    The Effects of Mindfulness Practices and Activities on Student Attention and Work Engagement in a Multi-age 4th to 6th grade Montessori Classroom

    The purpose of this research was to test whether the implementation of mindfulness exercises would increase focus and work engagement of students. This study incorporated breathing and visualization exercises three times a week. The 5-week study involved 44 children between the ages of 9 and 12 years in a private Montessori school in Northern Michigan. Data collection included daily tallies of on and off task behavior, daily observations of work engagement, pre and post questionnaires about mindfulness completed by each child, and oneon- one discussions with each participant. Results showed an increase in the number of students on task and more students engaged in work over time. The pre and post questionnaire showed an increase in the number of students who liked mindfulness exercises and thought they were helpful, but expressed mixed opinions related to statements regarding focus and distraction. Eighty-two percent of students responded that they found mindfulness exercises helpful. Thirtysix percent mentioned the words “focus” or “concentrate” in their descriptions of how the mindfulness exercises were helpful. Eighty percent responded that they would use the mindfulness techniques independently. The data showed a positive correlation between the implementation of mindfulness exercises and focus in children ages 9 to 12. Suggestions for further research include increasing conversations about ways students can practice mindfulness exercises independently and an extended research period

    Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), the western corn rootworm (WCR), is an immigrant from North America and one of the top ten global agricultural pest species. Within the last 15 years, WCR invaded Europe at 3 focal points, and has been steadily extending its domain soon threatening commercial maize production. After the first detection in Switzerland in 2000 near Lugano, careful observations by pheromone trap monitoring of this quarantine organism have been realized. Experiences with WCR whose populations dynamics are incompletely understood, have also been studied by installing a continuous maize field comparing population dynamics with rotated maize fields in the immediate surroundings. Our experiences with WCR populations in the Swiss territory are here briefly summarized: 1. Mandatory crop rotation in the canton Ticino slowed spread of WCR significantly. WCR infestations north of the main Alpine mountain chain were rare and eradicated by crop rotation. 2. In a continuous maize cropping system population of WCR can reach economic damage level, but can also be confined by unknown factors 3. Switzerland with its rigorous crop rotation program may serve as an example of farsighted WCR management preserving environment and saving money

    Protamine dosage effects on complement activation and sonoclot coagulation analysis after cardiac surgery

    Background: An optimal dosage and infusion regime for protamine reversal of heparin after cardiopulmonary bypass is important. Methods: Protamine dosages of either 2mg/kg or 4mg/kg bodyweight were compared in 40 patients after first time coronary arterial bypass grafting. Protamine was infused with a syringe driver over 20 minutes. Arterial blood sampling was performed prior to and during surgery, before and at 0.3, 0.6, 1, 3, 6 and 25h after the protamine infusion. C3a-desArg and C4a-desArg were analysed by radioimmunoassay. Coagulation was assayed with Sonoclot and activated clotting time. Results: Significantly higher inter-group plasma levels of C3a-desArg were seen with the greater protamine dose from 0.3- 0.6h, but none for C4a-desArg. Sonoclot parameters and leucocyte count differed significantly between the groups up to 6h, indicating hypercoagulabilty with the higher protamine dose. Significantly longer ACT in the low protamine dosage group indicited unblocked heparin with nonsignificant increased drainage bleeding and transfusions. There were no signs of allergic or anaphylactic reactions in any of the groups. Conclusion: Keeping the protamine dose low, minimizes complement activation with less viscoelastic signs of hypercoagulability. However there is an increased risk for drainage bleeding and unnecessary transfusion if heparin is not fully reversed with protamine post cardiopulmonary bypass.     The AmiC/NlpD Pathway Dominates Peptidoglycan Breakdown in Neisseria meningitidis and Affects Cell Separation, NOD1 Agonist Production, and Infection

    The human-restricted pathogen Neisseria meningitidis, which is best known for causing invasive meningococcal disease, has a nonpathogenic lifestyle as an asymptomatic colonizer of the human naso- and oropharyngeal space. N. meningitidis releases small peptidoglycan (PG) fragments during growth. It was demonstrated previously that N. meningitidis releases low levels of tripeptide PG monomer, which is an inflammatory molecule recognized by the human intracellular innate immune receptor NOD1. In this present study, we demonstrated that N. meningitidis released more PG-derived peptides compared to PG monomers. Using a reporter cell line overexpressing human NOD1, we showed that N. meningitidis activates NOD1 using PG-derived peptides. Generation of such peptides required the presence of the periplasmic N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanine amidase AmiC, and the outer membrane lipoprotein, NlpD. AmiC and NlpD were found to function in cell separation, and mutation of either amiC or nlpD resulted in large clumps of unseparated N. meningitidis cells instead of the characteristic diplococci. Using stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy, we demonstrated that FLAG epitope-tagged NlpD localized to the septum, while similarly-tagged AmiC was found at the septum in some diplococci but distributed around the cell in most cases. In a human whole blood infection assay, an nlpD mutant was severely attenuated and showed particular sensitivity to complement. Thus, in N. meningitidis the cell separation proteins AmiC and NlpD are necessary for NOD1 stimulation and for survival during infection of human blood

    Ischemic postconditioning protects remodeled myocardium via the PI3K-PKB/Akt reperfusion injury salvage kinase pathway

    OBJECTIVE: We tested whether ischemic postconditioning (IPostC) is protective in remodeled myocardium. METHODS: Post-myocardial infarct (MI)-remodeled hearts after permanent coronary artery ligation and one kidney one clip (1K1C) hypertensive hearts of male Wistar rats were exposed to 40 min of ischemia followed by 90 min of reperfusion. IPostC was induced by six cycles of 10 s reperfusion interspersed by 10 s of no-flow ischemia. Activation of reperfusion injury salvage kinases was measured using Western blotting and in vitro kinase activity assays. RESULTS: IPostC prevented myocardial damage in both MI-remodeled and 1K1C hearts, as measured by decreased infarct size and lactate dehydrogenase release, and improved function. The reduction in infarct size and the recovery of left ventricular contractility achieved by IPostC was less in 1K1C hearts, but was unchanged in MI-remodeled hearts when compared to healthy hearts. In contrast, the recovery of inotropy was unaffected in 1K1C hearts, but was less in MI-remodeled hearts. Inhibition of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway with LY294002 abolished the protective effects of IPostC on both disease models and healthy hearts. Western blot analysis in conjunction with in vitro kinase activity assays identified protein kinase B (PKB)/Akt but not p42/p44 extracellular-signal regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) as the predominant kinase in IPostC-mediated cardioprotection in remodeled hearts. IPostC increased phosphorylation of the PKB/Akt downstream targets eNOS, GSK3beta, and p70S6K in remodeled hearts. CONCLUSION: Our results offer evidence that IPostC mediates cardioprotection in the remodeled rat myocardium primarily via activation of the PI3K-PKB/Akt reperfusion injury salvage kinase pathwa
