Postural Synergies and Their Development
The recent developments of a particular approach to analyzing motor synergies based on the principle of motor abundance has allowed a quantitative assessment of multieffector coordination in motor tasks involving anticipatory adjustments to self-triggered postural perturbations and in voluntary posturalsway. This approach, the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) hypothesis, is based on an assumption that the central nervous system organizes covariation of elemental variables to stabilize important performance variables in a task-specific manner. In particular, this approach has been used to demonstrate and to assess the emergence of synergies and their modification with motor practice in typical persons and persons with Down syndrome. The framework of the UCM hypothesis allows the formulation of testable hypotheses with respect to developing postural synergies in typically and atypically developing persons
Neural defects and cardiac arrhythmia in fish larvae following embryonic exposure to 2,2\u27,4,4\u27-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE 47)
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are added to plastics, polyurethane foam, and textiles as a flame retardant. While PBDEs play a key role in reducing loss of human life and property from fires, these flame retardants have become pervasive organic contaminants in the environment and in the tissues of fish, birds, marine mammals, and humans. Levels of PBDEs in wildlife and humans continue to rise, raising concerns about potential ecological and health risks associated with exposure to these chemicals. Nevertheless, there is little currently known about the toxicological effects of PBDE exposure. Here, we examined the developmental toxicity of the PBDE congener 2,2\u27,4,4\u27-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE 47) using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) as an ontogenetic model. Zebrafish embryos were exposed continuously to dissolved phase PBDE 47 (100–5000 μg/l) beginning 3–5 h post-fertilization (hpf). Fish treated with the highest concentrations of PBDE 47 delayed hatching, had reduced growth post-hatching, and displayed an abnormal dorsal curvature of the body with flexion at the hindbrain. By 96 h post-fertilization larvae exposed to PBDE 47 had significant tachycardia, which progressed into atrioventricular block arrhythmias. Microinjection of fluorescent dye into the hindbrain ventricle revealed that cerebrospinal fluid in the neural tube and brain ventricles flowed more slowly in fish larvae exposed to PBDE 47, a likely etiology for the dorsal curvature. Similar, though much less pronounced, developmental toxicity also occurred in larvae exposed to PBDE 47 only for a 20 h period during early embryogenesis (3–23 hpf), suggesting that PBDEs incorporated in lipid of the egg are bioavailable and cause toxicity later in life. Taken together, this work indicates that exposure to PBDE 47 can cause morphological abnormalities, impair cardiovascular function and cerebrospinal fluid flow, and provides a tractable starting point for using the zebrafish model to explore molecular mechanisms of PBDE toxicity
Evidence for Hox-specified positional identities in adult vasculature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The concept of specifying positional information in the adult cardiovascular system is largely unexplored. While the <it>Hox </it>transcriptional regulators have to be viewed as excellent candidates for assuming such a role, little is known about their presumptive cardiovascular control functions and <it>in vivo </it>expression patterns.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We demonstrate that conventional reporter gene analysis in transgenic mice is a useful approach for defining highly complex <it>Hox </it>expression patterns in the adult vascular network as exemplified by our <it>lacZ </it>reporter gene models for <it>Hoxa3 </it>and <it>Hoxc11</it>. These mice revealed expression in subsets of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and endothelial cells (ECs) located in distinct regions of the vasculature that roughly correspond to the embryonic expression domains of the two genes. These reporter gene patterns were validated as authentic indicators of endogenous gene expression by immunolabeling and PCR analysis. Furthermore, we show that persistent reporter gene expression in cultured cells derived from vessel explants facilitates <it>in vitro </it>characterization of phenotypic properties as exemplified by the differential response of <it>Hoxc11-lacZ</it>-positive <it>versus</it>-negative cells in migration assays and to serum.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The data support a conceptual model of <it>Hox-</it>specified positional identities in adult blood vessels, which is of likely relevance for understanding the mechanisms underlying regional physiological diversities in the cardiovascular system. The data also demonstrate that conventional <it>Hox </it>reporter gene mice are useful tools for visualizing complex <it>Hox </it>expression patterns in the vascular network that might be unattainable otherwise. Finally, these mice are a resource for the isolation and phenotypic characterization of specific subpopulations of vascular cells marked by distinct <it>Hox </it>expression profiles.</p
The Solar Neighborhood XXV: Discovery of New Proper Motion Stars with 0.40 "/yr > mu > 0.18 "/yr between Declinations -47 degrees and 00 degrees
We present 2817 new southern proper motion systems with 0.40 "/yr > mu > 0.18
"/yr and declination between -47 degrees and 00 degrees. This is a continuation
of the SuperCOSMOS-RECONS (SCR) proper motion searches of the southern sky. We
use the same photometric relations as previous searches to provide distance
