A Cointegration Analysis of the Long-Run Supply Response of Spanish Agriculture to the Common Agricultural Policy

Using cointegration techniques, we estimate two models that capture the long-term relationship between Spanish prices and agricultural production. The models were estimated over Spanish agricultural data from 1970 to 2000, a period spanning Spain’s implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy in 1986 and the application of the MacSharry Reforms in 1992. The models, as well asplausible counterfactual scenarios constructed to assess the production changes induced by the CAP, lead to three principal results. First, we find that Spanish agricultural output is responsive to agricultural prices. Second, we find that the MacSharry reforms have been instrumental in restraining agricultural production. Third, we find that Spanish agricultural output would have been higher if Spain had not applied the CAP. These results are important and have broad implications. First, they strengthen the position of those reformers both within and outside of Europe that argue for lower price supports as an appropriate policy for stemming European agricultural surpluses. Second, they indicate that recent EU reforms, which have in effect extended the MacSharry reforms, are appropriate measures for curbing European agricultural surpluses

Algunas aclaraciones en torno a la revista Vida Nueva (1898-1900)

Las  publicaciones  periódicas  de  los  últimos  años  del  XIX  son  una  fuente  de   primer  orden  para  el  análisis  cultural  del  fin  de  siglo.  Para  ello  las  más  indicadas  son  las   revistas  realizadas  por  las  jóvenes  élites  intelectuales.  Vida  Nueva  (1898-­‐1900)  es  una   de  esas  cabeceras  en  la  que  colaboraron  autores  como  Juan  Ramón  Jiménez,  Manuel   Machado,  Vicente  Blasco  Ibáñez,  Miguel  de  Unamuno,  Azorín,  Ángel  Ganivet  o  Ramiro   de  Maeztu.  Sin  embargo  —y  en  contraste  con  publicaciones  como  Helios,  Electra  o   Renacimiento—  ha  sido  poco  estudiada.  El  difícil  acceso  a  esta  revista  ha  propiciado   que,  aunque  sea  muy  citada,  sea  poco  conocida.  A  menudo  las  informaciones  que  se   ofrecen  son  incorrectas  aun  en  los  aspectos  más  básicos  (duración,  dirección,   colaboradores).  En  este  trabajo  se  aclaran  esos  aspectos  como  base  para  futuras   investigaciones.Periodic  publications  of  the  last  years  of  the  nineteenth  century  are  a  prime   source  of  information  for  cultural  analysis  of  the  century´s  end.  The  best  magazines  for   this  analysis  are  the  publications  made  by  young  writers  and  modernist  intellectuals.   The  weekly  Vida  Nueva  (1898-­‐1900)  is  one  of  those  publications.  In  Vida  Nueva  worked   writers  like  Juan  Ramón  Jiménez,  Manuel  Machado,  Vicente  Blasco  Ibáñez,  Miguel  de   Unamuno,  Azorin,  Angel  Ganivet  or  Maeztu.  However,  and  in  contrast  with  headers  like   Helios,  Electra  or  Renacimiento,  has  been  little  studied.  The  difficult  access  to  funds   that  magazine  has  meant  that,  even  if  often  quoted,  is  little  known.  Often  the   information  offered  is  incorrect  and  contradictory,  even  in  the  most  basic  aspects   (duration,  direction  of  the  magazine  reviewers).  In  this  paper  these  aspects  as  a  basis   for  future  research  are  clarified.

Observaciones petrográficas y tectónicas sobre las ofitas del área de Aulet (Prepirineo meridional, prov. de Huesca)

Se describen las diversas facies petrográficas y se indica su distribución en dos de las masas ofíticas del afloramiento de materiales triásicos de los alrededores de Aulet (Huesca). Se expresa su composición quimica que refleja elevada uniformidad y escasa diferenciación, mostrando analogía con los basaltos toleíticos continentales. Se ratifica su edad (Keuper-Lías) por el método óptico de la dispersión de la birrefringencia (Kd) y se adjunta una breve exposición de los fundamentos del método. Finalmente se analiza la fracturación y su comportamiento en relación con las deformaciones que afectan a la cobertera supratriásica

Is the Voter Model a model for voters?

The voter model has been studied extensively as a paradigmatic opinion dynamics' model. However, its ability for modeling real opinion dynamics has not been addressed. We introduce a noisy voter model (accounting for social influence) with agents' recurrent mobility (as a proxy for social context), where the spatial and population diversity are taken as inputs to the model. We show that the dynamics can be described as a noisy diffusive process that contains the proper anysotropic coupling topology given by population and mobility heterogeneity. The model captures statistical features of the US presidential elections as the stationary vote-share fluctuations across counties, and the long-range spatial correlations that decay logarithmically with the distance. Furthermore, it recovers the behavior of these properties when a real-space renormalization is performed by coarse-graining the geographical scale from county level through congressional districts and up to states. Finally, we analyze the role of the mobility range and the randomness in decision making which are consistent with the empirical observations.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure

A note on the combustion of blends of diesel and soya, sunflower and rapeseed vegetable oils in a light boiler

Producción CientíficaThis paper deals with the study of the vegetable oils (VO) used as fuel for heating. The properties of sunflower, rape and soya oils are studied and these are compared with the properties of C-diesel fuel (used for heating domestic purposes in Spain). The mixtures of VO and diesel are studied and characterized and, finally, the results of a series of combustion trials of the mixtures in a conventional heating installation with a mechanical pulverization burner are presented. The results show that viscosity of VO limits the use of blends up to 40% of them, and the oxygen present in their structures contributes to an efficiency gai
