    ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISATION OF BLOCK-IN-MATRIX ROCKS

    Οι σχηματισμοι block-in-matrix (ή «bimrocks») είναι πολύμικτοι και ετερογενείς γεωλογικοί σχηματισμοί που αποτελούνται από ανθεκτικά μπλοκ ενσωματωμένα σε ένα ασθενέστερο συνδετικό υλικό. Οι δυσκολίες που συναντώνται κατά τη δειγματοληψία και την εκτέλεση εργαστηριακών δοκιμών τους δημιουργεί σημαντικές προκλήσεις κατά το γεωτεχνικό σχεδιασμό και την αξιολόγηση της συμπεριφοράς τους. Μια προσέγγιση για τον χαρακτηρισμό αυτών των γεωυλικών είναι η χρήση της στερεολογικής ανάλυσης που οδηγεί στην εκτίμηση της ογκομετρική αναλογία των μπλοκ σε σχέση με το συνδετικό υλικό. Η παρούσα εργασία παρουσιάζει τις παραμέτρους που θεωρούνται σημαντικές για τον τεχνικο γεωλογικό χαρακτηρισμό των σχηματισμών αυτών και παρουσιάζονται σύντομα αποτελέσματα από δύο θέσεις «bimrock» στην ΒΔ Ελλάδα.Block-in-matrix rocks (“bimrocks”) are complex, mixed and heterogeneous formations of competent blocks embedded in weaker matrix. The inherent difficulty of sampling and consequently, laboratory testing of bimrocks leads to considerable challenging in geotechnical design and assessment of their engineering behaviour. An approach for the characterisation of “bimrocks” is the use of stereological analysis that extrapolates one-dimensional or two dimensional data to estimate the block volumetric proportion. This has been an established approach of dealing with bimrocks and melanges for the last two decades. This paper presents the parameters that are considered important for the engineering characterisation of such complex formations, while a case study from a bimrock in NW Greece is discussed

    Influence of heterogeneity on rock strength and stiffness using discrete element method and parallel bond model

    The particulate discrete element method (DEM) can be employed to capture the response of rock, provided that appropriate bonding models are used to cement the particles to each other. Simulations of laboratory tests are important to establish the extent to which those models can capture realistic rock behaviors. Hitherto the focus in such comparison studies has either been on homogeneous specimens or use of two-dimensional (2D) models. In situ rock formations are often heterogeneous, thus exploring the ability of this type of models to capture heterogeneous material behavior is important to facilitate their use in design analysis. In situ stress states are basically three-dimensional (3D), and therefore it is important to develop 3D models for this purpose. This paper revisits an earlier experimental study on heterogeneous specimens, of which the relative proportions of weaker material (siltstone) and stronger, harder material (sandstone) were varied in a controlled manner. Using a 3D DEM model with the parallel bond model, virtual heterogeneous specimens were created. The overall responses in terms of variations in strength and stiffness with different percentages of weaker material (siltstone) were shown to agree with the experimental observations. There was also a good qualitative agreement in the failure patterns observed in the experiments and the simulations, suggesting that the DEM data enabled analysis of the initiation of localizations and micro fractures in the specimens

    Analysis of local seismic response in the historical city centre of Nafplio (Greece)

    Local seismic response analysis represents a fundamental tool for assessing the seismic risk of urban areas and Cultural Heritage (CH) sites, nevertheless several open questions remain when complex geological contexts are considered. This study has been carried out in the framework of the research project STABLE (H2020 RISE-Marie Curie Action) which has the aim of evaluating the seismic action on CH sites in the Mediterranean basin. One of them being the city of Nafplio (Greece), a site characterised by a peculiar geological setting and a medium-high regional seismic hazard. Geological and geophysical data have been collected to reconstruct both the subsoil model and the seismotectonic conditions. Several seismic ambient noise measurements were carried out to establish the site resonance frequency and to validate engineering-geological cross-sections for numerical modelling of the seismic wave propagation. Combined engineering-geological, geophysical and numerical modelling allowed evaluating the local seismic response of the urban area of Nafplio, providing a zonation map with homogeneous seismic response zones for which elastic response spectra will be obtained

    Instrumentation is often used to monitor the performance of engineered infrastructure slopes. This paper looks at the current role of instrumentation and monitoring, including the reasons for monitoring infrastructure slopes, the instrumentation typically installed and parameters measured. The paper then investigates recent developments in technology and considers how these may change the way that monitoring is used in the future, and tries to summarize the barriers and challenges to greater use of instrumentation in slope engineering. The challenges relate to economics of instrumentation within a wider risk management system, a better understanding of the way in which slopes perform and/or lose performance, and the complexities of managing and making decisions from greater quantities of data

    Prevalence of HPV infection among Greek women attending a gynecological outpatient clinic

    Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a causative factor for cervical cancer. Early detection of high risk HPV types might help to identify women at high risk of cervical cancer. The aim of the present study was to examine the HPV prevalence and distribution in cervical smears in a sample of Greek women attending a gynecological outpatient clinic and to explore the determinants of the infection.Methods: A total of 225 women were studied. All women underwent a regular gynecological control. 35 HPV types were studied; 6, 11, 16, 18, 26, 31, 33, 35, 39, 40, 42, 43, 44, 45, 51, 52, 53, 54, 56, 58, 59, 61, 62, 66, 68, 70, 71, 72, 73, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85 and 89. Also, basic demographic information, sociodemographic characteristics and sexual behavior were recorded.Results: HPV was detected in 22.7% of the study population. The percentage of the newly diagnosed women with HPV infection was 17.3%. HPV-16 was the most common type detected (5.3%) followed by HPV-53 (4.9%). 66.2% of the study participants had a Pap test during the last year without any abnormalities. HPV infection was related positively with alcohol consumption (OR: 2.19, 95% CI: 1.04-4.63, P = 0.04) and number of sexual partners (OR: 2.16, 95% CI: 1.44-3.25, P < 0.001), and negatively with age (OR: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.87-0.99, P = 0.03), and monthly income (OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.44-0.89, P = 0.01).Conclusion: The prevalence of HPV in women attending an outpatient clinic is high. Number of sexual partners and alcohol consumption were the most significant risk factors for HPV infection, followed by young age and lower income

    Hypericum sp.: essential oil composition and biological activities

    Phytochemical composition of Hypericum genus has been investigated for many years. In the recent past, studies on the essential oils (EO) of this genus have been progressing and many of them have reported interesting biological activities. Variations in the EO composition of Hypericum species influenced by seasonal variation, geographic distribution, phenological cycle and type of the organ in which EO are produced and/or accumulated have also been reported. Although many reviews attributed to the characterization as well as biological activities of H. perforatum crude extracts have been published, no review has been published on the EO composition and biological activities of Hypericum species until recently (Crockett in Nat Prod Commun 5(9):1493–1506, 2010; Bertoli et al. in Global Sci Books 5:29–47, 2011). In this article, we summarize and update information regarding the composition and biological activities of Hypericum species EO.
