O material foi sinterizado em linha, área e volume utilizando uma distância entre linhas de varrimento constante (0.30mm), três velocidades de varrimento do laser (50, 150, 250mm/s) e duas potências de laser (154 and 180W). O aço rápido M3/2 foi utilizado tal qual e com diferentes adições de uma fracção fina do mesmo material de modo a aumentar a densidade aparente

    Metallurgical evaluation of laser sintered M3/2 HSS powder

    Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is one of the leading commercial rapid tooling (RT) technologies that produce 3D fully functional parts and tools directly from a CAD model. High Speed Steels (HSS) have the desired combination of hot hardness, wear resistance and toughness needed for applications such as cutting tools, special tools, inserts and dies that can be successfully developed in a near net shape by DMLS. This paper presents a study of DMLS of commercial water atomized M3/2 powder with different apparent densities. The effect of apparent density and DMLS process parameters on the surface morphologies and microstructure of laser sintered M3/2 powder was analysed and the optimum processing conditions to reduce balling effect were identified. Laser sintered M3/2 HSS with energy densities between 2.4 and 12 J/mm2 produced a coarse roughness (Rz) ranging from 135 to 234μm. The lowest roughness (65μm) was obtained with 36J/mm2, the highest laser energy density value used. The microstructure of laser sintered M3/2 HSS consisted of austenite, martensite and a fine carbide structure

    Photon trajectories in incoherent atomic radiation trapping as Levy flights

    Photon trajectories in incoherent radiation trapping for Doppler, Lorentz, and Voigt line shapes under complete frequency redistribution are shown to be Levy flights. The jump length (r) distributions display characteristic long tails. For the Lorentz line shape, the asymptotic form is a strict power law r ^ (-3/2), while for Doppler the asymptotic is r ^ -2 (ln r)^ (-1/2). For the Voigt profile, the asymptotic form always has a Lorentz character, but the trajectory is a self-affine fractal with two characteristic Hausdorff scaling exponents

    Sustainable waste recycling solution for the glass fibre reinforced polymer composite materials industry

    In this paper the adequacy and the benefit of incorporating glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) waste materials into polyester based mortars, as sand aggregates and filler replacements, are assessed. Different weight contents of mechanically recycled GFRP wastes with two particle size grades are included in the formulation of new materials. In all formulations, a polyester resin matrix was modified with a silane coupling agent in order to improve binder-aggregates interfaces. The added value of the recycling solution was assessed by means of both flexural and compressive strengths of GFRP admixed mortars with regard to those of the unmodified polymer mortars. Planning of experiments and data treatment were performed by means of full factorial design and through appropriate statistical tools based on analyses of variance (ANOVA). Results show that the partial replacement of sand aggregates by either type of GFRP recyclates improves the mechanical performance of resultant polymer mortars. In the case of trial formulations modified with the coarser waste mix, the best results are achieved with 8% waste weight content, while for fine waste based polymer mortars, 4% in weight of waste content leads to the higher increases on mechanical strengths. This study clearly identifies a promising waste management solution for GFRP waste materials by developing a cost-effective end-use application for the recyclates, thus contributing to a more sustainable fibre-reinforced polymer composites industry

    Impact of Redshift Information on Cosmological Applications with Next-Generation Radio Surveys

    In this paper, we explore how the forthcoming generation of large-scale radio continuum surveys, with the inclusion of some degree of redshift information, can constrain cosmological parameters. By cross-matching these radio surveys with shallow optical to near-infrared surveys, we can essentially separate the source distribution into a low- and a high-redshift sample, thus providing a constraint on the evolution of cosmological parameters such as those related to dark energy. We examine two radio surveys, the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) and the Westerbork Observations of the Deep APERTIF Northern sky (WODAN). A crucial advantage is their combined potential to provide a deep, full-sky survey. The surveys used for the cross-identifications are SkyMapper and SDSS, for the southern and northern skies, respectively. We concentrate on the galaxy clustering angular power spectrum as our benchmark observable, and find that the possibility of including such low redshift information yields major improvements in the determination of cosmological parameters. With this approach, and provided a good knowledge of the galaxy bias evolution, we are able to put strict constraints on the dark energy parameters, i.e. w_0=-0.9+/-0.041 and w_a=-0.24+/-0.13, with type Ia supernovae and CMB priors (with a one-parameter bias in this case); this corresponds to a Figure of Merit (FoM) > 600, which is twice better than what is obtained by using only the cross-identified sources and greater than four time better than the case without any redshift information at all.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in MNRA

    New CP-violating parameters in cascade decays

    We consider decay chains of the type P -> M + ... -> f + ..., where M is a neutral meson that may mix with its antiparticle Mbar, before decaying into the final state f. P may be either a heavier neutral meson or a charged meson. We perform a rephasing-invariant analysis of the quantities that show up in such cascade decays. If the decay P -> M + ... (or the decay P -> Mbar + ...) is forbidden, we find the usual lambda_f parameters describing the interference between the mixing of a neutral meson system and the decay from that system into the final state f. However, when both the P -> M + ... and P -> Mbar + ... decays are allowed, we find a new class of rephasing-invariant parameters, xi_i, that measure the interference between the mixing of a neutral meson system and the decay from the initial state *into that system*. We show that the quantities lambda_f and xi_i are necessary and sufficient to describe all the interference effects present in the most general cascade decay.     Determination of the antimutagenicity of an aqueous extract of Rhizophora mangle L. (Rhizophoraceae), using in vivo and in vitro test systems

