Approaching The Scarlet Letter: Spatiality as theme and method

Although my goal is ultimately to undersatnd Hawthorne\u27s The Scarlet Letter, the emphasis of this thesis is upon ways of approaching that goal. Only the last chapter is directly about the text of that romance. In the first chapter I consider the state of the field, religion and literature, with a view to identifying my own position in it. In the second, I look at the cultural historical contexts for reading the story, specifically, the seventeenth century Puritans and the nineteenth century American romance. The third chapter focuses on variants of the idea of spatiality, for instance, sacred space, topophilia, and embodiment. And in my fourth chapter I look at the spatial themes and relationships in The Scarlet Letter

Generalizations of the Abstract Boundary singularity theorem

The Abstract Boundary singularity theorem was first proven by Ashley and Scott. It links the existence of incomplete causal geodesics in strongly causal, maximally extended spacetimes to the existence of Abstract Boundary essential singularities, i.e., non-removable singular boundary points. We give two generalizations of this theorem: the first to continuous causal curves and the distinguishing condition, the second to locally Lipschitz curves in manifolds such that no inextendible locally Lipschitz curve is totally imprisoned. To do this we extend generalized affine parameters from $C^1$ curves to locally Lipschitz curves.Comment: 24 page

The Revised CII-ESRI Survey - A Note. Quarterly Economic Commentary Special Article, July 1985

This note gives a brief description of the coverage and the results of the revised CII-ESRI Monthly Industrial Survey. As discussed in the previous article, by Conniffe, in this Commentary, up to the present the Survey could be improved on two grounds in particular, namely on the sample and on seasonality. The problem of seasonality can be partially dealt with by seasonally correcting the results along the lines suggested by Conniffe. The sample meanwhile has been enlarged and the weights used to aggregate the responses have been updated. The computer program used for the analysis has also been changed. Though not affecting the results, this affords greater flexibility in drafting the tables of responses

Patterns of Elite Faunal Utilization in Moundville, Alabama

In recent years, zooarchaeological research has begun to examine the roles of animals as part of the suite of symbols employed at the ongoing social, ceremonial, and political dynamics of prehistoric cultural systems. In the southeastern United States, studies of late prehistoric Mississippian chiefdoms have documented differences in species composition and meat cuts associated with particular social contexts of consumption-for instance, ceremonial feasting vs. private meals-and also with gross distinctions in social rank-elite vs. commoner. Differences in the latter reflect elite control of procurement as well as cultural rides that assign meanings to certain species, which in so doing regulates access to their consumption. Faunal samples collected by recent mound excavations at the Moundville site in west-central Alabama provide the basis for an examination of more subtle differences in the consumption patterns of elite residents. Zooarchaeological samples produced by two elite households, although generally similar and fitting expectations for elite consumption well, are distinguished by differences in the distribution of rare species, the role of fish, and possibly by evidence of differences in food waste, distinctions that c an be associated with interpretations of these households\u27 relative status at Moundville society drawn from other classes of archaeological data

Three component fermion pairing in two dimensions

We study pairing of an interacting three component Fermi gas in two dimensions. By using a mean field theory to decouple the interactions between different pairs of Fermi components, we study the free energy landscapes as a function of various system parameters including chemical potentials, binding energies, and temperature. We find that the s-wave pairing channel is determined by both chemical potentials and the interaction strengths between the three available channels. We find a second order thermal phase transition and a series of first order quantum phase transitions for a homogenous system as we change the parameters. In particular, for symmetric parameters, we find the simultaneous existence of three superfluid orders as well as re-entrant quantum phase transitions as we tune the parameters.Comment: 6 pages and 5 figures. Spectral Line Removal in the LIGO Data Analysis System (LDAS)

High power in narrow frequency bands, spectral lines, are a feature of an interferometric gravitational wave detector's output. Some lines are coherent between interferometers, in particular, the 2 km and 4 km LIGO Hanford instruments. This is of concern to data analysis techniques, such as the stochastic background search, that use correlations between instruments to detect gravitational radiation. Several techniques of `line removal' have been proposed. Where a line is attributable to a measurable environmental disturbance, a simple linear model may be fitted to predict, and subsequently subtract away, that line. This technique has been implemented (as the command oelslr) in the LIGO Data Analysis System (LDAS).
