.1016/j.clinimag.2007.08.019Joshi S, 2007, EARLY HUM DEV, V83, P789, DOI 10.1016/j.earlhumdev.2007.09.007Jeanty C, 2007, ULTRASOUND OBST GYN, V29, P378, DOI 10.1002/uog.3958Nazir Z, 2006, J PEDIATR SURG, V41, P1165, DOI 10.1016/j.jpedsurg.2006.02.012Gabarre JA, 2005, J ULTRAS MED, V24, P865Levine D, 2003, RADIOLOGY, V228, P379, DOI 10.1148/radiol.2282020604Vettraino IM, 2003, J ULTRAS MED, V22, P723Yang JI, 2003, J CLIN ULTRASOUND, V31, P214, DOI 10.1002/jcu.10157Laudy JAM, 2000, ULTRASOUND OBST GYN, V16, P284Kalache KD, 1997, FETAL DIAGN THER, V12, P360ENGELLENNER W, 1989, PEDIATR PATHOL, V9, P725

The role of phosphodiesterase 3 in endotoxin-induced acute kidney injury

Background: Acute kidney injury frequently accompanies sepsis. Endotoxin is known to reduce tissue levels of cAMP and low levels of cAMP have been associated with renal injury. We, therefore, hypothesized that endotoxin induced renal injury by activating phosphodiesterase 3 (PDE3) which metabolizes cAMP and that amrinone an inhibitor of PDE3 would prevent the renal injury. Methods: Animals were divided into three groups (n = 7/group): 1) Control (0.9% NaCl infusion without LPS); 2) LPS (0.9% NaCl infusion with LPS); 3) Amrinone+LPS (Amrinone infusion with LPS). Either lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or vehicle was injected via the jugular vein and the rats followed for 3 hours. We explored the expression of PDE3 isoenzymes and the concentrations of cAMP in the tissue. Results: The PDE3B gene but not PDE3A was upregulated in the kidney of LPS group. Immunohistochemistry also showed that PDE3B was expressed in the distal tubule in the controls and LPS caused PDE3B expression in the proximal as well. However, PDE3A was not expressed in the kidney either in the control or LPS treated groups. Tissue level of cAMP was decreased after LPS and was associated with an increase in blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, ultrastructural proximal tubular changes, and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the endotoxemic kidney. In septic animals the phosphodiesterase 3 inhibitor, amrinone, preserved the tissue cAMP level, renal structural changes, and attenuated the increased blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and iNOS expression in the kidney. Conclusion: These findings suggest a significant role for PDE3B as an important mediator of LPS-induced acute kidney injury

Summer climate information recorded in tree-ring oxygen isotope chronologies from seven locations in the Republic of Korea

The Republic of Korea is characterized by its north-to-south stretch and high mountain ranges along the eastern coast, resulting in terrain with higher elevation in the east and lower in the west. These geographical features typically lead to regional climate differences, either based on latitude or from east to west. In the present study, for effectiveness, the entire Korean peninsula was divided into four regions based on the geographical features: The Northeast Coast (NEC), Central Inland (MI), Southeast Coast (SEC), and South Coast (SC). Two test sites were chosen from each region, except for the SC. The linear relationship between the altitude of sites and the mean oxygen isotope ratio (δ18O) revealed a negative correlation; the highest (1,447 m a.s.l.) and the lowest altitude (86 m a.s.l.) sites had a mean δ18O of 27.03‰ and 29.67‰, respectively. The sites selected from the same region exhibited stronger correlation coefficients (0.75–0.79) and Glk (Gleichläufigkeit) (74–83%) between the tree-ring oxygen isotope chronologies (δ18OTR chronologies) than those from different regions (0.60–0.69/70–79%). However, subtle variations in pattern were observed in the comparison period during a few selected intervals (approximately 10 years). All the regional δ18OTR chronologies exhibited positive correlations with either June or July temperatures over Korea, whereas negative correlations with regional summer precipitation and SPEI-3. Moreover, the chronologies showed notable negative correlations with the water condition of western Japan. The findings of this study can be used as a scientific reference for the study of variations of rainfall in East Asia using δ18OTR chronology
