Amenability of algebras of approximable operators
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for amenability of the Banach
algebra of approximable operators on a Banach space. We further investigate the
relationship between amenability of this algebra and factorization of
operators, strengthening known results and developing new techniques to
determine whether or not a given Banach space carries an amenable algebra of
approximable operators. Using these techniques, we are able to show, among
other things, the non-amenability of the algebra of approximable operators on

Adam Smithâs Green Thumb and Malthusâ Three Horsemen: Cautionary tales from classical political economy
This essay identifies a contradiction between the flourishing interest in the environmental economics of the classical period and a lack of critical parsing of the works of its leading representatives. Its focus is the work of Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus. It offers a critical analysis of their contribution to environmental thought and surveys the work of their contemporary devotees. It scrutinizes Smith's contribution to what Karl Polanyi termed the "economistic fallacy," as well as his defenses of class hierarchy, the "growth imperative" and consumerism. It subjects to critical appraisal Malthus's enthusiasm for private property and the market system, and his opposition to market regulation. While Malthus's principal attraction to ecological economists lies in his having allegedly broadened the scope of economics, and in his narrative of scarcity, this article shows that he, in fact, narrowed the scope of the discipline and conceptualized scarcity in a reified and pseudo-scientific way
Flavor in Minimal Conformal Technicolor
We construct a complete, realistic, and natural UV completion of minimal
conformal technicolor that explains the origin of quark and lepton masses and
mixing angles. As in "bosonic technicolor", we embed conformal technicolor in a
supersymmetric theory, with supersymmetry broken at a high scale. The exchange
of heavy scalar doublets generates higher-dimension interactions between
technifermions and quarks and leptons that give rise to quark and lepton masses
at the TeV scale. Obtaining a sufficiently large top quark mass requires strong
dynamics at the supersymmetry breaking scale in both the top and technicolor
sectors. This is natural if the theory above the supersymmetry breaking also
has strong conformal dynamics. We present two models in which the strong top
dynamics is realized in different ways. In both models, constraints from
flavor-changing effects can be easily satisfied. The effective theory below the
supersymmetry breaking scale is minimal conformal technicolor with an
additional light technicolor gaugino. We argue that this light gaugino is a
general consequence of conformal technicolor embedded into a supersymmetric
theory. If the gaugino has mass below the TeV scale it will give rise to an
additional pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson that is observable at the LHC.Comment: 37 pages; references adde
Minimal Conformal Technicolor and Precision Electroweak Tests
We study the minimal model of conformal technicolor, an SU(2) gauge theory
near a strongly coupled conformal fixed point, with conformal symmetry softly
broken by technifermion mass terms. Conformal symmetry breaking triggers chiral
symmetry breaking in the pattern SU(4) -> Sp(4), which gives rise to a
pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson that can act as a composite Higgs boson. The top
quark is elementary, and the top and electroweak gauge loop contributions to
the Higgs mass are cut off entirely by Higgs compositeness. In particular, the
model requires no top partners and no "little Higgs" mechanism. A nontrivial
vacuum alignment results from the interplay of the top loop and technifermion
mass terms. The composite Higgs mass is completely determined by the top loop,
in the sense that m_h/m_t is independent of the vacuum alignment and is
computable by a strong-coupling calculation. There is an additional composite
pseudoscalar A with mass larger than m_h and suppressed direct production at
LHC. We discuss the electroweak fit in this model in detail. Corrections to Z
-> bb and the T parameter from the top sector are suppressed by the enhanced
Sp(4) custodial symmetry. Even assuming that the strong contribution to the S
parameter is positive and usuppressed, a good electroweak fit can be obtained
for v/f ~ 0.25, where v and f are the electroweak and chiral symmetry breaking

