It also finds that lenders covered by CRA are much less likely to make higher-cost loans in communities of color than lenders not covered by CRA

    The angle of attack: rapping technique predicts skill in hermit crab contests

    Skill, the ability to perform a challenging behaviour well, has been shown to be an important determinant of success in a variety of contexts, including human sports, animal courtship and, most recently, animal contests. Because skilful movement requires precise motor control, skill is assumed to be underpinned by traits that determine these abilities. However, while these traits determine an individual's potential to perform effective movements (known as technique), this potential may not translate into skilful fighting due to interference from the opponent. Here, we investigated the relationship between technique and skill using the European hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus. By examining the spatial distribution of shell raps, we found that, on average, technique exhibited during a ‘training’ fight predicted the level of skill displayed in a real contest. However, our results also demonstrated substantial among-individual variation in the direction of change across the two fights, with some individuals exhibiting better technique than skill and others showing the opposite pattern. Finally, we found that winners, but not losers, progressively adapted their targeting of strikes when faced with a fully functional opponent. Our results indicate that skill is a combination of innate technique and the ability to adapt to an opponent's behaviour

    Splitting of Long-Period Comet C/2018 F4 (PANSTARRS)

    Long-period comet C/2018 F4 (PANSTARRS) was observed to show duplicity of its inner region in 2020 September, suggestive of a splitting event. We here present analyses of our observations of the comet taken from the LOOK project and the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope after the discovery of the splitting. The two fragments Components A and B, estimated to be âˆŒâ€‰âŁ60\sim\!60 m to 4 km in radius, remained highly similar to each other in terms of brightness, colour, and dust morphology throughout our observing campaign from 2020 September to 2021 December. Our fragmentation model yielded that the two components split at a relative speed of 3.00±0.183.00 \pm 0.18 m s−1^{-1} in 2020 late April, implying a specific energy change of (5.3±2.8)×103\left(5.3 \pm 2.8 \right) \times 10^3 J kg−1^{-1}, and that Component B was subjected to a stronger nongravitational acceleration than Component A in both the radial and normal directions of the orbit. The obtained splitting time is broadly consistent with the result from the dust morphology analysis, which further suggested that the dominant dust grains were millimeter-sized and ejected at speed âˆŒâ€‰âŁ2\sim\!2 m s−1^{-1}. We postulate that the pre-split nucleus of the comet consisted of two lobes resembling the one of 67P, or that the comet used to be a binary system like main-belt comet 288P. Regardless, we highlight the possibility of using observations of split comets as a feasible manner to study the bilobate shape or binarity fraction of cometary nuclei.Comment: Accepted to AJ for publicatio

    Case report: Resolution of oligo-anuric acute kidney injury with furosemide administration in a cat following lily toxicity

    ObjectiveTo describe the successful outcome of a case of oligo-anuric acute kidney injury in a cat secondary to lily ingestion.Case summaryA 12-week-old intact male domestic short-hair cat weighing 1.64 kg (3.6 lb) presented with a 12-h duration of vomiting and lethargy after exposure to lilies of the genera Lilium species 24 h prior to presentation. Severe azotemia (Creatinine 5.8 mg/dL, BUN > 100 mg/dL) and hyperkalemia (9.36 mmol/L) were noted on the day of presentation. Treatment of hyperkalemia was instituted with calcium gluconate, lactated ringers solution, dextrose, regular short-acting insulin, albuterol, and sodium bicarbonate, Oliguria to anuria was highly suspected based on a lack of urine production 21 h after hospitalization with intravenous fluid administration and a static bladder size. The cat was administered 4 mg/kg of furosemide, and urinated at 6 h following administration and continued to produce over 6 ml/kg/h of urine in the next 24 h. Two days following furosemide administration, the cat's hyperkalemia and azotemia resolved. The cat was discharged after 4 days of hospitalization, and a recheck revealed no persistent azotemia or hyperkalemia.Unique informationAnuric acute kidney injury secondary to lily toxicity is associated with a poor prognosis, and the only treatment modality previously described is hemodialysis. The cat in this report was successfully managed with medical intervention and furosemide administration, with complete resolution of the acute kidney injury

    Bringing together emerging and endemic zoonoses surveillance: shared challenges and a common solution

