Results on life cycle assessments to determine impacts of agronomic management choices in the Cauca and Honduras CSV
The intense management of the crops, that characterizes current agricultural cropping systems, has resulted in increased concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O).
In this study, we used the field-scale agricultural assessment model - Cool Farm Tool (CFT), to model GHG emissions and uptake estimates (Hillier et al., 2011). This tool combines different algorithms that integrate climate, soil and crop data and presents outputs on carbon footprints in a format that is accessible to non-experts. Furthermore, the CFT provides the possibility to compare GHG emissions and uptake estimates from different production sites and systems. Finally, the tool CFT enables crop producers and stakeholders to take a more informed and holistic approach to environmental sustainability in the agricultural sector
Paying it Forward: Training doulas as a form of reintegration and support for communities of color
As part of the birth justice movement in Alameda County, Roots of Labor Birth Collective (RLBC) is committed to support, empower and care for birthing members of the community. RLBC works to empower people of color with education and tools to have healthy babies and positive birth experiences regardless of their: gender, size, sexuality, orientation, culture or family structure. Healthy families begin with healthy communities and with that in mind, RLBC decided to tackle two major public health issues at once: recidivism and poor birth outcomes in communities of color. Doula training is not just an intervention to improve birth outcomes but also an opportunity for those who have been previously incarcerated to create a career by giving back to the community.
Even with evidence-based research supporting doula care as an intervention to improve birth outcomes in low-income communities, it is still seen as a luxury. RLBC believes that doula care and any care related to birth is a need and a right everyone should have.
Throughout my fieldwork I have completed: grant writing, key informant interviews and budgeting to help RLBC become a sustainable organization. The entire collective administration team has been working in-kind to make sure that the collective continues to provide free doula care regardless of their funding status. It is their hard work and dedication that has inspired those I have reached out to, to provide their professional services to help in any way that they can to help launch the Doula Community Fund campaign. With this marketing strategy, RLBC aims to gain clients who can pay full market value for a doula so that they can use part of the income to pay an RLBC doula to gift a birth to the community
The Use of Arguments A Fortiori in Decision Making
Some decisions involve the use of a variety forms of arguments in order to balance different alternatives before getting a choice which is expected to be the better to solve the problem at issue. By doing this, there are some cases where people are able to or urge moving towards the choice that is most advantageous, probable or acceptable, and at other times towards a choice that is less negative or adverse than the others. Both alternatives depict different ways of searching for the stronger reason at stake. This means that the a fortiori argument is being used as a deliberative tool to reach a choice in a decision making process. I assume that such usage helps to show how the use of arguments a fortiori can be a very effective movement for designing an argumentation strategy to gain unbiased decisions, agreements or outcomes. However, it is the case that some biased uses may arise as well. For example, by appeal to one authority or status as a means to impose an idea or force a particular decision. This has a direct effect on objectivity and impartiality in decision making. In this paper I will present an analysis on how a fortiori arguments work either in personal or group processes of decision making, and when they are being used in biased or unbiased ways. This will provide some clues for a better understanding about the pragmatic conditions for applying correctly this kind of argument
Advances in mapping ice-free surfaces within the Northern Antarctic peninsula region using polarimetric RADARSAT-2 data
Ice-free areas within the Northern Antarctic Peninsula
region are of interest for studying changes occurring to
surface covers, including those related to glacial coverage,
raised beach deposits and periglacial processes and
permafrost. The objective of this work is to map the main
surface covers within ice-free areas of King George Island,
the largest island of the South Shetlands archipelago, using
fully polarimetric RADARSAT-2 SAR data.
Surface covers such as rock outcrops and glacial till, stone
fields, patterned ground, and sand and gravel deposits form
the most representative classes and account for 84 km2 of
the ice-free areas on the island. A distribution of complex
geomorphological features and landforms was obtained,
being some of them considered indicators of periglacial
processes and presence of permafrost.Published versio
