Dispersion of tracer particles in a compressible flow
The turbulent diffusion of Lagrangian tracer particles has been studied in a
flow on the surface of a large tank of water and in computer simulations. The
effect of flow compressibility is captured in images of particle fields. The
velocity field of floating particles has a divergence, whose probability
density function shows exponential tails. Also studied is the motion of pairs
and triplets of particles. The mean square separation is fitted to
the scaling form ~ t^alpha, and in contrast with the
Richardson-Kolmogorov prediction, an extended range with a reduced scaling
exponent of alpha=1.65 pm 0.1 is found. Clustering is also manifest in strongly
deformed triangles spanned within triplets of tracers.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Asymptotic Expansions for Large Deviation Probabilities of Noncentral Generalized Chi-Square Distributions
AbstractAsymptotic expansions for large deviation probabilities are used to approximate the cumulative distribution functions of noncentral generalized chi-square distributions, preferably in the far tails. The basic idea of how to deal with the tail probabilities consists in first rewriting these probabilities as large parameter values of the Laplace transform of a suitably defined function fk; second making a series expansion of this function, and third applying a certain modification of Watson's lemma. The function fk is deduced by applying a geometric representation formula for spherical measures to the multivariate domain of large deviations under consideration. At the so-called dominating point, the largest main curvature of the boundary of this domain tends to one as the large deviation parameter approaches infinity. Therefore, the dominating point degenerates asymptotically. For this reason the recent multivariate asymptotic expansion for large deviations in Breitung and Richter (1996, J. Multivariate Anal.58, 1–20) does not apply. Assuming a suitably parametrized expansion for the inverse g−1 of the negative logarithm of the density-generating function, we derive a series expansion for the function fk. Note that low-order coefficients from the expansion of g−1 influence practically all coefficients in the expansion of the tail probabilities. As an application, classification probabilities when using the quadratic discriminant function are discussed
Measurement of heavy-hole spin dephasing in (InGa)As quantum dots
We measure the spin dephasing of holes localized in self-assembled (InGa)As
quantum dots by spin noise spectroscopy. The localized holes show a distinct
hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spin bath despite the p-type symmetry of
the valence band states. The experiments reveal a short spin relaxation time
{\tau}_{fast}^{hh} of 27 ns and a second, long spin relaxation time
{\tau}_{slow}^{hh} which exceeds the latter by more than one order of
magnitude. The two times are attributed to heavy hole spins aligned
perpendicular and parallel to the stochastic nuclear magnetic field. Intensity
dependent measurements and numerical simulations reveal that the long
relaxation time is still obscured by light absorption, despite low laser
intensity and large detuning. Off-resonant light absorption causes a
suppression of the spin noise signal due to the creation of a second hole
entailing a vanishing hole spin polarization.Comment: accepted to be published in AP
Spatially resolved ultrafast precessional magnetization reversal
Spatially resolved measurements of quasi-ballistic precessional magnetic
switching in a microstructure are presented. Crossing current wires allow
detailed study of the precessional switching induced by coincident longitudinal
and transverse magnetic field pulses. Though the response is initially
spatially uniform, dephasing occurs leading to nonuniformity and transient
demagnetization. This nonuniformity comes in spite of a novel method for
suppression of end domains in remanence. The results have implications for the
reliability of ballistic precessional switching in magnetic devices.Comment: 17 pages (including 4 figures), submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Effects of lattice mismatch on interfacial structures of liquid and solidified Al in contact with hetero-phase substrates: MD simulations

The MD simulations were conducted for Al/fcc (111) substrates with varied misfits. The order parameter and atomic arrangement indicated that the in-plane ordering of the liquid at the interface decreases significantly with an increase of the misfit, i.e., solid-like for small misfit and liquid-like for large misfit. Further, our MD simulation results revealed that a perfect orientation relationship forms at the interface between the substrate and the solidified Al for a misfit of less than -3% and the boundary is coherent. With an increase in the misfit, Shockley partial and extended dislocations form at the interface, and the boundary becomes a semi-coherent or low-angle twist boundary.EPSR
Quantum repeaters based on entanglement purification
We study the use of entanglement purification for quantum communication over
long distances. For distances much longer than the coherence length of a
corresponding noisy quantum channel, the fidelity of transmission is usually so
low that standard purification methods are not applicable. It is however
possible to divide the channel into shorter segments that are purified
separately and then connected by the method of entanglement swapping. This
method can be much more efficient than schemes based on quantum error
correction, as it makes explicit use of two-way classical communication. An
important question is how the noise, introduced by imperfect local operations
(that constitute the protocols of purification and the entanglement swapping),
accumulates in such a compound channel, and how it can be kept below a certain
noise level. To treat this problem, we first study the applicability and the
efficiency of entanglement purification protocols in the situation of imperfect
local operations. We then present a scheme that allows entanglement
purification over arbitrary long channels and tolerates errors on the per-cent
level. It requires a polynomial overhead in time, and an overhead in local
resources that grows only logarithmically with the length of the channel.Comment: 19 pages, 16 figure
