Investigation of leptospirosis in febrile patients from Manabí communities (Ecuador)

The aim of this study was determine whether fever is associated with the presence of leptospiral DNA in human sera detected with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). DNA was extracted from 576 samples of human serum (513 febrile and 63 non-febrile) obtained between February 2014 to July 2015 from semi-urban parishes Calderón and Santa Ana in Portoviejo city. DNA was analyzed first with real time PCR (PCR-RT), followed by conventional PCR to amplify the 16S ribosomal RNA (rrs) subunit from Leptospira sp. Finally, the 331 base pairs (bp) amplicons obtained were sent to be sequenced. The rrs sequences were detected in 2 out of 513 (0.5%) febrile patients and 0 of 63 (0.0%) from non-febrile patients.El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar si la fiebre está asociada a la presencia de ADN de Leptospira detectado en suero humano con PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Se extrajo ADN de 576 muestras de suero humano (513 febriles y 63 no febriles) obtenidos entre Febrero del 2014 y Julio del 2015 en la parroquia semi-urbana de Calderón y el cantón Santa Ana en Portoviejo. Para este análisis se utilizó PCR en tiempo real (PCR-RT) seguido de PCR convencional, para amplificar el gen de la subunidad 16S ribosomal (rrs) de Leptospira sp. Finalmente los amplicones de 331 pares de bases (pb) obtenidos, fueron secuenciados. Se detectó secuencias del gen rrs en 2 de 513 (0.5%) de pacientes febriles y 0 de 63 (0.0%) de las muestras de personas no febriles

Dual antibacterial effect of immobilized quaternary ammonium and aliphatic groups on PVC

A coating comprising quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) and aliphatic moieties was formed on the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) surface in order to confer antibacterial activity. This was achieved by grafting mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane onto PVC, followed by aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Betaine and dodecenyl succinic anhydride (DDSA) were bonded to free amine groups. The modified PVC samples were characterized by FT-IR, showing that the PVC surface was successfully coated. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed the spatial distributions of the elements Si and S, indicating that the coatings were homogeneous. Betaine and DDSA coated PVC showed a better antibacterial performance than the controls. This antibacterial effect was extremely reinforced in betaine-DDSA modified PVC showing greater antibacterial activity than both treatments separately applied. Antibacterial activity against Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis was studied in the treated samples showing that the coating was effective against Gram positive and Gram negative species.Fil: Villanueva, María Emilia. Sobrevida en pacientes con cáncer colorectal estadios I a IV y descripción de factores clínicos y biológicos en pacientes atendidos en el Hospital Militar Central entre 1998 y 2008

El presente es un estudio de análisis de sobrevida basado en una cohorte retrospectiva de pacientes con CCR, el cual nos permite establecer el desenlace primario que es sobrevida global a 3 y 5 cinco años. El análisis se realizará mediante el programa estadístico SPSS. Se realizara un cálculo global de la sobrevida de los pacientes, así como la probabilidad de morir a 3 y 5 años respectivamente. Big Borges: What Can Big Data Show About a Classic Writer on Social Networks?

Yet Borges is not only a “classic” and a cult figure in humanist, scientific and technological discourse, but also – paradoxically – he is equally revered in mass media, particularly on social media like Twitter. There is no doubt that this media discourse – based on his myth and his oral output – forms part of his oeuvre and of his poetics of fiction. It is therefore necessary to analyse it from both a quantitative and qualitative point of view in order to measure his current impact on media holistically. Moreover, the case study that we hereby present opens up a new line of research in the field of literary studies, which means that we need to expand the notion of the writer figure based on the (re)production, circulation and consumption of the authorial image and of the literary text – oral and written – on social networks. It will even help us to reconsider the value of literature in (digital) mass culture and the need to resignify the aesthetics of reception in the era of big data
