Prediction of Individual Propofol Requirements based on Preoperative EEG Signals
The patient must be given an adequate amount of propofol for safe surgery
since overcapacity and low capacity cause accidents. However, the sensitivity
of propofol varies from patient to patient, making it very difficult to
determine the propofol requirements for anesthesia. This paper aims to propose
a neurophysiological predictor of propofol requirements based on the
preoperative electroencephalogram (EEG). We exploited the canonical correlation
analysis that infers the amount of information on the propofol requirements.
The results showed that the preoperative EEG included the factor that could
explain the propofol requirements. Specifically, the frontal and posterior
regions had crucial information on the propofol requirements. Moreover, there
was a significantly different power in the frontal and posterior regions
between baseline and unconsciousness periods, unlike the alpha power in the
central region. These findings showed the potential that preoperative EEG could

Electronic structures of hexagonal RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films
We investigated the electronic structure of multiferroic hexagonal RMnO3 (R =
Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films using both optical spectroscopy and
first-principles calculations. Using artificially stabilized hexagonal RMnO3,
we extended the optical spectroscopic studies on the hexagonal multiferroic
manganite system. We observed two optical transitions located near 1.7 eV and
2.3 eV, in addition to the predominant absorption above 5 eV. With the help of
first-principles calculations, we attribute the low-lying optical absorption
peaks to inter-site transitions from the oxygen states hybridized strongly with
different Mn orbital symmetries to the Mn 3d3z2-r2 state. As the ionic radius
of the rare earth ion increased, the lowest peak showed a systematic increase
in its peak position. We explained this systematic change in terms of a
flattening of the MnO5 triangular bipyramid
Risk stratification of symptomatic brain metastases by clinical and FDG PET parameters for selective use of prophylactic cranial irradiation in patients with extensive disease of small cell lung cancer
Purpose: To identify risk factors for developing symptomatic brain metastases and evaluate the impact of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) on brain metastasis-free survival (BMFS) and overall survival (OS) in extensive disease small cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC). Materials and methods: Among 190 patients diagnosed with ED-SCLC who underwent FDG PET/CT and brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) prior to treatment, 53 (27.9%) received PCI while 137 (72.1%) did not. Prognostic index predicting a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases was calculated for the group without receiving PCI (observation group, n = 137) with Cox regression model. Results: Median follow-up time was 10.6 months. Multivariate Cox regression showed that the following three factors were associated with a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases: the presence of extrathoracic metastases (p = 0.004), hypermetabolism of bone marrow or spleen on FDG PET (p < 0.001), and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (p = 0.018). PCI significantly improved BMFS in high-risk patients (1-year rate: 94.7% vs. 62.1%, p = 0.001), but not in low-risk patients (1-year rate: 100.0% vs. 87.7%, p = 0.943). However, PCI did not improve OS in patients at high risk for symptomatic brain metastases (1-year rate: 65.2% vs. 50.0%, p = 0.123). Conclusion: Three prognostic factors (the presence of extrathoracic metastases, hypermetabolism of bone marrow or spleen on FDG PET, and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) were associated with a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases in ED-SCLC. PCI was beneficial for patients at a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases in terms of BMFS, but not OS. Thus, selective use of PCI in ED-SCLC according to the risk stratification is recommended. Enterobius vermicularis Eggs Discovered in Coprolites from a Medieval Korean Mummy
While the presence of pinworm eggs in archaeological samples has been reported by many researchers in the New World, those have been detected very scarcely in the Old World, especially in East Asian countries. In fact, many parasite species were recovered from the archeological remains in Korea, eggs of Enterobius vermicularis had not been found. Recently, a female mummy buried in the 17th century was discovered in the Joseon tomb from Dangjin-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. After rehydration process for 12 days, investigations were carried on the luminal surface of the colon. From them, 3 eggs of E. vermicularis were recovered. They were elliptical, transparent with a thin egg shell, 50.3±5.2 µm (length) and 28.2±3.9 µm (width) in size. This is the first discovery of E. vermicularis eggs in East Asia
Catalpol Modulates Lifespan via DAF-16/FOXO and SKN-1/Nrf2 Activation in
Catalpol is an effective component of rehmannia root and known to possess various pharmacological properties. The present study was aimed at investigating the potential effects of catalpol on the lifespan and stress tolerance using C. elegans model system. Herein, catalpol showed potent lifespan extension of wild-type nematode under normal culture condition. In addition, survival rate of catalpol-fed nematodes was significantly elevated compared to untreated control under heat and oxidative stress but not under hyperosmolality conditions. We also found that elevated antioxidant enzyme activities and expressions of stress resistance proteins were attributed to catalpol-mediated increased stress tolerance of nematode. We further investigated whether catalpol’s longevity effect is related to aging-related factors including reproduction, food intake, and growth. Interestingly, catalpol exposure could attenuate pharyngeal pumping rate, indicating that catalpol may induce dietary restriction of nematode. Moreover, locomotory ability of aged nematode was significantly improved by catalpol treatment, while lipofuscin levels were attenuated, suggesting that catalpol may affect age-associated changes of nematode. Our mechanistic studies revealed that mek-1, daf-2, age-1, daf-16, and skn-1 are involved in catalpol-mediated longevity. These results indicate that catalpol extends lifespan and increases stress tolerance of C. elegans via DAF-16/FOXO and SKN-1/Nrf activation dependent on insulin/IGF signaling and JNK signaling
Mucoid Degeneration of Both ACL and PCL
Unlike meniscal tears and chondral defects, the mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a rare cause of knee pain and there have been no case reports of mucoid degeneration of both the ACL and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). A 48-year-old-male patient presented with knee pain and limitation of motion. The patient's magnetic resonance imaging, arthroscopic findings, and pathologic diagnosis confirmed a clinical diagnosis of mucoid degeneration of both the ACL and the PCL.
