Formulation and in vitro Evaluation of Eudragit® Microspheres of Stavudine
Purpose: The aim of this study was to formulate and evaluate microencapsulated controlled release preparations of a highly water-soluble drug, stavudine, using Copolymers synthesized from acrylic and methacrylic acid esters (Eudragit RS 100 and RL 100) as the retardant material. .
Methods: Microspheres were prepared by solvent evaporation method using an acetone / liquid paraffin system. Magnesium stearate was used as the droplet stabilizer and n-hexane was added to harden the microspheres. The prepared microspheres were characterized for their micromeritic properties and drug loading, as well by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray powder diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The in vitro release studies were performed in pH 6.8, phosphate buffer.
Results: The prepared microspheres were white, free flowing and spherical in shape. The drug-loaded microspheres showed 67-91% of entrapment and release was extended upto 6 to 8 h. The infrared spectra and differential scanning calorimetry thermographs showed stable character of stavudine in the drug-loaded microspheres and revealed the absence of drug-polymer interactions. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that there was decrease in crystallinity of the drug. Scanning electron microscopy study revealed that the microspheres were spherical and porous in nature.
Conclusion: The best-fit release kinetics was achieved with Higuchi plot followed by zero order and First order. The release of stavudine was influenced by the drug to polymer ratio and particle size & was found to be diffusion controlled.

Superconducting and normal-state interlayer-exchange-coupling in LaSrMnO-YBaCuO_{0.67}_{0.33}{3}$ epitaxial trilayers
The issue of interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic multilayers with
superconducting (SC) spacer is addressed in LaSrMnO
(LSMO) - YBaCuO (YBCO) - LaSrMnO
(LSMO) epitaxial trilayers through resistivity, ac-susceptibility and
magnetization measurements. The ferromagnetic (FM) LSMO layers possessing
in-plane magnetization suppress the critical temperature (T of the
c-axis oriented YBCO thin film spacer. The superconducting order, however,
survives even in very thin layers (thickness d 50 {\AA}, 4
unit cells) at T 25 K. A predominantly antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange
coupling between the moments of the LSMO layers at fields 200 Oe is seen in
the normal as well as the superconducting states of the YBCO spacer. The
exchange energy J ( 0.08 erg/cm at 150 K for d = 75
{\AA}) grows on cooling down to T, followed by truncation of this growth
on entering the superconducting state. The coupling energy J at a fixed
temperature drops exponentially with the thickness of the YBCO layer. The
temperature and d dependencies of this primarily non-oscillatory J
are consistent with the coupling theories for systems in which transport is
controlled by tunneling. The truncation of the monotonic T dependence of
J below T suggests inhibition of single electron tunneling across
the CuO planes as the in-plane gap parameter acquires a non-zero value.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Earthworm management in tropical agroecosystems
Data of 145 and 69 earthworm communities from managed and natural ecosystems, respectively, of four continents and 15 tropical countries were analysed. The aim of the study was to separate the influence of phylogenetic, environmental and agricultural factors on the structure of earthworm communities in agroecosystems, and to evaluate their relative importance in the whole soil macrofauna community. Earthworms comprise 40-90% of macrofaunal biomass in most ecosystems except for annually cropped systems. Three major conclusions were drawn from the analysis of community structure (regional analysis) : (i) crops were, independently of region, characterized by a loss of native species and by the dominance of exotic endogeics ; (ii) pastures were highly heterogenous in terms of native or exotic species dominance ; (iii) native species survived better in management ecosystems of India and Africa than in Mexico-Central America. Local analysis in selected countries indicated that, as a general rule, the intensity of agricultural practices is negatively correlated with the amount of native species and the total abundance and biomass of earthworms ; the only exception was found in the conversion of savannas to pastures, in Colombian llanos. Development of the electroacoustic dewatering (EAD) process for fine/ultrafine coal
Battelle is undertaking engineering development of an advanced process for the dewatering of fine and ultrafine coals. The advanced process, called Electroacoustic Dewatering (EAD), capitalizes on the adaptation of synergistic effects of electric and acoustic fields to commercial coal dewatering systems, such as belt filter presses. The Battelle project for demonstrating the potential for commercial application of the EAD process for coal has the following objectives: to validate the expected technical feasibility and energy conservation/economic benefits of the EAD process as applied to fine ({minus}100 mesh) and ultrafine ({minus}325 mesh) coal; and to obtain data from a continuous, process research unit (PRU) in order to conduct a reliable economic analysis and to design commercial EAD filters as well as to promote adaptation of the process by the coal preparation industry. Rings and rigidity transitions in network glasses