    Early detection of disease outbreaks in human and animal populations is crucial to the effective surveillance of emerging infectious diseases. However, there are marked geographical disparities in capacity for early detection of outbreaks, which limit the effectiveness of global surveillance strategies. Linking surveillance approaches for emerging and neglected endemic zoonoses, with a renewed focus on existing disease problems in developing countries, has the potential to overcome several limitations and to achieve additional health benefits. Poor reporting is a major constraint to the surveillance of both emerging and endemic zoonoses, and several important barriers to reporting can be identified: (i) a lack of tangible benefits when reports are made; (ii) a lack of capacity to enforce regulations; (iii) poor communication among communities, institutions and sectors; and (iv) complexities of the international regulatory environment. Redirecting surveillance efforts to focus on endemic zoonoses in developing countries offers a pragmatic approach that overcomes some of these barriers and provides support in regions where surveillance capacity is currently weakest. In addition, this approach addresses immediate health and development problems, and provides an equitable and sustainable mechanism for building the culture of surveillance and the core capacities that are needed for all zoonotic pathogens, including emerging disease threats

    Use of high-plex data reveals novel insights into the tumour microenvironment of clear cell renal cell carcinoma

    This work was supported by Medical Research Scotland (MRS), NHS Lothian, NanoStringTechnologies, and the Industrial Centre for AI Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD) which is funded by Innovate UK on behalf of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) [project number: 104690].Although Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICIs) have significantly improved the oncological outcomes, about one third of patients affected by Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) still experience recurrence. Current prognostic algorithms like the Leibovich Score (LS) rely on morphological features manually assessed by pathologists, and are therefore subject to bias. Moreover, these tools do not consider the heterogeneous molecular milieu present in the Tumour Microenvironment (TME), which may have prognostic value. We systematically developed a semi-automated method to investigate 62 markers and their combinations in 150 primary ccRCCs using multiplex Immunofluorescence (mIF), NanoString GeoMxÂź Digital Spatial Profiling (DSP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted image analysis in order to find novel prognostic signatures and investigate their spatial relationship. We found that coexpression of Cancer Stem Cell (CSC) and Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) markers such as OCT4 and ZEB1 are indicative of poor outcome. OCT4 and the immune markers CD8, CD34 and CD163 significantly stratified patients at intermediate LS. Furthermore, augmenting the LS with OCT4 and CD34 improved patient stratification by outcome. Our results support the hypothesis that combining molecular markers has prognostic value and can be integrated with morphological features to improve risk stratification and personalised therapy. To conclude, GeoMxÂź DSP and AI image analysis are complementary tools providing high multiplexing capability required to investigate the TME of ccRCC, while reducing observer bias.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Is there a difference in physical activity levels in patients before and up to one year after unilateral total hip replacement? A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objective: To determine if there is a difference in physical activity levels before and up to one year after unilateral primary total hip replacement. Data sources: A search was performed on 13th July 2016. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they presented pre-operative and up to one year post-operative measures of physical activity for patients who had undergone unilateral primary total hip replacement. Review methods: Any paper that used a measure of physical activity pre and up to one year post unilateral primary total hip replacement. Data was synthesised using a meta-analysis with 95% confidence intervals (CI), if appropriate. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme cohort study checklist was used to assess the quality of evidence. Results: From 6024 citations, nine studies were analysed in a meta-analysis and eight studies were analysed qualitatively. The quality of the evidence was ‘low’ to ‘moderate’. There was no statistically significant difference in physical activity pre- to post-total hip replacement when assessed using: movement-related activity (mean difference (MD): -0.08; 95% CI: 1.60, 1.44; I2=0%; n=77), percentage of 24-hours spent walking (MD: -0.21; 95% CI: -1.36, 0.93; I2=12%; n=65), six-minute walk test (MD: -60.85; 95% CI: -122.41, 0.72; I2=84%; n=113) or the cardiopulmonary exercise test (MD: -0.24; 95% CI: -1.36, 0.87; I2=0%;n=76). Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference in physical activity levels before and up to one year after unilateral primary total hip replacement. However the low to moderate methodological quality of the included papers should be taken into consideration when drawing conclusions

    Working at the intersection of research and practice: the love to read project

    There is growing interest in the use of research-practice partnerships in education, in an attempt to narrow the widely recognized gap between educational research and practice. However, there is a tendency for partnership research to be weighted towards first-person accounts and the majority of literature comes from the US. This article describes the process of researcher-teacher collaboration to co-design an educational program, and teachers’ evaluation of this process, set within the context of a longer-term research-practice partnership in the UK. This paper discusses the benefits, challenges and methodological considerations associated with research-practice partnerships. Implications for future research-practice partnerships are highlighted, as are lessons learnt for those interested in working collaboratively and productively at the intersection of research and practice
