Gain Modulation by Corticostriatal and Thalamostriatal Input Signals during Reward-Conditioned Behavior.
The cortex and thalamus send excitatory projections to the striatum, but little is known about how these inputs, either individually or collectively, regulate striatal dynamics during behavior. The lateral striatum receives overlapping input from the secondary motor cortex (M2), an area involved in licking, and the parafascicular thalamic nucleus (PF). Using neural recordings, together with optogenetic terminal inhibition, we examine the contribution of M2 and PF projections on medium spiny projection neuron (MSN) activity as mice performed an anticipatory licking task. Each input has a similar contribution to striatal activity. By comparing how suppressing single or multiple projections altered striatal activity, we find that cortical and thalamic input signals modulate MSN gain and that this effect is more pronounced in a temporally specific period of the task following the cue presentation. These results demonstrate that cortical and thalamic inputs synergistically regulate striatal output during reward-conditioned behavior
High resolution infrared spectra of bulge globular clusters: Liller~1 and NGC 6553
Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, we have obtained echelle spectra
covering the range 1.5-1.8um for 2 of the brightest giants in Liller 1 and NGC
6553, old metal rich globular clusters in the Galactic bulge. We use spectrum
synthesis for the abundance analysis, and find [Fe/H]=-0.3 +/- 0.2 and
[O/H]=+0.3 +/- 0.2 dex. The composition of the clusters is similar to that of
field stars in the bulge and is consistent with a sceanrio in which the
clusters formed early, with rapid enrichment. We have dificulty achieveing a
good fit to the spectrum of NGC 6553 using either the low or the high values
recently reported in the literature, unless unusually large, or no
alpha-element enhancements are adopted, respectively.Comment: To appear in the Astronomical Journal, March 200

Process and apparatus for analyzing specimens for the presence of microorganisms therein
Microorganisms in a specimen are detected, identified, and enumerated by introducing the specimen into a sampling cartridge and diluting the specimen with a known volume of water within the cartridge. The cartridge has a manifold and several cassettes attached to the manifold. Each cassette contains a serpentine flow channel having a series of filters therein and a detection cell located downstream from each filter. The flow channel in each cassette also contains a culture medium which is freeze dried and is highly selective in the sense that it promotes the growth of one type of microorganism, but not others. The mixture of the specimen and water flows from the manifold into the flow channel of each cassette where it rehydrates the culture medium therein and further flows through the filters. Each filter removes a known proportion of the microorganisms from the mixture of specimen, water and medium, thereby effecting a serial dilution. After the cassettes are heated to incubate the microoganisms, the detection cells are observed for growth of the microorganisms therein which is manifested in a change in the light transmitting characteristics of the mixtures within the cells
AEGIS: New Evidence Linking Active Galactic Nuclei to the Quenching of Star Formation
Utilizing Chandra X-ray observations in the All-wavelength Extended Groth
Strip International Survey (AEGIS) we identify 241 X-ray selected Active
Galactic Nuclei (AGNs, L > 10^{42} ergs/s) and study the properties of their
host galaxies in the range 0.4 < z < 1.4. By making use of infrared photometry
from Palomar Observatory and BRI imaging from the Canada-France-Hawaii
Telescope, we estimate AGN host galaxy stellar masses and show that both
stellar mass and photometric redshift estimates (where necessary) are robust to
the possible contamination from AGNs in our X-ray selected sample. Accounting
for the photometric and X-ray sensitivity limits of the survey, we construct
the stellar mass function of X-ray selected AGN host galaxies and find that
their abundance decreases by a factor of ~2 since z~1, but remains roughly flat
as a function of stellar mass. We compare the abundance of AGN hosts to the
rate of star formation quenching observed in the total galaxy population. If
the timescale for X-ray detectable AGN activity is roughly 0.5-1 Gyr--as
suggested by black hole demographics and recent simulations--then we deduce
that the inferred AGN "trigger" rate matches the star formation quenching rate,
suggesting a link between these phenomena. However, given the large range of
nuclear accretion rates we infer for the most massive and red hosts, X-ray
selected AGNs may not be directly responsible for quenching star formation.Comment: 12 pages. Submitted to ApJ. Comments welcom
Gene content evolution in the arthropods
Arthropods comprise the largest and most diverse phylum on Earth and play vital roles in nearly every ecosystem. Their diversity stems in part from variations on a conserved body plan, resulting from and recorded in adaptive changes in the genome. Dissection of the genomic record of sequence change enables broad questions regarding genome evolution to be addressed, even across hyper-diverse taxa within arthropods. Using 76 whole genome sequences representing 21 orders spanning more than 500 million years of arthropod evolution, we document changes in gene and protein domain content and provide temporal and phylogenetic context for interpreting these innovations. We identify many novel gene families that arose early in the evolution of arthropods and during the diversification of insects into modern orders. We reveal unexpected variation in patterns of DNA methylation across arthropods and examples of gene family and protein domain evolution coincident with the appearance of notable phenotypic and physiological adaptations such as flight, metamorphosis, sociality, and chemoperception. These analyses demonstrate how large-scale comparative genomics can provide broad new insights into the genotype to phenotype map and generate testable hypotheses about the evolution of animal diversity
CANDELS/GOODS-S, CDFS, ECDFS: Photometric Redshifts For Normal and for X-Ray-Detected Galaxies
We present photometric redshifts and associated probability distributions for
all detected sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). The work
makes use of the most up-to-date data from the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep
Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and the Taiwan ECDFS Near-Infrared Survey (TENIS) in
addition to other data. We also revisit multi-wavelength counterparts for
published X-ray sources from the 4Ms-CDFS and 250ks-ECDFS surveys, finding
reliable counterparts for 1207 out of 1259 sources (). Data used for
photometric redshifts include intermediate-band photometry deblended using the
TFIT method, which is used for the first time in this work. Photometric
redshifts for X-ray source counterparts are based on a new library of
AGN/galaxy hybrid templates appropriate for the faint X-ray population in the
CDFS. Photometric redshift accuracy for normal galaxies is 0.010 and for X-ray
sources is 0.014, and outlier fractions are and respectively. The
results within the CANDELS coverage area are even better as demonstrated both
by spectroscopic comparison and by galaxy-pair statistics. Intermediate-band
photometry, even if shallow, is valuable when combined with deep broad-band

Morphological and conductivity studies of di-ureasil xerogels containing lithium triflate
Sol–gel derived poly(oxyethylene)/siloxane hybrids doped with lithium triflate, LiCF3SO3, have been investigated. The host hybrid matrix of these materials, named di-ureasil and represented by U(600), is composed by a siliceous framework to which polyether chains containing 8.5 oxyethylene repeat units are covalently bonded through urea linkages. Xerogel samples U(600)nLiCF3SO3 with n (where n is the molar ratio of oxyethylene moieties per Li+ ion) between ∞ and 0.1 have been examined. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry have provided conclusive evidence that the xerogels analyzed are entirely amorphous. The salt-rich material with n=1 exhibits the highest conductivity over the whole range of temperature analyzed (e.g. 4.3×10−6 and 2.0×10−4 Ω−1 cm−1, respectively, at 25 and 94 °C).Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
