    Laboulbeniales on Semiaquatic Heteroptera. A New Species of Triceromyces (Ascomycota, Laboulbeniales) on Microvelia (Heteroptera, Veliidae) from Spain

    A new species of fungal genus Triceromyces (Laboulbeniales) is described: Triceromyces benjaminii. The description is based on several thalli found on the insect host Microvelia pygmaea (Heteroptera, Veliidae), collected in two localities from SE Spain. Characteristics of male and female thalli of this dioecious species are discussed and compared with other dioecious taxa. The characteristics of male thalli require some adjustment in generic limits. This is the first species of Triceromyces known to parasitize a species of Microvelia, a semiaquatic heteropteran genus. The new species is described and illustrated with line drawings and photographs. A table collates information on synonymy, hosts, geographical distribution, and salient references pertinent to taxa of Laboulbeniales parasitic on semiaquatic Heteroptera

    Se citan, por primera vez para la Península Ibérica, cuatro especies de Trichomycetes pertenecientes al orden Harpellales: Harpellomyces eccentricus Lichtw. & S.T. Moss en larvas de Thaumalea (Díptera, Thaumaleidae), Smittium culisetae Lichtw. en larvas de mosquito (Díptera, Culicidae), Smittium chironomi Manier y Stachylina nana Lichtw. en larvas de quironómido (Diptera, Chironomidae).     Solar radiation distribution inside a monospan greenhouse with the roof entirely covered by photovoltaic panels

    In the present work the variation over space and time of the amount of the photosynthetic photons flux density, inside a greenhouse entirely covered with photovoltaic panels was investigated experimentally and numerically. The greenhouse had 10.00 m spam width, 50.00 m length, 3.00 m height of the gutter, 6.60 m height of the edge. Data were acquired in the period 18th April-8th June 2014 by one sensor outside and one inside the experimental greenhouse built in Southern Italy. Numeric simulations were performed by means of commercial software Autodesk® Ecotect®. For the investigated greenhouse model, the exposed percentage the ratio of the calculated insolation at a particular point within an enclosure to the simultaneous unobstructed outdoor insolation under the same sky conditions-was calculated over a three dimensional grid formed by 50×10 ×15 cells each with 1.00×1.00×0.20 m size. The long-term analysis demonstrated a good capability of the numerical model to predict the shading effect inside a photovoltaic greenhouse combining the daily calculated exposed percentage with measurements of solar radiation. The model was able also to predict the qualitative behaviour of the variation of photons flux during the day even if the measured values showed a higher fluctuation of values

    Endo-orbital osteoma: Two case reports

    Osteoma is a benign, slow-growing tumor, which mainly occurs in the bones and cavities of the middle third of the face, representing the most frequent benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses. Osteoma of the paranasal sinuses is generally asymptomatic and it is discovered only as a coincidental radiological finding; when it becomes symptomatic, the most common presenting symptoms are headaches and facial pain. Rarely the sinusal osteoma may entail secondary orbital extension, with ocular signs and symptoms. Primary intraorbital involvement is extremely rare. The authors present a review of the literature and report two cases of primary orbital osteoma. In both cases surgical treatment led to the complete remission of symptoms. Diagnosis and surgical therapy are discussed

    Smooth golden fleece and prickly golden fleece as potential new vegetables for the ready-to-eat production chain

    Smooth golden fleece (Urospermum dalechampii (L.) F.W. Schmidt) and prickly golden fleece (Urospermum picroides (L.) Scop. ex F.W. Schmid) are two wild edible plants used in traditional cuisine and folk medicine. In this research, the domestication of both species was tested for the first time using a floating system and two plant densities (412 and 824 plants m−2) to evaluate yield and quality. Some quality traits were also compared in cultivated plants and wild ones gathered in grasslands. The results show that both species are suitable for cultivation, although prickly golden fleece showed highest total phenols (132 mg 100 g−1 fresh weight—f.w.) and total antioxidant activity (0.19 mg 100 g−1 f.w.). At low sowing density, smooth golden fleece showed a nitrate content of about 7200 mg kg−1 f.w., 38% higher than plants of the same species grown at high density and plants of prickly golden fleece. These results suggest that high density can be used to optimize yield in two harvests. By permitting modulation of nutrients and a product without soil residues, the floating system used in this study proved suitable for growing U. dalechhampii and U. picroides as new vegetables for the ready-to-eat production chain