estimates based on the assumption that the objects are single main sequence
stars. We find 79 new red dwarf systems predicted to be within 25 pc, including
a few new components of previously known systems. Two systems - SCR 1731-2452
at 9.5 pc and SCR 1746-3214 at 9.9 pc - are anticipated to be within 10 pc. We
also find 23 new white dwarf candidates with distance estimates of 15-66 pc, as
well as 360 new red subdwarf candidates. With this search, we complete the SCR
sweep of the southern sky for stars with mu > 0.18 "/yr and R_59F < 16.5,
resulting in a total of 5042 objects in 4724 previously unreported proper
motion systems. Here we provide selected comprehensive lists from our SCR
proper motion search to date, including 152 red dwarf systems estimated to be
within 25 pc (nine within 10 pc), 46 white dwarfs (ten within 25 pc), and 598
subdwarf candidates. The results of this search suggest that there are more
nearby systems to be found at fainter magnitudes and lower proper motion limits
than those probed so far.Comment: 47 pages, 16 of text. 7 figure
The Solar Neighborhood XV: Discovery of New High Proper Motion Stars with mu >= 0.4"/yr between Declinations -47 degrees and 00 degrees
We report the discovery of 152 new high proper motion systems (mu >= 0.4"/yr)
in the southern sky (Declination = -47 degrees to 00 degrees) brighter than
UKST plate R_{59F} =16.5 via our SuperCOSMOS-RECONS (SCR) search. This paper
complements Paper XII in The Solar Neighborhood series, which covered the
region from Declination = -90 degrees to -47 degrees and discussed all 147 new
systems from the southernmost phase of the search. Among the total of 299
systems from both papers, there are 148 (71 in Paper XII, 77 in this paper) new
systems moving faster than 0.5"/yr that are additions to the classic ``LHS''
(Luyten Half Second) sample. These constitute an 8% increase in the sample of
all stellar systems with mu >= 0.5"/yr in the southern sky.
As in Paper XII, distance estimates are provided for the systems reported
here based upon a combination of photographic plate magnitudes and 2MASS
photometry, assuming all stars are on the main sequence. Two SCR systems from
the portion of the sky included in this paper are anticipated to be within 10
pc, and an additional 23 are within 25 pc. In total, the results presented in
Paper XII and here for this SCR sweep of the entire southern sky include five
new systems within 10 pc and 38 more between 10 and 25 pc. The largest number
of nearby systems have been found in the slowest proper motion bin, 0.6"/yr >
mu >= 0.4"/yr, indicating that there may be a large population of low proper
motion systems very near the Sun.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journa
Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor–Independent Toxicity of Weathered Crude Oil during Fish Development
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), derived largely from fossil fuels and their combustion, are pervasive contaminants in rivers, lakes, and nearshore marine habitats. Studies after the Exxon Valdez oil spill demonstrated that fish embryos exposed to low levels of PAHs in weathered crude oil develop a syndrome of edema and craniofacial and body axis defects. Although mechanisms leading to these defects are poorly understood, it is widely held that PAH toxicity is linked to aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) binding and cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) induction. Using zebrafish embryos, we show that the weathered crude oil syndrome is distinct from the well-characterized AhR-dependent effects of dioxin toxicity. Blockade of AhR pathway components with antisense morpholino oligonucleotides demonstrated that the key developmental defects induced by weathered crude oil exposure are mediated by low-molecular-weight tricyclic PAHs through AhR-independent disruption of cardiovascular function and morphogenesis. These findings have multiple implications for the assessment of PAH impacts on coastal habitats
The Solar Neighborhood XVII: Parallax Results from the CTIOPI 0.9m Program -- Twenty New Members of the RECONS 10 Parsec Sample
Astrometric measurements for 25 red dwarf systems are presented, including
the first definitive trigonometric parallaxes for 20 systems within 10 pc of
the Sun, the horizon of the RECONS sample. The three nearest systems that had
no previous trigonometric parallaxes (other than perhaps rough preliminary
efforts) are SO 0253+1652 (3.84 +/- 0.04 pc, the 23rd nearest system), SCR
1845-6357 AB (3.85 +/- 0.02 pc, 24th), and LHS 1723 (5.32 +/- 0.04 pc, 56th).
In total, seven of the systems reported here rank among the nearest 100 stellar
systems. Supporting photometric and spectroscopic observations have been made
to provide full characterization of the systems, including complete VRIJHK
photometry and spectral types. A study of the variability of 27 targets reveals
six obvious variable stars, including GJ 1207, for which we observed a flare
event in the V band that caused it to brighten by 1.7 mag.
Improved parallaxes for GJ 54 AB and GJ 1061, both important members of the
10 pc sample, are also reported. Definitive parallaxes for GJ 1001 A, GJ 633,
and GJ 2130 ABC, all of which have been reported to be within 10 pc, indicate
that they are beyond 10 pc. From the analysis of systems with (previously) high
trigonometric parallax errors, we conclude that parallaxes with errors in
excess of 10 mas are insufficiently reliable for inclusion in the RECONS
sample. The cumulative total of new additions to the 10 pc sample since 2000 is
now 34 systems -- 28 by the RECONS team and six by other groups. This total
represents a net increase of 16% in the number of stellar systems reliably
known to be nearer than 10 pc.Comment: 33 pages, including 3 figures and 3 table
