    Automated DNA Motif Discovery

    Ensembl's human non-coding and protein coding genes are used to automatically find DNA pattern motifs. The Backus-Naur form (BNF) grammar for regular expressions (RE) is used by genetic programming to ensure the generated strings are legal. The evolved motif suggests the presence of Thymine followed by one or more Adenines etc. early in transcripts indicate a non-protein coding gene.     Monopoles, strings and dark matter

    We develop a scenario whereby monopoles in a hidden sector yield a decaying dark matter candidate of interest for the PAMELA and FERMI e±e^\pm excesses. The monopoles are not completely hidden due to a very small kinetic mixing and a hidden photon mass. The latter also causes the monopoles and anti-monopoles to be connected by strings. The resulting long-lived objects eventually decay to hidden photons which tend to escape galactic cores before decaying. The mass scales are those of the hidden photon (≈500\approx 500 MeV), the monopole (≈3\approx 3 TeV) and the mixing scale (close to the Planck scale). A gauge coupling in the hidden sector is the only other parameter. This coupling must be strong and this results in light point-like monopoles and light thin strings.Comment: 21 pages, various improvements and additional reference

    Prediction of force coefficients for labyrinth seals

    The development of a linear model for the prediction of labyrinth seal forces and on its comparison to available stiffness data is presented. A discussion of the relevance of fluid damping forces and the preliminary stages of a program to obtain data on these forces are examined. Fluid-dynamic forces arising from nonuniform pressure patterns in labyrinth seal glands are known to be potentially destablizing in high power turbomachinery. A well documented case in point is that of the space Shuttle Main Engine turbopumps. Seal forces are also an important factor for the stability of shrouded turbines, acting in that case in conjunction with the effects of blade-tip clearance variations

    Tourism's Impact on Long-Run Mexican Economic Growth

    Tourism is one of the most important factors in the productivity of Mexican economy with significant multiplier effects on economic activity. This paper investigates possible causal relationships among tourism expenditure, real exchange rate and economic growth by using quarterly data. Johansen cointegration analysis shows the existence of one cointegrated vector among real GDP, tourism expenditure and real exchange rate where the corresponding elasticities are positive. The tourism-led growth hypothesis is confirmed through cointegration and causality testing. Tourism expenditure and Real Exchange Rate (RER) are weakly exogenous to real GDP. A modified version of the Granger Causality test shows that causality goes unidirectionally from tourism expenditure and RER to real GDP. Impulse response analysis shows that a shock in tourism expenditure produces a short fall and then a positive effect on growth.economic growth Johansen cointegration test Granger causality tourism-led growth hypothesis.

Therefore, planning research draws upon each of these fields in how it interprets an examines the natural and built environment as elements of human settlement activities. As a small professional and academic discipline incorporating aspects of design, policy, law, social sciences, and engineering, it is understandable that research outcomes are published in a broad range of academic outlets. It is useful for us to reflect on our research intentions, processes, and outcomes, which is also referred to as ‘research about research,’ with a focus on the scholarly products of urban planning academics. We can do this by examining our methodologies, subdomains, application of research to practice, research impact, and bibliometrics. The purpose of reflecting on our research helps us better understand research processes and the resulting body of urban planning research and scholarship as a whole

    Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation of hydrogen diffusion in α\alpha-iron

    First-principles atomistic molecular dynamics simulation in the micro-canonical and canonical ensembles has been used to study the diffusion of interstitial hydrogen in α\alpha-iron. Hydrogen to Iron ratios between θ=1/16and1/2havebeenconsideredbylocatinginterstitialhydrogenatomsatrandompositionsina\theta=1/16 and 1/2 have been considered by locating interstitial hydrogen atoms at random positions in a 2 \times 2 \times 2$ supercell. We find that the average optimum absorption site and the barrier for diffusion depend on the concentration of interestitials. Iron Debye temperature decreases monotonically for increasing concentration of interstitial hydrogen, proving that iron-iron interatomic potential is significantly weakened in the presence of a large number of diffusing hydrogen atoms
