Solar tracking control system Sun Chaser
The solar tracking control system, Sun Chaser, a method of tracking the Sun in all types of weather conditions is described. The Sun Chaser follows the Sun from east to west in clear or cloudy weather, and resets itself to the east position after sundown in readiness for the next sunrise
Solar tracking system
A solar tracker for a solar collector is described in detail. The collector is angularly oriented by a motor wherein the outputs of two side-by-side photodetectors are discriminated as to three ranges: a first corresponding to a low light or darkness condition; a second corresponding to light intensity lying in an intermediate range; and a third corresponding to light above an intermediate range, direct sunlight. The first output drives the motor to a selected maximum easterly angular position; the second enables the motor to be driven westerly at the Earth rotational rate; and the third output, the separate outputs of the two photodetectors, differentially controls the direction of rotation of the motor to effect actual tracking of the Sun
The 2-generalized knot group determines the knot
Generalized knot groups were introduced independently by Kelly

Understanding entanglement as resource: locally distinguishing unextendible product bases
It is known that the states in an unextendible product basis (UPB) cannot be
distinguished perfectly when the parties are restricted to local operations and
classical communication (LOCC). Previous discussions of such bases have left
open the following question: What entanglement resources are necessary and/or
sufficient for this task to be possible with LOCC? In this paper, I present
protocols which use entanglement more efficiently than teleportation to
distinguish certain classes of UPB's. The ideas underlying my approach to this
problem offer rather general insight into why entanglement is useful for such
tasks.Comment: Final, published version. Many revisions following very useful
suggestions of the referee have been added. In particular, Appendix A has
been completely rewritte
Delayed Recombination
Under the standard model for recombination of the primeval plasma, and the
cold dark matter model for structure formation, recent measurements of the
first peak in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background
temperature indicate the spatial geometry of the universe is nearly flat. If
sources of Lya resonance radiation, such as stars or active galactic nuclei,
were present at z ~ 1000 they would delay recombination, shifting the first
peak to larger angular scales, and producing a positive bias in this measure of
space curvature. It can be distinguished from space curvature by its
suppression of the secondary peaks in the spectrum.Comment: submitted to ApJ
Innovative Opportunities for Elementary and Middle School Teachers to Maintain Currency in Mathematics and Science: A Community College-School System Partnership
Since 1992 the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College – in response to requests from local school systems – has developed four innovative methods of assisting elementary, secondary and middle school teachers to enhance their content knowledge in science and mathematics, as well as integrate curriculum units for classroom presentation. These methods are based on the assumptions that: - While teachers at this level have fundamental understanding of math and science, if they wish to incorporate new concepts or technologies from these fields, graduate level content courses are generally beyond their background level. - Community College faculty can often provide a bridge that connects advanced content in science and mathematics with the applications that can be adapted to elementary/middle school curriculum. - Presenting content to a mixed audience of teachers from K-8 allows teachers to see how content can be adapted to grade levels above and below. - Content delivery methods must be interactive and must be responsive to the multiple demands on these teachers’ time. This requires flexibility in scheduling and course requirements
A comparison of methods to evaluate energy expenditure of incubating wandering albatrosses
Measurements of incubation energetics can vary depending on the method used to measure metabolism of an incubating bird. Therefore, we evaluated the energy expenditure of six male and four female wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans Linnaeus) using doubly labeled water (DLW), the rate of mass loss, and estimates of metabolic water production derived from water influx rate (WIR). Incubation metabolic rates (IMR) determined with DLW ( 169 ± 21 kJ kg d SD) were significantly lower than estimates derived from mass loss ( 277 ± 46kJ kg d SD) and WIR ( males=289 ± 60 kJ kg d vs. females = 400 ± 69 kJ kg d SD). Estimates of IMR from f WIR were similar to IMR (305 ± 39 kJ kg d SD) determined by respirometry in a previous study, and IMR from DLW was similar to estimates based on heart rate (HR; 147 ± 26 kJ d SD) determined in another study. Ap- 147 26 plying the different measurements of IMR to construct an en-ergy budget, we estimate that a breeding pair of wandering albatrosses spends 124--234 MJ to incubate the egg for 78 d. Finally, IMRs determined with DLW and HR were similar
Space Charge Effects in Ferroelectric Thin Films
The effects of space charges on hysteresis loops and field distributions in
ferroelectrics have been investigated numerically using the phenomenological
Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. Cases with the ferroelectric fully and
partially depleted have been considered. In general, increasing the number of
charged impurities results in a lowering of the polarization and coercive field
values. Squarer loops were observed in the partially depleted cases and a
method was proposed to identify fully depleted samples experimentally from
dielectric and polarization measurements alone. Unusual field distributions
found for higher dopant concentrations have some interesting implications for
leakage mechanisms and limit the range of validity of usual semiconductor
equations for carrier transport.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figure