    This paper analyses different options that can be used to solve the problem of the planning of power distribution networks by including capacitive compensation and distributed generation. The methodology for planning aims to determine the size of the units, the bus where the units have to be located, and the year in which investments should be made, in order to minimize the total energy losses on the network during the planning period. The work analyses four different cases: planning using neither capacitive compensation (SC) nor distributed generation (DG), planning using only SC, planning using only DG, and planning using reactive compensation and distributed generation simultaneously. Results show that simultaneous use of SC and DG reduce the total energy losses and improve the voltage profiles on the network, so good results for the planning are obtained.Este artículo analiza diferentes opciones para realizar planeamiento de redes eléctricas de distribución en zonas con gran densidad de población a través del uso de generación distribuida y compensación capacitiva. La metodología de planificación permite determinar el tamaño de la unidad a instalar, el nodo en que debe ser ubicada y el año en que se debe hacer la inversión, con el fin de minimizar las pérdidas de energía durante el periodo de planificación. El estudio evalúa cuatro casos que son: planificación sin compensación capacitiva (SC) y sin  generación distribuida (DG),  planificación usando SC, planificación usando DG, y planificación usando los dos elementos simultáneamente. Los resultados muestran que el uso simultáneo de SC y DG disminuye las pérdidas totales de energía y mejora los perfiles de tensión en los nodos de la red, con  lo cual se obtienen muy buenos resultados en el planeamiento

    This review focuses key advances in different pediatric fields that were published in Italian Journal of Pediatrics and in international journals in 2015. Weaning studies continue to show promise for preventing food allergy. New diagnostic tools are available for identifying the allergic origin of allergic-like symptoms. Advances have been reported in obesity, short stature and autoimmune endocrine disorders. New molecules are offered to reduce weight gain and insulin-resistance in obese children. Regional investigations may provide suggestions for preventing short stature. Epidemiological studies have evidenced the high incidence of Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis in patients with Down syndrome. Documentation of novel risk factors for celiac disease are of use to develop strategies for prevention in the population at-risk. Diagnostic criteria for non-celiac gluten sensitivity have been reported. Negative effect on nervous system development of the supernumerary X chromosome in Klinefelter syndrome has emerged. Improvements have been made in understanding rare diseases such as Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. Eltrombopag is an effective therapy for immune trombocytopenia. Children with sickle-cell anemia are at risk for nocturnal enuresis. Invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus pyogenes are still common despite of vaccination. No difference in frequency of antibiotic prescriptions for acute otitis media between before the publication of the national guideline and after has been found. The importance of timing of iron administration in low birth weight infants, the effect of probiotics for preventing necrotising enterocolitis and perspectives for managing jaundice and cholestasis in neonates have been highlighted. New strategies have been developed to reduce the risk for relapse in nephrotic syndrome including prednisolone during upper respiratory infection. Insights into the pathophysiology of cerebral palsy, arterial ischemic stroke and acute encephalitis may drive advances in treatment. Recommendations on breastfeeding and complementary feeding have been updated. Novel treatments for rhabdomyosarcoma should be considered for paediatric patients. Control of risk factors for bronchiolitis and administration of pavilizumab for preventing respiratory syncytial virus infection may reduce hospitalization. Identification of risk factors for hospitalization in children with wheezing can improve the management of this disease. Deletions or mutations in genes encoding proteins for surfactant function may cause diffuse lung disease

    Abstract This review reports main progresses in various pediatric issues published in Italian Journal of Pediatrics and in international journals in 2016. New insights in clinical features or complications of several disorders may be useful for our better understanding. They comprise severe asthma, changing features of lupus erythematosus from birth to adolescence, celiac disease, functional gastrointestinal disorders, Moebius syndrome, recurrent pneumonia. Risk factors for congenital heart defects, Kawasaki disease have been widely investigated. New diagnostic tools are available for ascertaining brucellosis, celiac disease and viral infections. The usefulness of aCGH as first-tier test is confirmed in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders. Novel information have been provided on the safety of milk for infants. Recent advances in the treatment of common disorders, including neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, hypo-glycemia in newborns, atopic dermatitis, constipation, cyclic vomiting syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, regurgitation, short stature, secretions in children with cerebral palsy have been reported. Antipyretics treatment has been updated by national guidelines and studies have excluded side effects (e.g. asthma risk during acetaminophen therapy). Vaccinations are a painful event and several options are reported to prevent this pain. Adverse effects due to metabolic abnormalities are reported for second generation antipsychotic drugs
