Recent Trends and Impacts of Fisheries Exploitation on Mediterranean Stocks and Ecosystems
This review focuses on the recent data on Mediterranean fishing fleets and landings, results from stock assessments and ecosystem models to provide an overview of the multiple impacts of fishing exploitation in the different Mediterranean geographical sub-areas (GSAs). A fleet of about 73,000 vessels is widespread along the Mediterranean coasts. Artisanal activities are predominant in South Mediterranean and in the eastern basin, while trawling features GSAs in the western basin and the Adriatic Sea. The overall landings of fish, crustaceans and cephalopods, after peaking during mid 90s at about one million tons, declined at about 700,000 tons in 2013. However, while landings are declining in EU countries since the 90s, in non-EU countries a decreasing trend was observed only in the last 5â10 years. The current levels of fishing effort determine a general overexploitation status of commercial stocks with more than 90% of the stock assessed out of safe biological limits. Indicators obtained from available ecosystem models were used to assess the sustainability of the fisheries. They included primary production required to sustain fisheries (PPR), mean trophic level of the catch (mTLc), the loss in secondary production index (L index), and the probability of the ecosystem to be sustainably exploited (psust). In areas exploited more sustainably (e.g., Gulf of Gabes, Eastern Ionian, and Aegean Sea) fishing pressure was characterized by either low number of vessels per unit of shelf area or the large prevalence of artisanal/small scale fisheries. Conversely, GSAs in Western Mediterranean and Adriatic showed very low ecosystem sustainability of fisheries that can be easily related with the high fishing pressure and the large proportion of overfished stocks obtained from single species assessments. We showed that the current knowledge on Mediterranean fisheries and ecosystems describes a worrisome picture where the effect of poorly regulated fisheries, in combination with the ongoing climate forcing and the rapid expansion of non-indigenous species, are rapidly changing the structure and functioning of the ecosystem with unpredictable effects on the goods and services provided. Although this would call for urgent conservation actions, the management system implemented in the region appears too slow and probably inadequate to protect biodiversity and secure fisheries resources for the future generations
A Framework for the Analysis of the Sustainability of the Energy Retail Market
This paper addresses the issue of assessing the sustainability of policy decisions of the Energy Retail Market, explicitly considering the retail energy market, unlike existing approaches in the literature that analyze the energy market as a whole. The sustainability assessment is treated as the process by which the sustainability implications of an initiative are assessed, where the initiative can be a proposed or existing policy, plan, program, project, piece of legislation, or current practice or activity. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the literature on the sustainability of policy decisions in the retail energy sector and formulates a conceptual framework for policy sustainability analysis in the retail energy sector. The systematic review is complemented by a quantitative bibliometric analysis on the 48 collected papers published from 1997 to 2022. The proposed framework allows for a balanced analysis of the sustainability of policy decisions by evaluating the technical, economic, and environmental impacts. It could be used to develop a list of indicators that can map the different impacts and their interactions. Critical analysis of the existing findings leads us to identify future research directions
Time-resolved double-slit experiment with entangled photons
The double-slit experiment strikingly demonstrates the wave-particle duality
of quantum objects. In this famous experiment, particles pass one-by-one
through a pair of slits and are detected on a distant screen. A distinct
wave-like pattern emerges after many discrete particle impacts as if each
particle is passing through both slits and interfering with itself. While the
direct event-by-event buildup of this interference pattern has been observed
for massive particles such as electrons, neutrons, atoms and molecules, it has
not yet been measured for massless particles like photons. Here we present a
temporally- and spatially-resolved measurement of the double-slit interference
pattern using single photons. We send single photons through a birefringent
double-slit apparatus and use a linear array of single-photon detectors to
observe the developing interference pattern. The analysis of the buildup allows
us to compare quantum mechanics and the corpuscular model, which aims to
explain the mystery of single-particle interference. Finally, we send one
photon from an entangled pair through our double-slit setup and show the
dependence of the resulting interference pattern on the twin photon's measured
state. Our results provide new insight into the dynamics of the buildup process
in the double-slit experiment, and can be used as a valuable resource in
quantum information applications
Identifying priority areas for spatial management of mixed fisheries using ensemble of multiâspecies distribution models
Spatial fisheries management is widely used to reduce overfishing, rebuild stocks, and protect biodiversity. However, the effectiveness and optimization of spatial measures depend on accurately identifying ecologically meaningful areas, which can be difficult in mixed fisheries. To apply a method generally to a range of target species, we devel- oped an ensemble of species distribution models (e-SDM) that combines general ad- ditive models, generalized linear mixed models, random forest, and gradient-boosting machine methods in a training and testing protocol. The e-SDM was used to integrate density indices from two scientific bottom trawl surveys with the geopositional data, relevant oceanographic variables from the three-dimensional physical-biogeochemi- cal operational model, and fishing effort from the vessel monitoring system. The de- termined best distributions for juveniles and adults are used to determine hot spots of aggregation based on single or multiple target species. We applied e-SDM to juvenile and adult stages of 10 marine demersal species representing 60% of the total demer- sal landings in the central areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Using the e-SDM results, hot spots of aggregation and grounds potentially more selective were identified for each species and for the target species group of otter trawl and beam trawl fisheries. The results confirm the ecological appropriateness of existing fishery restriction areas and support the identification of locations for new spatial management measures

Detection limits of significant prostate cancer using multiparametric MR and digital rectal examination in men with low serum PSA: Up-date of the Italian Society of Integrated Diagnostic in Urology.
