Age structure of a lizard along an elevational gradient reveals nonlinear lifespan patterns with altitude

However, in the case of ectotherms, lifespan typically increases with altitude, even though temperature—one of the main factors to determine ectotherms’ life history—declines with elevation. This pattern can be explained by the fact that a shorter activity time favors survival. In this study, we analyzed how lifespan and other life-history traits of the lizard Psammodromus algirus vary along a 2,200m elevational gradient in Sierra Nevada (SE Spain). Populations at intermediate altitudes (1,200–1,700 m), corresponding to the optimal habitat for this species, had the shortest lifespans, whereas populations inhabiting marginal habitats (at both low and at high altitudes) lived longest. Therefore, this lizard did not follow the typical pattern of ectotherms, as it also lived longer at the lower limit of its distribution, nor did it show a longer lifespan in areas with optimal habitats. These results might be explained by a complex combination of different gradients along the mountain, namely that activity time decreases with altitude whereas food availability increases. This could explain why lifespan was maximum at both high (limited activity time) and low (limited food availability) altitudes, resulting in similar lifespans in areas with contrasting environmental conditions. Unusual diffuse X-ray source in the Galactic center region
We report the ASCA and Chandra discovery of a diffuse X-ray source in the
Galactic center region. The X-ray spectrum is fitted with a non-equilibrium
ionization (NEI) plasma model of about 6-keV temperature. The model requires
higher than solar metal abundances, a young plasma age of 100 years
and a large N_H value of about 10^{23} cm^{-2}. The N_H value constrains the
source position to be in the Galactic center region at about 8.5 kpc distance.
The high resolution X-ray image with the Chandra ACIS shows a ring of 10''
radius which corresponds to 0.4 pc at the Galactic center, and a tail-like
structure. Although the morphology is peculiar, the other X-ray features are
likely to be a very young supernova remnant, possibly in a free expansion

Tissue Determinants of Human NK Cell Development, Function, and Residence.
Immune responses in diverse tissue sites are critical for protective immunity and homeostasis. Here, we investigate how tissue localization regulates the development and function of human natural killer (NK) cells, innate lymphocytes important for anti-viral and tumor immunity. Integrating high-dimensional analysis of NK cells from blood, lymphoid organs, and mucosal tissue sites from 60 individuals, we identify tissue-specific patterns of NK cell subset distribution, maturation, and function maintained across age and between individuals. Mature and terminally differentiated NK cells with enhanced effector function predominate in blood, bone marrow, spleen, and lungs and exhibit shared transcriptional programs across sites. By contrast, precursor and immature NK cells with reduced effector capacity populate lymph nodes and intestines and exhibit tissue-resident signatures and site-specific adaptations. Together, our results reveal anatomic control of NK cell development and maintenance as tissue-resident populations, whereas mature, terminally differentiated subsets mediate immunosurveillance through diverse peripheral sites. Asymptotic Regge Trajectories of Non-strange Mesons
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of Regge trajectories of non-strange
mesons. In contrast to an existing belief, it is demonstrated that for the
asymptotically linear Regge trajectories the width of heavy hadrons cannot
linearly depend on their mass. Using the data on masses and widths of rho_J,
omega_J, a_J and f_J mesons for the spin values J \leq 6, we extract the
parameters of the asymptotically linear Regge trajectory predicted by the
finite width model of quark gluon bags. As it is shown the obtained parameters
for the data set B correspond to the cross-over temperature lying in the
interval 170.9-175.3 MeV which is consistent with the kinetic freeze-out
temperature of early hadronizing particles found in relativistic heavy ion
collisions at and above the highest SPS energy.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
T2 relaxation times of the retrodiscal tissue in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders and in healthy volunteers: A comparative study
Objective. The aims of this study were to compare the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) retrodiscal tissue T2 relaxation times between patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and asymptomatic volunteers and to assess the diagnostic potential of this approach. Study Design. Patients with TMD (n = 173) and asymptomatic volunteers (n = 17) were examined by using a 1.5-T magnetic resonance scanner. The imaging protocol consisted of oblique sagittal, T2-weighted, 8-echo fast spin echo sequences in the closed mouth position. Retrodiscal tissue T2 relaxation times were obtained. Additionally, disc location and reduction, disc configuration, joint effusion, osteoarthritis, and bone edema or osteonecrosis were classified using MRI scans. The T2 relaxation times of each group were statistically compared. Results. Retrodiscal tissue T2 relaxation times were significantly longer in patient groups than in asymptomatic volunteers (P < .01). T2 relaxation times were significantly longer in all of the morphologic categories. The most important variables affecting retrodiscal tissue T2 relaxation times were disc configuration, joint effusion, and osteoarthritis. Conclusion. Retrodiscal tissue T2 relaxation times of patients with TMD were significantly longer than those of healthy volunteers. This finding may lead to the development of a diagnostic marker to aid in the early detection of TMDs
Solving the degeneracy of the lepton-flavor mixing angle theta_atm by the T2KK two detector neutrino oscillation experiment
If the atmospheric neutrino oscillation amplitude, sin^2 2theta_atm is not
maximal, there is a two fold ambiguity in the neutrino parameter space: sin^2
theta_atm>0.5 or sin^2 theta_atm<0.5. In this article, we study the impact of
this degeneracy, the so-called octant degeneracy, on the T2KK experiment, which
is a proposed extension of the T2K (Tokai-to-Kaimoka) neutrino oscillation
experiment with an additional water cherenkov detector placed in Korea. We find
that the degeneracy between sin^2 theta_atm= 0.40 and 0.60 can be resolved at
the 3sigma level for sin^2 2theta_rct>0.12 (0.08) for the optimal combination
of a 3.0^circ off-axis beam (OAB) at SK (L=295km) and a 0.5^circ OAB at
L=1000km with a far detector of 100kton volume, after 5 years of exposure with
1.0(5.0) time 10^21 POT/year, if the hierarchy is normal. We also study the
influence of the octant degeneracy on the capability of T2KK experiment to
determine the mass hierarchy and the leptonic CP phase. The capability of
rejecting the wrong mass hierarchy grows with increasing sin^2 theta_atm when
the hierarchy is normal, whereas it is rather insensitive to sin^2 theta_atm
for the inverted hierarchy. We also find that the 1sigma allowed region of the
CP phase is not affected significantly even when the octant degeneracy is not
resolved. All our results are obtained for the 22.5 kton Super-Kamiokande as a
near detector and without an anti-neutrino beam.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure

Detailed analysis of the ANO-2 turbine trip test
A RELAP5/MOD1 (Cycle 18) computer code simulation of the ANO-2 turbine trip test from 98% power level was performed for use in vendor code qualification studies. Results focused on potential improvements to simulation capabilities and plant data acquisition systems to provide meaningful comparisons between the calculations and the test data. The turbine trip test was selected because it resulted in an unplanned sequence of events that broadly affected the plant process systems and their controls. The pressurizer spray valve stuck open at an undetermined flow area, and an atmospheric dump valve remained stuck fully open while several atmospheric dump and secondary side safety valves were unavailable throughout. Thus, although the plant remained always in a safe condition, this transient potentially provided an unusual set of data against which the fidelity of a NSSS simulation by RELAP5/MOD1 along with certain vendor analysis codes might be judged