Circumstellar Medium Interaction in SN 2018lab, A Low-Luminosity II-P Supernova observed with TESS
We present photometric and spectroscopic data of SN 2018lab, a low luminosity
type IIP supernova (LLSN) with a V-band peak luminosity of mag.
SN 2018lab was discovered by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc (DLT40) SNe survey
only 0.73 days post-explosion, as determined by observations from the
Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TESS observations of SN 2018lab
yield a densely sampled, fast-rising, early time light curve likely powered by
circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction. The blue-shifted, broadened flash
feature in the earliest spectra (2 days) of SN 2018lab provide further
evidence for ejecta-CSM interaction. The early emission features in the spectra
of SN 2018lab are well described by models of a red supergiant progenitor with
an extended envelope and close-in CSM. As one of the few LLSNe with observed
flash features, SN 2018lab highlights the need for more early spectra to
explain the diversity of flash feature morphology in type II SNe
Familial Linkage between Neuropsychiatric Disorders and Intellectual Interests
From personality to neuropsychiatric disorders, individual differences in brain function are known to have a strong heritable component. Here we report that between close relatives, a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders covary strongly with intellectual interests. We surveyed an entire class of high-functioning young adults at an elite university for prospective major, familial incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders, and demographic and attitudinal questions. Students aspiring to technical majors (science/mathematics/engineering) were more likely than other students to report a sibling with an autism spectrum disorder (pâ=â0.037). Conversely, students interested in the humanities were more likely to report a family member with major depressive disorder (pâ=â8.8Ă10â4), bipolar disorder (pâ=â0.027), or substance abuse problems (pâ=â1.9Ă10â6). A combined PREdisposition for Subject MattEr (PRESUME) score based on these disorders was strongly predictive of subject matter interests (pâ=â9.6Ă10â8). Our results suggest that shared genetic (and perhaps environmental) factors may both predispose for heritable neuropsychiatric disorders and influence the development of intellectual interests
Thermal stratification and meromixis in four dilute temperate zone lakes
Four adjacent lakes (Arco, Budd, Deming, and Josephine) within Itasca State Park in Minnesota, USA, are reported to be meromictic in the scientific literature. However, seasonally persistent chemoclines have never been documented. We collected seasonal profiles of temperature and specific conductance and placed temperature sensor chains in two lakes for âź1 year to explore whether these lakes remain stratified through seasonal mixing events and what factors contribute to their stability. The results indicate that all lakes are predominantly thermally stratified and are prone to mixing in isothermal periods during spring and fall. Despite brief, semi-annual erosion of thermal stratification, Deming Lake showed no signs of complete mixing from 2006â2009 and 2019â2022 and is likely meromictic. However, the other lakes are not convincingly meromictic. Geochemical data indicate that water in Budd Lake, which contains the most water, is predominantly sourced from precipitation. The water in the other three lakes is of the calciumâmagnesiumâbicarbonate type, reflecting a source of water that has interacted with the deglaciated landscape. and measurements indicate the lakes are supplied by precipitation modified by evaporation. Josephine, Arco, and Deming lakes sit in a valley with likely permeable sediments and may be hydrologically connected through wetlands and recharged with shallow groundwater, as no streams are present. The water residence time in meromictic Deming Lake is short (100âd), yet it maintains a large reservoir of dissolved iron, indicating that shallow groundwater may be an additional source of water and dissolved ions. All four lakes develop subsurface chlorophyll maxima layers during the summer. All lakes also develop subsurface oxygen maxima that may result from oxygen trapping in the spring by rapidly developed summer thermoclines. Documenting the mixing status and general chemistry of these lakes enhances their utility and accessibility for future biogeochemical studies, which is important as lake stratification and anoxia are becoming more prevalent due to changes in climate and land use.This article is published as Swanner, E. Contemporary Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia in the United States: Insights From the CASCADE FH Registry

Epub 2023 Jun 1.Free PMC article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10227232/Background: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare, treatment-resistant disorder characterized by earlyonset atherosclerotic and aortic valvular cardiovascular disease if left untreated. Contemporary information on HoFH in the United States is lacking, and the extent of underdiagnosis and undertreatment is uncertain. Methods and Results: Data were analyzed from 67 children and adults with clinically diagnosed HoFH from the CASCADE (Cascade Screening for Awareness and Detection) FH Registry. Genetic diagnosis was confirmed in 43 patients. We used the clinical characteristics of genetically confirmed patients with HoFH to query the Family Heart Database, a US anonymized payer health database, to estimate the number of patients with similar lipid profiles in a âreal-worldâ setting. Untreated lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower in adults than children (533 versus 776mg/dL; P=0.001). At enrollment, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and supravalvular and aortic valve stenosis were present in 78.4% and 43.8% and 25.5% and 18.8% of adults and children, respectively. At most recent follow-up, despite multiple lipid-lowering treatment, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol goals were achieved in only a minority of adults and children. Query of the Family Heart Database identified 277 individuals with profiles similar to patients with genetically confirmed HoFH. Advanced lipid-lowering treatments were prescribed for 18%; 40% were on no lipid-lowering treatment; atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease was reported in 20%; familial hypercholesterolemia diagnosis was uncommon. Conclusions: Only patients with the most severe HoFH phenotypes are diagnosed early. HoFH remains challenging to treat. Results from the Family Heart Database indicate HoFH is systemically underdiagnosed and undertreated. The origin and evolution of the normal Type Ia SN 2018aoz with infant-phase reddening and excess emission
SN~2018aoz is a Type Ia SN with a -band plateau and excess emission in the
infant-phase light curves 1 day after first light, evidencing an
over-density of surface iron-peak elements as shown in our previous study.
Here, we advance the constraints on the nature and origin of SN~2018aoz based
on its evolution until the nebular phase. Near-peak spectroscopic features show
the SN is intermediate between two subtypes of normal Type Ia: Core-Normal and
Broad-Line. The excess emission could have contributions from the radioactive
decay of surface iron-peak elements as well as ejecta interaction with either
the binary companion or a small torus of circumstellar material. Nebular-phase
limits on H and He~I favour a white dwarf companion, consistent with
the small companion size constrained by the low early SN luminosity, while the
absence of [O~I] and He~I disfavours a violent merger of the progenitor. Of the
two main explosion mechanisms proposed to explain the distribution of surface
iron-peak elements in SN~2018aoz, the asymmetric Chandrasekhar-mass explosion
is less consistent with the progenitor constraints and the observed blueshifts
of nebular-phase [Fe~II] and [Ni~II]. The helium-shell double-detonation
explosion is compatible with the observed lack of C spectral features, but
current 1-D models are incompatible with the infant-phase excess emission,
color, and absence of nebular-phase [Ca~II]. Although
the explosion processes of SN~2018aoz still need to be more precisely
understood, the same processes could produce a significant fraction of Type Ia
