    The Enthusiast’s Eye: The Value of Unsanctioned Knowledge in Design Historical Scholarship

    If design history research relies solely on institutionalized documentation and academic scholarship – that is, sanctioned knowledge – not only will its purview be limited to a very narrow segment of design culture, it will also lose out on a vast array of sources to valuable knowledge about our material environment produced by amateurs, collectors, and enthusiasts – what we in this article define as “unsanctioned knowledge.” Because of its dissociation with professional institutions and academic protocols and their – albeit admittedly utopian, but nonetheless upheld – ideals of objectivity, this type of knowledge is typically considered fundamentally subjective in nature and therefore of little or no relevance and value to academic scholarship. In this article, we argue that, to the contrary, design historical scholarship has much to gain from engaging more seriously with the unsanctioned knowledge represented by the enthusiast's eye

    Existen distintos mecanismos para proteger los recursos naturales a través de iniciativas empresariales. Uno de ellos corresponde al establecimiento de áreas de conservación con o sin reconocimiento del Estado, en los que en algunos casos, además de la preservación, también se desarrollan prácticas productivas y extractivistas que permitan un aprovechamiento sostenible de los recursos naturales. De acuerdo con lo dispuesto en la legislación ambiental, el análisis de información especializada publicada, literatura gris, así como de información obtenida a través diversas entrevistas, debates guiados y encuestas anónimas con actores clave del sector empresarial y público encargado de las áreas protegidas del país, identificamos los principales desafíos, motivos, beneficios y amenazas que encuentran las empresas para la inversión de recursos en la protección de la biodiversidad, puntualmente mediante el establecimiento de áreas de conservación. Por otra parte y a partir del anterior análisis, presentamos una ruta de trabajo o árbol de decisión con los mecanismos y estrategias, que le permiten a cualquier empresario realizar inversiones voluntarias u obligatorias para la protección de los recursos naturales. Finalmente, proponemos algunas consideraciones para diferenciar el registro voluntario de un área de conservación de inciativa empresarial. Esperando que con esta información, el sector empresarial asuma un rol proactivo e innovador, para que reconozca en la protección de los recursos naturales, en especial mediante el registro de áreas naturales protegidas, uno de los pilares de sus estrategias y políticas de sostenibilidad; acciones que sin duda fortalecerán el SINAP de uno de los países con mayor diversidad biológica del planeta.Bogotá, Colombi

    The global contribution of soil mosses to ecosystem services

    Soil mosses are among the most widely distributed organisms on land. Experiments and observations suggest that they contribute to terrestrial soil biodiversity and function, yet their ecological contribution to soil has never been assessed globally under natural conditions. Here we conducted the most comprehensive global standardized field study to quantify how soil mosses influence 8 ecosystem services associated with 24 soil biodiversity and functional attributes across wide environmental gradients from all continents. We found that soil mosses are associated with greater carbon sequestration, pool sizes for key nutrients and organic matter decomposition rates but a lower proportion of soil-borne plant pathogens than unvegetated soils. Mosses are especially important for supporting multiple ecosystem services where vascular-plant cover is low. Globally, soil mosses potentially support 6.43 Gt more carbon in the soil layer than do bare soils. The amount of soil carbon associated with mosses is up to six times the annual global carbon emissions from any altered land use globally. The largest positive contribution of mosses to soils occurs under a high cover of mat and turf mosses, in less-productive ecosystems and on sandy and salty soils. Our results highlight the contribution of mosses to soil life and functions and the need to conserve these important organisms to support healthy soils.The study work associated with this paper was funded by a Large Research Grant from the British Ecological Society (no.     Management control systems in innovation companies: A literature based framework

    Past research has traditionally argued that management control systems (MCSs) may present a hindrance to the creativity of innovation companies. This theoretical paper surveys the literature to focus an investigation on the MCSs of innovation companies. Within the object of control paradigm the paper develops and presents a theoretical model of the impact of eleven external, organisational and innovation related contingency factors on the MCSs in companies that engage in innovation activities. We also suggest measures for further empirical research. By formulating hypotheses on 43 potential interactions the model predicts contradictory influences on two direct control categories, results and action control, but stresses the importance of two indirect categories, personnel and cultural control. More specifically, the high levels of technological complexity and innovation capability in this type of company are expected to be negatively associated with the application of results and action control, whereas personnel and cultural seem to be more appropriate. Furthermore, important sources of finance, venture capital and public funding, are both hypothesised to be positively associated with the application of results, action and personnel control; whereas only public funding is predicted to be positively related to the application of cultural control. The principal contribution of this paper lies in synthesising the literature to provide a model of the impact of a unique set of eleven contingency factors for innovation companies on a broad scope of controls. In addition, the contingency model, if empirically validated, would add value by inferring the particular forms of management control which would be beneficial in innovative company settings. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

    Towards the design of 3D multiscale instructive tissue engineering constructs: Current approaches and trends

    The design of 3D constructs with adequate properties to instruct and guide cells both in vitro and in vivo is one of the major focuses of tissue engineering. Successful tissue regeneration depends on the favorable crosstalk between the supporting structure, the cells and the host tissue so that a balanced matrix production and degradation is achieved. Herein, the major occurring events and players in normal and regenerative tissue are overviewed. These have been inspiring the selection or synthesis of instructive cues to include into the 3D constructs. We further highlight the importance of a multiscale perception of the range of features that can be included on the biomimetic structures. Lastly, we focus on the current and developing tissue-engineering approaches for the preparation of such 3D constructs: top-down, bottom-up and integrative. Bottom-up and integrative approaches present a higher potential for the design of tissue engineering devices with multiscale features and higher biochemichal control than top-down strategies, and are the main focus of this review.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council grant agreement ERC-2012-ADG-20120216-321266 for the project ComplexiTE.
