A Nest for the Soul: The Trope of Solitude in Three Early Modern Discalced Carmelite Nun-Poets

For early modern Discalced Carmelite nun-poets, solitude remains tied to the paradoxical equation of life to death and death to life so famously parsed by St. Teresa. This essay examines poems by María de San Alberto (1568-1640), Ana de la Trinidad (1577-1613), and Gregoria Francisca de Santa Teresa (1653-1736) exploring the possibilities of creating and maintaining solitude while embarked on a quest for mystical union. Outstanding practitioners of the Teresian poetic tradition, the Founding Mother’s religious and literary example allowed them the freedom to communicate with their religious sisters and subsequent readers, and thereby establish religious community through writing. Eosinophilia in children with endemic Burkitt lymphoma in Malawi as a prognostic factor for survival

In dieser Arbeit wurde gezielt die Frage untersucht, ob Eosinophilie bei Diagnosestellung eines endemischen Burkitt Lymphoms in Malawi einen prognostisch positiven Faktor für das Überleben darstellt. In diese retrospektive Studie wurden 479 Patienten, zwischen 1997 und 2009 in Malawi behandelt, eingeschlossen. Mittels uni- und multivariater Analyse wurde versucht unabhängige Einflussvariablen auf das 1-Jahres Ereignis-freie Überleben zu erfassen. Das mediane Alter lag bei 7.0 Jahre (M:F Ratio 1.8:1, Stadium I 14.4%, II 22.3%, III 46.8%, IV 15.2%). Der mediane Eosinophilen-Wert betrug 0.10 x 10³/µl. 25.5% der Kinder präsentierten initial mit Eosinophilie. Innerhalb der 12 Monate erlitten 36.3% der Patienten ein Rezidiv oder Tod, 16.1% blieben Tumor-frei. Die multivariate Analyse ergab, dass Patienten mit Stadien III, IV ein signifikant erhöhtes Risiko für ein Ereignis haben (chi² 0.019, exp(B) 1.579). Eosinophilie hatte keinen signifikanten Einfluss auf das ereignisfreie Überleben.In this dissertation we analysed the hypothesis that eosinophilia in children with newly diagnosed endemic Burkitt lymphoma represents a positive prognostic factor for survival. In this retrospective study, data of 479 patients treated in Malawi from 1997 to 2009 was analysed. By means of uni- and multivariate statistical analyses we tried to identify independent variables influencing 1 year event free survival (1-EFS). Median age was 7.0 years (M:F ratio 1.8:1, Stage I 14.4%, II 22.3%, III 46.8%, IV 15.2%). Median eosinophilic count was 0.10 x 10³/µl. 25.5% of the patients presented initially with eosinophilia. Within the 12 months follow-up 36.6% of the children died or suffered relapse, 16.1% remaind in tumor-free status. Multivariate analysis showed patients with stage III,IV disease to have a significantly increased risk to suffer an event (chi² 0.019, exp(B) 1.579). Eosinophilia was not shown to correlate significantly with 1-EFS. Thus, our hypothesis was not proofed.<br

In Zusammenarbeit mit den Lehrkräften und SchülerInnen der SchlaU-Schule entstanden, bietet der erste Band aus der SchlaU-Materialreihe „Deutsch als Zweitsprache“ hochwertige und umfangreiche Lehr- und Lernmaterialien. Erfolgreiche Lern- und Schulerfahrungen der SchülerInnen stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt. Der vorliegende Band ist konzipiert für die Alphabetisierung von neuzugewanderten Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen, insbesondere mit Fluchterfahrung. Mit alltäglichen, lebensweltorientierten Bildern, Wörtern, Themen und Situationen lernen die SchülerInnen die deutsche Schrift und Sprache und erhalten so die Chance auf Teilhabe an Bildung und Gesellschaft

Observation of dissipative chlorophyll-to-carotenoid energy transfer in light-harvesting complex II in membrane nanodiscs

Abstract Plants prevent photodamage under high light by dissipating excess energy as heat. Conformational changes of the photosynthetic antenna complexes activate dissipation by leveraging the sensitivity of the photophysics to the protein structure. The mechanisms of dissipation remain debated, largely due to two challenges. First, because of the ultrafast timescales and large energy gaps involved, measurements lacked the temporal or spectral requirements. Second, experiments have been performed in detergent, which can induce non-native conformations, or in vivo, where contributions from homologous antenna complexes cannot be disentangled. Here, we overcome both challenges by applying ultrabroadband two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to the principal antenna complex, LHCII, in a near-native membrane. Our data provide evidence that the membrane enhances two dissipative pathways, one of which is a previously uncharacterized chlorophyll-to-carotenoid energy transfer. Our results highlight the sensitivity of the photophysics to local environment, which may control the balance between light harvesting and dissipation in vivo

Full characterization of vibrational coherence in a porphyrin chromophore by two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy

In this work we present experimental and calculated two-dimensional electronic spectra for a 5,15-bisalkynyl porphyrin chromophore. The lowest energy electronic Qy transition couples mainly to a single 380 cm–1 vibrational mode. The two-dimensional electronic spectra reveal diagonal and cross peaks which oscillate as a function of population time. We analyze both the amplitude and phase distribution of this main vibronic transition as a function of excitation and detection frequencies. Even though Feynman diagrams provide a good indication of where the amplitude of the oscillating components are located in the excitation-detection plane, other factors also affect this distribution. Specifically, the oscillation corresponding to each Feynman diagram is expected to have a phase that is a function of excitation and detection frequencies. Therefore, the overall phase of the experimentally observed oscillation will reflect this phase dependence. Another consequence is that the overall oscillation amplitude can show interference patterns resulting from overlapping contributions from neighboring Feynman diagrams. These observations are consistently reproduced through simulations based on third order perturbation theory coupled to a spectral density described by a Brownian oscillator model

Single-molecule spectroscopy of LHCSR1 protein dynamics identifies two distinct states responsible for multi-timescale photosynthetic photoprotection

In oxygenic photosynthesis, light harvesting is regulated to safely dissipate excess energy and prevent the formation of harmful photoproducts. Regulation is known to be necessary for fitness, but the molecular mechanisms are not understood. One challenge has been that ensemble experiments average over active and dissipative behaviours, preventing identification of distinct states. Here, we use single-molecule spectroscopy to uncover the photoprotective states and dynamics of the light-harvesting complex stress-related 1 (LHCSR1) protein, which is responsible for dissipation in green algae and moss. We discover the existence of two dissipative states. We find that one of these states is activated by pH and the other by carotenoid composition, and that distinct protein dynamics regulate these states. Together, these two states enable the organism to respond to two types of intermittency in solar intensity-step changes (clouds and shadows) and ramp changes (sunrise), respectively. Our findings reveal key control mechanisms underlying photoprotective dissipation, with implications for increasing biomass yields and developing robust solar energy devices