Three elastic phases of covalent networks, (I) floppy, (II) isostatically
rigid and (III) stressed-rigid have now been identified in glasses at specific
degrees of cross-linking (or chemical composition) both in theory and
experiments. Here we use size-increasing cluster combinatorics and constraint
counting algorithms to study analytically possible consequences of
self-organization. In the presence of small rings that can be locally I, II or
III, we obtain two transitions instead of the previously reported single
percolative transition at the mean coordination number , one from a
floppy to an isostatic rigid phase, and a second one from an isostatic to a
stressed rigid phase. The width of the intermediate phase and the
order of the phase transitions depend on the nature of medium range order
(relative ring fractions). We compare the results to the Group IV
chalcogenides, such as Ge-Se and Si-Se, for which evidence of an intermediate
phase has been obtained, and for which estimates of ring fractions can be made

Earthworm management in tropical agroecosystems
Ecological and demographic parameters of 26 species of native and exotic earthworms species common in tropical agroecosystems, with large environmental tolerance and/or extended distribution were investigated. Principal component analysis (PCA) isolated four groups : (i) large native endogeic and anecic species (16-32 g individual fresh wt) with long generation time (2-4 years), low fecundity (0.5-3.1 cocoons/year/adult) and one hatchling per cocoon ; (ii) medium size species (1.2-6 g) endogeic mesohumic, with intermediate fecundity (1.3-45 cocoons/year/adult) ; (iii) small species (0.17-1.25 g f.w.) mainly endogeic polyhumic, with short generation time (3-7 months), intermediate fecundity (10-68 cocoons/year/adult) and one hatchling per cocoon ; and (iv) generally small (80-150 mg f.w.) species mainly exotic and epigeic, with short generation time (1-3 months), very high fecundity (50-350 cocoons/year/adult) and up to three hatchlings per cocoon. Casts may be either large globular or small granular. The selective investigations of large organic particles and small mineral particles (clays) concentrates total organic matter in the casts. There is an intense mineralization rate of nitrogen in the casts (6-29% of organic N), exotic worms seeming to be less efficient than natives at mineralizing N. The mineral phosphorus content of casts is always at least 30% higher than in the non-ingested soil. All these worms ingest daily, on average, three times their own weight of soil at the adult stage (1-9) and much more when juvenile ; up to 1000 Mg dry soil/ha may transit yearly through earthworm guts. Effect of Moringa oleifera on hematological parameters of calves reared in industrial fluorotic area
Abstract Aim: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the ameliorative potential of dried Moringa oleifera fruit powder in fluorosis affected calves reared around the vicinity of aluminium smelter plant. Materials and Methods: Total 107 calves were screened on the basis of clinical signs and higher plasma fluoride (more than 0.2 ppm) level for evidence of fluorosis. Out of that, 90 samples found positive and from them 18 calves of 6-12 months age group were selected and divided equally into three groups named as Group II, III, and IV. Group II remained as disease control group whereas Group III calves were supplemented with dried M. oleifera fruit powder of 25 g/calve for 60 days. Group IV calves were supplemented with calcium carbonate at 100 mg/kg body weight and boric acid at 10 mg/kg for the same experimental period. Group I consisted of six numbers of healthy calves taken from the non-fluorotic zone, i.e. Bhubaneswar. Plasma fluoride level, hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), total leukocyte count (TLC), differential count (DC), total erythrocyte count, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular Hb (MCH), and MCH concentration (MCHC) were estimated on day 0, 30, and 60 of the experiment. Results: Supplementation of dried M. oleifera fruit powder to fluorosis affected calves resulted in significant reduction in plasma fluoride level and increase in Hb%, PCV, TLC and altered DC. Similar results were also recorded in calcium+boron group, except PCV and Hb. No significant changes were observed in MCV, MCH, and MCHC values. Conclusion: The present study concluded that supplementation of dried M. oleifera fruit powder daily for 60 days has shown protection against chronic fluoride toxicity in calves
Results from the Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) experiment at Soudan
We report the result of a blinded search for Weakly Interacting Massive
Particles (WIMPs) using the majority of the SuperCDMS Soudan dataset. With an
exposure of 1690 kg days, a single candidate event is observed, consistent with
expected backgrounds. This analysis (combined with previous Ge results) sets an
upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP--nucleon cross section of () cm at 46 GeV/. These results set the
strongest limits for WIMP--germanium-nucleus interactions for masses 12
GeV/
