On the Classification of UGC1382 as a Giant Low Surface Brightness Galaxy
We provide evidence that UGC1382, long believed to be a passive elliptical
galaxy, is actually a giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxy which rivals
the archetypical GLSB Malin 1 in size. Like other GLSB galaxies, it has two
components: a high surface brightness disk galaxy surrounded by an extended low
surface brightness (LSB) disk. For UGC1382, the central component is a
lenticular system with an effective radius of 6 kpc. Beyond this, the LSB disk
has an effective radius of ~38 kpc and an extrapolated central surface
brightness of ~26 mag/arcsec^2. Both components have a combined stellar mass of
~8x10^10 M_sun, and are embedded in a massive (10^10 M_sun) low-density (<3
M_sun/pc^2) HI disk with a radius of 110 kpc, making this one of the largest
isolated disk galaxies known. The system resides in a massive dark matter halo
of at least 2x10^12 M_sun. Although possibly part of a small group, its low
density environment likely plays a role in the formation and retention of the
giant LSB and HI disks. We model the spectral energy distributions and find
that the LSB disk is likely older than the lenticular component. UGC1382 has
UV-optical colors typical of galaxies transitioning through the green valley.
Within the LSB disk are spiral arms forming stars at extremely low
efficiencies. The gas depletion time scale of ~10^11 yr suggests that UGC1382
may be a very long term resident of the green valley. We find that the
formation and evolution of the LSB disk is best explained by the accretion of

A mass spectrometry imaging based approach for prognosis prediction in UICC stage I/II colon cancer
Simple Summary
Tumor treatment is heavily dictated by the tumor progression status. However, in colon cancer, it is difficult to predict disease progression in the early stages. In this study, we have employed a proteomic analysis using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI). MALDI-MSI is a technique that measures the molecular content of (tumor) tissue. We analyzed tumor samples of 276 patients. If the patients developed distant metastasis, they were considered to have a more aggressive tumor type than the patients that did not. In this comparative study, we have developed bioinformatics methods that can predict the tendency of tumor progression and advance a couple of molecules that could be used as prognostic markers of colon cancer. The prediction of tumor progression can help to choose a more adequate treatment for each individual patient.
Abstract
Currently, pathological evaluation of stage I/II colon cancer, following the Union Internationale Contre Le Cancer (UICC) guidelines, is insufficient to identify patients that would benefit from adjuvant treatment. In our study, we analyzed tissue samples from 276 patients with colon cancer utilizing mass spectrometry imaging. Two distinct approaches are herein presented for data processing and analysis. In one approach, four different machine learning algorithms were applied to predict the tendency to develop metastasis, which yielded accuracies over 90% for three of the models. In the other approach, 1007 m/z features were evaluated with regards to their prognostic capabilities, yielding two m/z features as promising prognostic markers. One feature was identified as a fragment from collagen (collagen 3A1), hinting that a higher collagen content within the tumor is associated with poorer outcomes. Identification of proteins that reflect changes in the tumor and its microenvironment could give a very much-needed prediction of a patient’s prognosis, and subsequently assist in the choice of a more adequate treatment

Der Band umfasst zahlreiche Beispiele von Lehrenden, die ihre Veranstaltungen in mehreren Aspekten ‚lernreich(er)’ gestaltet haben. Die Konzepte wurden alle im Rahmen des Vertiefungsmoduls des Programms „Professionelle Lehrkompetenz für die Hochschule“ des Netzwerks "hochschuldidaktik nrw" an der Universität Siegen entwickelt oder weiterentwickelt. Die elf Beiträge umfassen ein breites Spektrum an Veranstaltungsformaten und Fächern: Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften sind ebenso vertreten wie Architektur, Pädagogik, Soziale Arbeit und Literaturwissenschaft. Bei den Veranstaltungen handelt es sich um Praktika, Seminare, Übungen usw., oft mit Projektcharakter bzw. -elementen, häufig auch mit wechselnden Lernorten, semester-begleitend oder kompakt
HEGPOL: Randomized, placebo controlled, multicenter, double-blind clinical trial to investigate hepatoprotective effects of glycine in the postoperative phase of liver transplantation [ISRCTN69350312]
BACKGROUND: Kupffer cell-dependent ischemia / reperfusion (I/R) injury after liver transplantation is still of high clinical relevance, as it is strongly associated with primary dysfunction and primary nonfunction of the graft. Glycine, a non-toxic, non-essential amino acid has been conclusively shown in various experiments to prevent both activation of Kupffer cells and reperfusion injury. Based on both experimental and preliminary clinical data this study protocol was designed to further evaluate the early effect of glycine after liver transplantation. METHODS / DESIGN: A prospective double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled multicenter study with two parallel groups in a total of 130 liver transplant recipients was designed to assess the effect of multiple intravenous doses of glycine after transplantation. Primary endpoints in hierarchical order are: peak levels of both aspartat-amino-transaminase (AST) and alanine-amino-transaminase (ALT) as surrogates for the progression of liver related injury, as well as both graft and patient survival up to 2 years after transplantation. Furthermore, the effect of glycine on cyclosporine A-induced nephrotoxicity is evaluated. DISCUSSION: The ongoing clinical trial represents an advanced element of the research chain, along which a scientific hypothesis has to go by, in order to reach the highest level of evidence; a randomized, prospective, controlled double-blinded clinical trial. If the data of this ongoing research project confirm prior findings, glycine would improve the general outcome after liver transplantation
The Enigmatics of Affect
Affective computation generally focuses on the informatics of affect: structuring, formalizing, and representing emotion as informational units. We propose instead an enigmatics of affect, a critical technical practice that respects the rich and undefinable complexities of human affective experience. Our interactive installation, the Influencing Machine, allows users to explore a dynamic landscape of emotionally expressive sound and child-like drawings, using a tangible, intuitive input device that supports open-ended engagement. The Influencing Machine bridges the subjective experience of the user and the necessary objective rationality of the underlying code. It functions as a cultural probe, reflecting and challenging users to reflect on the cultural meaning of affective computation.
