An NMR-based nanostructure switch for quantum logic
We propose a nanostructure switch based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)
which offers reliable quantum gate operation, an essential ingredient for
building a quantum computer. The nuclear resonance is controlled by the magic
number transitions of a few-electron quantum dot in an external magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 2 separate PostScript figures. Minor changes included. One

The Higher Derivative Expansion of the Effective Action by the String-Inspired Method, Part I
The higher derivative expansion of the one-loop effective action for an
external scalar potential is calculated to order O(T**7), using the
string-inspired Bern-Kosower method in the first quantized path integral
formulation. Comparisons are made with standard heat kernel calculations and
with the corresponding Feynman diagrammatic calculation in order to show the
efficiency of the present method.Comment: 13 pages, Plain TEX, 1 figure may be obtained from the authors,

Capillary Condensation and Interface Structure of a Model Colloid-Polymer Mixture in a Porous Medium
We consider the Asakura-Oosawa model of hard sphere colloids and ideal
polymers in contact with a porous matrix modeled by immobilized configurations
of hard spheres. For this ternary mixture a fundamental measure density
functional theory is employed, where the matrix particles are quenched and the
colloids and polymers are annealed, i.e. allowed to equilibrate. We study
capillary condensation of the mixture in a tiny sample of matrix as well as
demixing and the fluid-fluid interface inside a bulk matrix. Density profiles
normal to the interface and surface tensions are calculated and compared to the
case without matrix. Two kinds of matrices are considered: (i) colloid-sized
matrix particles at low packing fractions and (ii) large matrix particles at
high packing fractions. These two cases show fundamentally different behavior
and should both be experimentally realizable. Furthermore, we argue that
capillary condensation of a colloidal suspension could be experimentally
accessible. We find that in case (ii), even at high packing fractions, the main
effect of the matrix is to exclude volume and, to high accuracy, the results
can be mapped onto those of the same system without matrix via a simple
rescaling.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PR
Fluorescently labeled bacteria provide insight on post-mortem microbial transmigration
AbstractMicrobially mediated mechanisms of human decomposition begin immediately after death, and are a driving force for the conversion of a once living organism to a resource of energy and nutrients. Little is known about post-mortem microbiology in cadavers, particularly the community structure of microflora residing within the cadaver and the dynamics of these communities during decomposition. Recent work suggests these bacterial communities undergo taxa turnover and shifts in community composition throughout the post-mortem interval. In this paper we describe how the microbiome of a living host changes and transmigrates within the body after death thus linking the microbiome of a living individual to post-mortem microbiome changes. These differences in the human post-mortem from the ante-mortem microbiome have demonstrated promise as evidence in death investigations. We investigated the post-mortem structure and function dynamics of Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens after intranasal inoculation in the animal model Mus musculus L. (mouse) to identify how transmigration of bacterial species can potentially aid in post-mortem interval estimations. S. aureus was tracked using in vivo and in vitro imaging to determine colonization routes associated with different physiological events of host decomposition, while C. perfringens was tracked using culture-based techniques. Samples were collected at discrete time intervals associated with various physiological events and host decomposition beginning at 1h and ending at 60 days post-mortem. Results suggest that S. aureus reaches its highest concentration at 5–7 days post-mortem then begins to rapidly decrease and is undetectable by culture on day 30. The ability to track these organisms as they move in to once considered sterile space may be useful for sampling during autopsy to aid in determining post-mortem interval range estimations, cause of death, and origins associated with the geographic location of human remains during death investigations
A thread calculus with molecular dynamics
We present a theory of threads, interleaving of threads, and interaction
between threads and services with features of molecular dynamics, a model of
computation that bears on computations in which dynamic data structures are
involved. Threads can interact with services of which the states consist of
structured data objects and computations take place by means of actions which
may change the structure of the data objects. The features introduced include
restriction of the scope of names used in threads to refer to data objects.
Because that feature makes it troublesome to provide a model based on
structural operational semantics and bisimulation, we construct a projective
limit model for the theory.Comment: 47 pages; examples and results added, phrasing improved, references

Two-Loop -Diagrams from String Theory
Using the {\em cutting and sewing} procedure we show how to get Feynman
diagrams, up to two-loop order, of -theory with an internal SU(N)
symmetry group, starting from tachyon amplitudes of the open bosonic string
theory. In a properly defined field theory limit, we easily identify the
corners of the string moduli space reproducing the correctly normalized field
theory amplitudes expressed in the Schwinger parametrization.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure
Photon Spectrum Produced by the Late Decay of a Cosmic Neutrino Background
We obtain the photon spectrum induced by a cosmic background of unstable
neutrinos. We study the spectrum in a variety of cosmological scenarios and
also we allow for the neutrinos having a momentum distribution (only a critical
matter dominated universe and neutrinos at rest have been considered until
now). Our results can be helpful when extracting bounds on neutrino electric
and magnetic moments from cosmic photon background observations.Comment: RevTex, 14 pages, 3 figures; minor changes, references added. To

Evidence for a three-nucleon-force effect in proton-deuteron elastic scattering
Developments in spin-polarized internal targets for storage rings have
permitted measurements of 197 MeV polarized protons scattering from vector
polarized deuterons. This work presents measurements of the polarization
observables A_y, iT_11, and C_y,y in proton-deuteron elastic scattering. When
compared to calculations with and without three-nucleon forces, the
measurements indicate that three-nucleon forces make a significant contribution
to the observables. This work indicates that three-body forces derived from
static nuclear properties appear to be crucial to the description of dynamical
properties.Comment: 8 pages 2 figures Latex, submitted to Phys. Rev. Letter