Reasons why significant prostate cancer is still missed in early stage were investigated at the 22nd National SIEUN (Italian Society of integrated diagnostic in Urology, Andrology, Nephrology) congress took place from 30th November to 1st December 2020, in virtual modality. Even if multiparametric magnetic resonance (MR) has been introduced in the clinical practice several, limitations are emerging in patient with regular digital rectal examination (DRE) and serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels approaching the normal limits. The present paper summarizes highlights observed in those cases where significant prostate cancer may be missed by PSA or imaging and DRE. The issue of multidisciplinary interest had been subdivided and deepened under four main topics: biochemical, clinical, pathological and radiological point of view with a focus on PI-RADS 3 lesions
Robot-assisted segmental ureterectomy with psoas hitch ureteral reimplantation: Oncological, functional and perioperative outcomes of case series of a single centre.
Introduction: According to the Urology guidelines, in selected cases of distal upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) segmental ureterectomy (SU) can be offered. There is no consensus in the surgical technique of preference. Robot-assisted SU could be an option to overcome all the limitations of open and laparoscopic techniques. We describe our first experience of robot assisted SU with psoas hitch ureteral reimplantation (RAPHUR). Materials and methods: 11 patients underwent RAPHUR for distal UTUC between 2013 and 2017 in a single centre. Pre-, intra-, and postoperative outcomes were assessed. Conventional imaging was performed after 1, 3, 6 months and 1 year from surgery as follow up protocol. We retrospectively evaluated the technical feasibility, oncological and functional outcomes. Results: Median age was 71 years (57-91). The median length of the ureteral defect was 23 mm (10-40). Median preoperative creatinine level was 1.22 mg/dl (0.7-1.85) and median eGFR was 57.5 ml/min/1.73m2 (31-80). Five (45.5%) patients were symptomatic and 7 (63.6%) had hydronephrosis. Median operative time was 185 min (120-240), with a median blood loss of 100 ml (50-300). No case required conversion to open surgery. Overall, only 1 (9%) patient developed Clavien Dindo â„ 3 postoperative complications. Average hospital stay was 7 (2-9) days. Mean postoperative creatinine was 1.05 mg/dl (0.8-1.85) and mean postoperative eGFR was 72 (36-83). During a median follow up time of 25.5 months (12-53), 4 (36.4%) patients experienced recurrence of urothelial cancer at conventional imaging follow up and 2 (18.2%) died due to its progression. Conclusions: In our initial experience RAPHUR can be proposed to selected cases of distal ureteral carcinoma with optimal perioperative and functional outcomes. However, cancer control may be undermined compared to nephroureterectomy. Thus, further prospective studies are needed to confirm our findings
Complications and outcomes of tubeless versus nephrostomy tube in percutaneous nephrolithotomy: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials
We aimed to perform a systematic review of randomized trials to summarize the evidence on the safety and stone-free rate after Tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) (ureteral stent/catheter, no nephrostomy) compared to Standard PCNL (nephrostomy, with/without ureteral stent/catheter) to evaluate if the tubeless approach is better. The inverse variance of the mean difference with a random effect, 95% Confidence Interval (CI), and p values was used for continuous variables. Categorical variables were assessed using Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel method with the random effect model, and reported as Risk Ratio (RR), 95% CI, and p values. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05 and a 95% CI. 26 studies were included. Mean operative time was significantly shorter in the Tubeless group (MD-5.18 min, 95% CI - 6.56, - 3.80, p < 0.00001). Mean postoperative length of stay was also significantly shorter in the Tubeless group (MD-1.10 day, 95% CI - 1.48, - 0.71, p < 0.00001). Incidence of blood transfusion, angioembolization for bleeding control, pain score at the first postoperative day, the number of patients requiring postoperative pain medication, fever, urinary infections, sepsis, perirenal fluid collection, pleural breach, hospital readmission, and SFR did not differ between the two groups. Incidence of postoperative urinary fistula was significantly lower in the Tubeless group (RR 0.18, 95% CI 0.07, 0.47, p = 0.0005). This systematic review shows that tubeless PCNL can be safely performed and the standout benefits are shorter operative time and hospital stay, and a lower rate of postoperative urinary fistula.Universita Politecnica delle Marche within the CRUI-CARE Agreemen
Observation of associated near-side and away-side long-range correlations in âsNN=5.02ââTeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Two-particle correlations in relative azimuthal angle (ÎÏ) and pseudorapidity (Îη) are measured in âsNN=5.02ââTeV p+Pb collisions using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using approximately 1ââÎŒb-1 of data as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and the transverse energy (ÎŁETPb) summed over 3.1<η<4.9 in the direction of the Pb beam. The correlation function, constructed from charged particles, exhibits a long-range (2<|Îη|<5) ânear-sideâ (ÎÏâŒ0) correlation that grows rapidly with increasing ÎŁETPb. A long-range âaway-sideâ (ÎÏâŒÏ) correlation, obtained by subtracting the expected contributions from recoiling dijets and other sources estimated using events with small ÎŁETPb, is found to match the near-side correlation in magnitude, shape (in Îη and ÎÏ) and ÎŁETPb dependence. The resultant ÎÏ correlation is approximately symmetric about Ï/2, and is consistent with a dominant cosâĄ2ÎÏ modulation for all ÎŁETPb ranges and particle pT
