Ultrastable CO2 Laser Trapping of Lithium Fermions
We demonstrate an ultrastable CO2 laser trap that provides tight confinement
of neutral atoms with negligible optical scattering and minimal laser-noise-
induced heating. Using this method, fermionic 6Li atoms are stored in a 0.4 mK
deep well with a 1/e trap lifetime of 300 sec, consistent with a background
pressure of 10^(-11) Torr. To our knowledge, this is the longest storage time
ever achieved with an all-optical trap, comparable to the best reported
magnetic traps.Comment: 4 pages using REVTeX, 1 eps figur
State-Insensitive Cooling and Trapping of Single Atoms in an Optical Cavity
Single Cesium atoms are cooled and trapped inside a small optical cavity by
way of a novel far-off-resonance dipole-force trap (FORT), with observed
lifetimes of 2 to 3 seconds. Trapped atoms are observed continuously via
transmission of a strongly coupled probe beam, with individual events lasting ~
1 s. The loss of successive atoms from the trap N = 3 -> 2 -> 1 -> 0 is thereby
monitored in real time. Trapping, cooling, and interactions with strong
coupling are enabled by the FORT potential, for which the center-of-mass motion
is only weakly dependent on the atom's internal state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures Revised version to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
SuPP & MaPP: Adaptable Structure-Based Representations For Mir Tasks
Accurate and flexible representations of music data are paramount to addressing MIR tasks, yet many of the existing approaches are difficult to interpret or rigid in nature. This work introduces two new song representations for structure-based retrieval methods: Surface Pattern Preservation (SuPP), a continuous song representation, and Matrix Pattern Preservation (MaPP), SuPP’s discrete counterpart. These representations come equipped with several user-defined parameters so that they are adaptable for a range of MIR tasks. Experimental results show MaPP as successful in addressing the cover song task on a set of Mazurka scores, with a mean precision of 0.965 and recall of 0.776. SuPP and MaPP also show promise in other MIR applications, such as novel-segment detection and genre classification, the latter of which demonstrates their suitability as inputs for machine learning problems
Performance of a deterministic source of entangled photonic qubits
We study the possible limitations and sources of decoherence in the scheme
for the deterministic generation of polarization-entangled photons, recently
proposed by Gheri et al. [K. M. Gheri et al., Phys. Rev. A 58, R2627 (1998)],
based on an appropriately driven single atom trapped within an optical cavity.
We consider in particular the effects of laser intensity fluctuations, photon
losses, and atomic motion.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Very long storage times and evaporative cooling of cesium atoms in a quasi-electrostatic dipole trap
We have trapped cesium atoms over many minutes in the focus of a CO-laser
beam employing an extremely simple laser system. Collisional properties of the
unpolarized atoms in their electronic ground state are investigated. Inelastic
binary collisions changing the hyperfine state lead to trap loss which is
quantitatively analyzed. Elastic collisions result in evaporative cooling of
the trapped gas from 25 K to 10 K over a time scale of about 150 s.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Q-Value for the Fermi Beta-Decay of 46V
By comparing the Q-values for the 46Ti(3He,t)46V and 47Ti(3He,t)47}V
reactions to the isobaric analog states the Q-value for the superallowed
Fermi-decay of 46V has been determined as Q_{EC}(46V)=(7052.11+/-0.27) keV. The
result is compatible with the values from two recent direct mass measurements
but is at variance with the previously most precise reaction Q-value. As
additional input quantity we have determined the neutron separation energy
S_n(47Ti)=(8880.51+/-0.25) keV
Contact Interactions and Resonance-Like Physics at Present and Future Colliders from Unparticles
High scale conformal physics can lead to unusual unparticle stuff at our low
energies. In this paper we discuss how the exchange of unparticles between
Standard Model fields can lead to new contact interaction physics as well as a
pseudoresonance-like structure, an unresonance, that might be observable at the
Tevatron or LHC in, e.g., the Drell-Yan channel. The specific signatures of
this scenario are quite unique and can be used to easily identify this new
physics given sufficient integrated luminosity.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figs; minor text changes, ref added; typos correcte
A white-light trap for Bose-Einstein condensates
We propose a novel method for trapping Bose-condensed atoms using a
white-light interference fringe. Confinement frequencies of tens of kHz can be
achieved in conjunction with trap depths of only a few micro-K. We estimate
that lifetimes on the order of 10 s can be achieved for small numbers of atoms.
The tight confinement and shallow depth permit tunneling processes to be used
for studying interaction effects and for applications in quantum information.Comment: 10 pages with 3 figure
Optimizing end-labeled free-solution electrophoresis by increasing the hydrodynamic friction of the drag-tag
We study the electrophoretic separation of polyelectrolytes of varying
lengths by means of end-labeled free-solution electrophoresis (ELFSE). A
coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation model, using full electrostatic
interactions and a mesoscopic Lattice Boltzmann fluid to account for
hydrodynamic interactions, is used to characterize the drag coefficients of
different label types: linear and branched polymeric labels, as well as
transiently bound micelles.
It is specifically shown that the label's drag coefficient is determined by
its hydrodynamic size, and that the drag per label monomer is largest for
linear labels. However, the addition of side chains to a linear label offers
the possibility to increase the hydrodynamic size, and therefore the label
efficiency, without having to increase the linear length of the label, thereby
simplifying synthesis. The third class of labels investigated, transiently
bound micelles, seems very promising for the usage in ELFSE, as they provide a
significant higher hydrodynamic drag than the other label types.
The results are compared to theoretical predictions, and we investigate how
the efficiency of the ELFSE method can be improved by using smartly designed
drag-tags.Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Macromolecule
