    Effects of total knee arthroplasty on ankle alignment in patients with varus gonarthrosis : do we sacrifice ankle to the knee?

    Total knee arthroplasty is one of the most commonly preferred surgical methods in the treatment of patients with varus gonarthrosis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the radiological changes observed in the ankles after total knee arthroplasty. Between May 2012 and June 2013, 80 knees of 78 patients with varus deformity over 10A degrees underwent total knee arthroplasty. For each patient, full-leg standing radiographs were obtained pre- and post-operatively. Mechanical and anatomical axes (HKA and AA), lateral distal femoral angle, medial proximal tibial angle, lateral distal tibial angle (LDTA), ankle joint line orientation angle (AJOA), tibial plafond talus angle (PTA) and talar shift were measured for each patient both pre- and post-operatively. Pre-operatively, the mean HKA was 16.6A degrees and the mean AA was 10.41A degrees, both in favour of varus alignment. Post-operatively, the mean HKA decreased to 3.6A degrees and the mean AA to -2.1. The mean LDTA was 87.3A degrees. Before the operation, the mean AJOA was -7.6A degrees, opening to the medial aspect of the ankle, and it was 0.04A degrees after the operation and opening to the lateral aspect (p < 0.05). Our study reveals the changes occurring in the ankle after acute correction of long-standing varus deformity of the knee using total knee arthroplasty. In cases undergoing knee arthroplasty, effect of the acute change in the alignment of the knee on the ankle should be taken into consideration and the amount of correction should be calculated carefully in order not to damage the alignment of the ankle

    Asymmetric effects of central bank funding on commercial banking sector behaviour

    In this paper, we assess the effects of Central Bank Funding (C.B.F.) on commercial bank lending behaviour by using weekly Turkish data from 7 January 2011 to 5 June 2015. To be specific, using the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag Error Correction Model, we assess the effects of C.B.F. provided daily by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey through Open Market Operations to financial markets. Our empirical evidence reveals that for all types of lending, an increase in C.B.F. (which has a higher cost for commercial banks relative to alternatives) forces commercial banks to borrow from higher-cost channels, i.e., we find that increasing C.B.F. discourages commercial bank lending. We also find that decreases in C.B.F. that proxy what commercial banks can borrow more cheaply from alternative sources increase commercial bank lending. However, increasing C.B.F. is more effect- ive than decreasing C.B.F. for Total Bank Loans, Total Credit Cards and Automobile Loans, and decreasing C.B.F. is more effective in the short run for Consumption Loans, Housing Loans and Commercial Loans:short-run asymmetry. Therefore, we can report only limited support forlong-run asymmetry, and consequently, claim that there ismagnitude(an increase versus decrease in C.B.F.) andcategory asymmetry(across different lending categories)

    Some generalizations for mixed multivalued mappings

    [EN] In this paper, we first introduce a new concept of KW-type m-contraction mapping. Then, we obtain some fixed point results for these mappings on M-metric spaces. Thus, we extend many well-known results for both single valued mappings and multivalued mappings such as the main results of Klim and Wardowski [13] and Altun et al. [4].     Unicameral bone cyst of the lunate in an adult: case report

    We report a case of a symptomatic unicameral (simple) bone cyst of the lunate in a 42-year- old woman. The lesion was treated with curettage and cancellous autogenous iliac bone grafting. At five years of follow-up the wrist was pain free, there were no limitations of motion, and the radiographs showed complete obliteration of the cavity. To the best of our knowledge, no other unicameral bone cyst of the lunate has been reported in an adult. Cysts with significant cavities at the carpal bones in an adult should be approached cautiously, as they may require early curettage and bone grafting for healing, before collapse and degenerative changes occur

Then we present some best proximity point results for such mappings defined on proximally complete pair of subsets of a&nbsp;metric space. Also, we provide some illustrative examples that compared our results with some earliest. Finally, by taking into account a&nbsp;fixed point consequence of our main result we give an existence and uniqueness result for a common solution of a&nbsp;system of second order boundary value problems

    Nondestructive Test Methods for Rapid Assessment of Flexible Base Performance in Transportation Infrastructures

    Well-built roads with longer service life and lesser life cycle cost are the key to meet the desired target of satisfying the public without compromising the quality of roads. Roads that are constructed and built with poor quality materials and inadequate design considerations frequently require costly maintenance and rehabilitation often resulting in detours and lane closures, which not just reduce the comfort of the public but also interrupt the efficient flow of transporting goods, and hence the associated businesses. Therefore, it is imperative that alternative quality control and quality assurance methods along with effective test methods and smart transportation planning must be considered and implemented to help communities increase the economic prosperity while retaining and ensuring a high quality of life to the people. The appropriate application of reliability to pavement design is essential to achieve the main objectives of designing quality pavements to serve the traveling public with comfort and safety while being durable in service at a minimum life cycle cost. The quality of the base layer of the pavement, which is located directly beneath the surface, is one of the most critical components in designing a pavement with increased service life and durability. The base layer is primarily composed of aggregates and contributes to the structural stability of the pavement system by providing load transfer and support. A base course with adequate thickness and built with high quality aggregates is essential to meet the necessary performance criteria and in doing so will cut down on reconstruction cycles and cost of maintenance. This research attempts to contribute in this regard by evaluating the significance of using the fundamental material properties to develop models which characterize the base layer in a pavement system. These new models will have significant contributions to soil mechanics and highway design procedures. This research and the developed models depend upon fundamental soil properties. This work capitalizes upon the fundamental properties to make extensive use of these models for quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA), in the pre-design procedure and construction phase. The most significant impact of the work is to replace and improve current methods, increase work efficiency, minimize time spent in the laboratory, find more convenient relationships, reduce costs, and improve sustainability. In addition, the quickly and accurately measured aggregate characteristics of base courses will be used to determine the in-place and as-compacted design properties for QC and QA

    Characterization of Expansive Soil For Retaining Wall Design

    The current design procedure for cantilever structures on spread footings in the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is based on horizontal pressure that is calculated by using Rankine's and Coulomb's theory. These are classical Geotechnical Engineering methods. Horizontal earth pressure due to moisture and volume change in high plasticity soil is not determined by these classical methods. However, horizontal pressure on most of the cantilever retaining structures in Texas is determined by following the classical methods. In recent years, a number of consultants have considered the horizontal pressure due to swelling on cantilever retaining structures in Texas. However, the proposed horizontal pressure by consultants is 10-20 times higher than the classical horizontal pressure. This method of cantilever retaining structure design without knowing the real pressure and stress pattern increases the thickness of the wall, and raises the cost of construction. This study focuses on providing adequate patterns of lateral earth pressure distribution on cantilever retaining structures in expansive soil. These retaining wall structures are subject to swelling pressures which cause horizontal pressures that are larger than the classical especially near the ground surface. Beside the prediction of lateral earth pressure distribution, the relations between water content, volume change and suction change are determined. Based on the laboratory testing program conducted, Soil Water Characteristic Curves (SWCC) are determined for a site located at the intersection of I-35 and Walters Street in San Antonio, Texas. Additionally, relations between volume change with confining pressure curve, water content change with the change of confining pressure curve, water content change with change of matric suction and volume change with change of matric suction curves are generated based on laboratory tests. There are a number of available mass volume measurement methods that use mostly mercury or paraffin to obtain volume measurements. Although these methods are reported in the literature, they are not used in practice due to application limitations like safety, time, and cost. In order to overcome these limitations, a new method was developed to measure the volume of soil mass by using sand displacement.
