Orbital polarization and magnetization for independent particles in disordered media
Formulas for the contribution of the conduction electrons to the polarization
and magnetization are derived for disordered systems and within a one-particle
framework. These results generalize known formulas for Bloch electrons and the
presented proofs considerably simplify and strengthen prior justifications. The
new formulas show that orbital polarization and magnetization are of geometric
nature. This leads to quantization for a periodically driven Piezo effect as
well as the derivative of the magnetization w.r.t. the chemical potential. It
is also shown how the latter is connected to boundary currents in Chern
insulators. The main technical tools in the proofs are an adaption of Nenciu's
super-adiabatic theory to C-dynamical systems and Bellissard's Ito

Simulation of vector boson plus many jet final states at the high luminosity LHC
We present a novel event generation framework for the efficient simulation of
vector boson plus multi-jet backgrounds at the high-luminosity LHC and at
possible future hadron colliders. MPI parallelization of parton-level and
particle-level event generation and storage of parton-level event information
using the HDF5 data format allow us to obtain leading-order merged Monte-Carlo
predictions with up to nine jets in the final state. The parton-level event
samples generated in this manner correspond to an integrated luminosity of
3ab-1 and are made publicly available for future phenomenological studies.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 5 table
Molecular Interactions. On the Ambiguity of Ordinary Statements in Biomedical Literature
Statements about the behavior of biochemical entities (e.g., about the interaction between two proteins) abound in the
literature on molecular biology and are increasingly becoming the targets of information extraction and text mining techniques.
We show that an accurate analysis of the semantics of such statements reveals a number of ambiguities that have to be taken
into account in the practice of biomedical ontology engineering: Such statements can not only be understood as event reporting
statements, but also as ascriptions of dispositions or tendencies that may or may not refer to collectives of interacting molecules
or even to collectives of interaction events
Origin of non-linear piezoelectricity in III-V semiconductors: Internal strain and bond ionicity from hybrid-functional density functional theory
We derive first- and second-order piezoelectric coefficients for the
zinc-blende III-V semiconductors, {Al,Ga,In}-{N,P,As,Sb}. The results are
obtained within the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid-functional approach in the
framework of density functional theory and the Berry-phase theory of electric
polarization. To achieve a meaningful interpretation of the results, we build
an intuitive phenomenological model based on the description of internal strain
and the dynamics of the electronic charge centers. We discuss in detail first-
and second-order internal strain effects, together with strain-induced changes
in ionicity. This analysis reveals that the relatively large importance in the
III-Vs of non-linear piezoelectric effects compared to the linear ones arises
because of a delicate balance between the ionic polarization contribution due
to internal strain relaxation effects, and the contribution due to the
electronic charge redistribution induced by macroscopic and internal strain
Outlaw Community Innovations
Recent studies of outlaw communities provide qualitative evidence of their existence and the organisation of the underlying innovation processes. We provide descriptive results from a large scale survey of two online outlaw communities focussing on Microsoft's XBox. In line with previous findings, we identify two types of participants in outlaw communities - user innovators and adopters. Based on 2,256 responses, we find that users modify their XBox mainly to be able to increase the set of available functions of their XBox. Users are also motivated to modify their XBox for the sake of having fun and to conduct pirate behaviour. Finally, the results from our survey suggest that user innovators are largely intrinsically motivated by fun and the intellectual stimulation of writing code for homebrew software.Outlaw community innovation; video game consoles; homebrew software
Banking and sovereign risk in the euro area
We study the determinants of sovereign bond spreads in the euro area since the introduction of the euro. We show that an aggregate risk factor is a main driver of spreads. This factor also plays an important indirect role for risk spreads through its interaction with the size and structure of national banking sectors. When aggregate risk increases, countries with large banking sectors and low equity ratios in the banking sector experience greater widening in yield spreads, suggesting that financial markets perceive a larger risk that governments will have to rescue banks, increasing public debt and therefore sovereign risk. Bullying Roles in Changing Contexts: The Stability of Victim and Bully Roles from Primary to Secondary School
The present study was conducted to predict bullying roles over a six years time period and across contexts differing in the degree of peer hierarchies. Out of two representative data sets from primary (N = 1525) and secondary school (N = 2958), 282 children (156 boys; 126 girls) were followed up longitudinally. Self reports on bullying experiences and peer reports about social status were assessed by a structured individual interview (in primary school) and by questionnaire given classwise (in secondary school). Risk analyses showed, that only a bully role in primary school yields a risk to be sustained in secondary school. However, victims in primary school classes with a more pronounced degree of hierarchical structuring proved stable in their role while the victim role was unstable from primary school classes with low hierarchical structuring. This interaction did not apply to bully role stability. Differential characteristics of the victim and the bully role in primary school and secondary school settings are discussed.Die vorliegende Untersuchung wurde durchgeführt, um Bullyingrollen über einen Zeitraum von sechs Jahren und Kontexte, die sich im Ausmaß der sozialen Strukturierung unterschieden, vorherzusagen. Auf der Grundlage von zwei repräsentativen Datensätzen aus der Grundschule (n= 1525) und der weiterführenden Schule (N= 2958) wurden dazu die Daten von 282 Kinder (156 Jungen, 126 Mädchen) längsschnittlich analysiert. Die Selbstberichte über Bullyingerfahrungen und Mitschülerberichte über den sozialen Status der Kinder wurden in der Grundschule durch ein strukturiertes Interview und in der weiterführenden Schule durch klassenweise Fragebogenerhebung erfasst. Riskikoanalysen zeigen, dass nur die Täterrolle in der Grundschule einen Risikofaktor für eine Täterrolle in der weiterführenden Schule darstellt. Eine Opferrolle war hingegen nur dann stabil, wenn die Opfer in Grundschulklassen mit schon ausgeprägten Dominanzstrukturen viktimisiert wurden, während aus Grundschulklassen mit geringer hierarchischer Strukturierung keine stabile Opferrolle vorhersagbar war. Dieses Interaktionmuster gilt nicht für die Stabilität der Täterrollen. Differentielle Charakteristika der Opferrolle und der Täterrolle in der Grundschule und der weiterführenden Schule werden diskutiert