    An aqueous extract of Rhizophora mangle L. bark is used as raw material in pottery making in the State of Espirito Santo, Brazil. This extract presents large quantities of tannins, compounds possessing antioxidant properties. Tannin antioxidant activity, as a plant chemical defense mechanism in the process of stabilizing free radicals, has been an incentive to studies on anti-mutagenicity. The present work aimed to evaluate possible antimutagenic activity of a R. mangle aqueous extract, using the Allium cepa test-system and micronuclear (MN) assay with blockage of cytokinesis in Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO-K1). The Allium cepa test-system indicated antimutagenic activity against the damage induced by the mutagenic agent methyl methanesulfonate. A reduction in both MN cell frequency and chromosome breaks occurred in both the pre and post-treatment protocols. The MN testing of CHO-K1 cells revealed anti-mutagenic activity of the R. mangle extract against methyl methanesulfonate and doxorubicin in pre, simultaneous and post-treatment protocols. These results suggest the presence of phyto-constituents in the extract presenting demutagenic and bio-antimutagenic activities. Since the chemical constitution of Rhizophora mangle species presents elevated tannin content, it is highly probable that these compounds are the antimutagenic promoters themselves

    Bologna process, higher education and a few considerations about the New University

    O presente artigo analisa o que se convencionou chamar de Processo de Bolonha, isto é, a produção de uma “política pública de um meta-Estado para um meta-campo universitário”, constituindo-se em uma política educacional supranacional, comum aos estados-membros da União Européia, com vista à construção de um “espaço europeu de educação superior”. O processo político e de reformas institucionais, realizado por cada governo nacional, conduzirá ao estabelecimento efetivo do novo sistema europeu de educação superior até 2010, incluindo atualmente 45 países – todos os da UE e outros 18 países europeus não pertencentes a ela. Nesse sentido, por se tratar de um vastíssimo número de “subsistemas nacionais” e de instituições educativas, atribui-se um grande protagonismo às questões relativas à “garantia de qualidade”. Analisam-se, igualmente, as recentes transformações na educação superior no Brasil, em que o projeto da chamada “Universidade Nova” e o Programa de Apoio a Planos de Reestruturação e Expansão das Universidades Federais (REUNI) constituem-se nas manifestações mais claras do reordenamento desse nível de ensino (seguindo os parâmetros de Bolonha), que já experimentara grandes transformações nos governos de Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002) e teve prosseguimento nos governos de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2006; 2007), embora com distintos matizes.This article analyzes what is conventionally known as the Bologna Process, or the making of a “public policy of a meta-State for a University meta-field” that corresponds to a supranational educational policy for all the European Union membership States, with the goal of building a “European higher education space.” The political process and the institutional reforms of each national government intends to establish the new European higher education system until 2010, with 45 countries – the number reflects current developments, including the EU membership States and 18 non-EU countries. Given the high quantity and the myriads of “national subsystems” and educational institutions involved, “quality assurance” becomes a major task in this process. We analyze, in the same way, the recent higher education changes in Brazil, where the so-called “New University” project and the Program of Support for the Restructuring and Expansion of Brazilian Federal Universities (REUNI, in Portuguese) are the clearest expressions of the reshaping of the higher education system (in accordance with the Bologna standards) after the dramatic changes made by Fernando Henrique Cardoso´s government (1995-2002) and continued by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva´s government (2003-2006; 2007), despite some differences between both administrations

    Revisiting the Red Giant Branch Hosts KOI-3886 and ι Draconis.:Detailed Asteroseismic Modeling and Consolidated Stellar Parameters

    Asteroseismology is playing an increasingly important role in the characterization of red giant host stars and their planetary systems. Here, we conduct detailed asteroseismic modeling of the evolved red giant branch (RGB) hosts KOI-3886 and ι Draconis, making use of end-of-mission Kepler (KOI-3886) and multisector TESS (ι Draconis) time-series photometry. We also model the benchmark star KIC 8410637, a member of an eclipsing binary, thus providing a direct test to the seismic determination. We test the impact of adopting different sets of observed modes as seismic constraints. Inclusion of .,"= 1 and 2 modes improves the precision of the stellar parameters, albeit marginally, compared to adopting radial modes alone, with 1.9%-3.0% (radius), 5%-9% (mass), and 19%-25% (age) reached when using all p-dominated modes as constraints. Given the very small spacing of adjacent dipole mixed modes in evolved RGB stars, the sparse set of observed g-dominated modes is not able to provide extra constraints, further leading to highly multimodal posteriors. Access to multiyear time-series photometry does not improve matters, with detailed modeling of evolved RGB stars based on (lower-resolution) TESS data sets attaining a precision commensurate with that based on end-of-mission Kepler data. Furthermore, we test the impact of varying the atmospheric boundary condition in our stellar models. We find the mass and radius estimates to be insensitive to the description of the near-surface layers, at the expense of substantially changing both the near-surface structure of the best-fitting models and the values of associated parameters like the initial helium abundance, Y i . Attempts to measure Y i from seismic modeling of red giants may thus be systematically dependent on the choice of atmospheric physics
