Metis Students: Learning and Engagement through Science Education
The present study investigated the extent to which students engaged in learning if factors that influenced student engagement were in place. The factors were: relevancy, potency, competency, and belonging and had been identified by the research literature to influence student engagement. The study took place in a small, isolated, Métis community in Saskatchewan and involved grade 10 students (3 female and 2 male). The teacher used inquiry methods to teach science with units designed to be well connected to the community of the participants.
The procedure of the investigation was case study using qualitative analysis. The participants were interviewed up to three times throughout the first semester of the school year. Data were gathered from the interviews and classroom observations. The interviews and observations were analyzed for the predicted factors of student engagement, as well as emerging factors. Motivation and responsibility were the two additional factors that seemed to influence the participants’ engagement with learning.
I conclude that the participants did engage in learning, at varying levels, although relevancy, potency, competency, and belonging had less influence in this study than expected. Motivation and responsibility seemed to have the greatest influence on three of the participants who were striving to meet personal goals for which further education was required. These participants were considered by societal standards to be successful in school – completing grade 12 “on-time”. The other two participants were considered not successful (by Western society’s definition of successful), yet were influenced by the factors of engagement, to some extent. Their lack of school success seemed to arise from a less than meaningful school experience that allowed out-of-school experiences to be their priorities. For all the participants, there seemed to be a disconnect between in-school learning and out-of-school life as in-school learning had little impact on the participants. This led to the idea that school was less than meaningful for them.
It is important that the education offered to students, especially those in Aboriginal communities, be specific to the culture and place of the community. These efforts may help students better connect in-school learning to out-of-school living and contribute to a more meaningful educational experience
Early enterovirus neonatal infection: when should we think about it?
peer reviewedEnterovirus (EV) may cause a broad spectrum of clinical syndromes and even cause
a sepsis-like picture. Although they are responsible for high morbidity and
mortality rates, viral testing does not appear in the algorithms for the
evaluation of neonatal infections. During the month of June 2013, we identified 3
cases of EV meningitis in our unit of neonatology. All three infants had fever
during the first week of life and their clinical examination revealed an
irritability. The EV infection was detected by Real-Time Polymerase Chain
Reaction (RT-PCR) EV on the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Two of the patients also
had a positive RT-PCR EV in the blood. The 3 newborns were discharged from the
hospital after a few days with no adverse outcome. Our clinical observations and
the literature review suggest that EV infections in neonates ought to be
identified as soon as possible by an early RT-PCR EV on the blood, and on the CSF
if a lumbar puncture is indicated. This could help reduce the administration of
antibiotics and the length of hospital stay.

Prenatal Determination of Fetal Rhd in Maternal Plasma: Two-Years Experience of Routine Clinical Use
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the predictive value of RHD fetal genotype in maternal plasma of Rh D negative mothers after 10 weeks of gestation in a clinical use. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Prospective, comparative study between fetal RHD genotyping in maternal plasma, with amplification of exons 4,5,10 of the RHD gene, by real-time multiplex PCR, and Rh D serology at birth, in 218 pregnancy and their 223 babies, between November 2002 and 2004. RESULTS: Combining the amplification of three exons, the concordance rate of fetal Rh D genotyping in maternal plasma and baby phenotyping at delivery was 100%. Four women whose the babies were Rh D negative were positive for RHD exon 10 during pregnancy. This positivity was, in three cases, correlated with the presence of RHDpsi pseudogene and in last case, with a haplotype Cdes (r's). RHD genotyping was performed for five twin pregnancies. CONCLUSION: Multiplex PCR using maternal plasma provides perfect prenatal prediction of fetal RHD gene. These results confirm that this non invasive procedure is the preferred method for assessing Rh D fetal status in Rh negative mothers. Using this method for two years in routine practice has led us to modify our management scheme for sensitized Rh D-negative pregnant women

Risankizumab-Aggravated Crusted Scabies in a Patient with Down Syndrome
peer reviewedRisankizumab, an interleukin (IL)-23 antagonist, is a highly effective treatment for moderate to severe psoriasis. Crusted scabies (CS) is a rare and severe form of scabies, occurring mainly in immunosuppressed patients and/or neurologically or mentally ill patients. A young girl with Down syndrome was diagnosed with a hyperkeratotic form of psoriasis. As treatment with topical dermocorticosteroids, UVB-phototherapy and acitretin for 6 weeks did not improve the lesions, two injections of risankizumab were administered. Following these injections, the lesions became rapidly even more severely crusted, and new lesions appeared on the extremities and the face of the patient. There was histological evidence of a high charge of scabies, leading to a diagnosis of CS. The patient was hospitalized and successfully treated by local permethrine and systemic ivermectine. This case suggests that even though anti-IL23 antagonists display an excellent overall safety profile, a particular caution for infections should still be respected in patients with underlying risk factors. © 2020, The Author(s)
