Changes in quercetin and kaempferol concentrations during broccoli head ontogeny in three broccoli cultivars

    Get PDF
Three broccoli cultivars – spear broccoli ‘Emperor’, crown broccoli ‘Marathon’ and violet broccoli ‘Viola’ – were harvested during head ontogeny from start of head development until over maturity stage (five stages) in three different years. The aglycones quercetin and kaempferol were analysed at optimised conditions of acid hydrolysis by HPLC. Heads of over maturity stage had the highest contents of quercetin and kaempferol. However, the genotype fundamentally determined the quantity and course of the increase in flavonols. Mini broccoli, as a new trend to market vegetables, has lower content of flavonols than the commercial stage, which indicates a reduction in health potentials. Harvesting broccoli heads of over maturity stage should be used as raw material, e.g. for the design of new functional foods

AbstractObjectives. Quality of life as an endpoint of surgery and the long-term prognosis for patients who have survived surgery for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (RAAA) is not well-documented.Patients and methods. The records of all patients from 1993 to 2000 who underwent resection of RAAA were reviewed. Survival data were calculated from direct contact with the patients or follow-up records. All patients who were alive at the time of our study were invited to participate in follow-up investigations. They received the internationally comparable WHO-QOL-BREF-test.Results. In a period of 7 years, 80 patients underwent surgery for RAAA. The average follow-up time was 5.1 years (1–7.9 years). Our data show that 51% of our patients died within 6 months postoperatively because of the complications of the aortic rupture (in-hospital mortality 39%). Patients who survived the first 6 months after surgery died for the same reasons as the normal population. However, patients who were younger than 75 at the time of RAAA had a higher relative survival rate than a matched sample of the population. There was no significant difference in the quality of life between the study group and the general population.Conclusions. RAAA survivors had no difference in long-term survival as compared to the general population and also had very few long-term complications. The WHOQOL-BREF-test suggests that the quality of life of survivors of RAAA is similar to the general population

Capacitive sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymers for detection of the insecticide imidacloprid in water

This manuscript reports on the development of a capacitive sensor for the detection of imidacloprid (IMD) in water samples based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). MIPs used as recognition elements were synthesized via a photo-initiated emulsion polymerization. The particles were carefully washed using a methanol (MeOH) / acetic acid mixture to ensure complete template removal and were then dried. The average size of the obtained particles was less than 1 mu m. The imprinting factor (IF) for IMD was 6 and the selectivity factor (alpha) for acetamiprid, clothianidin, thiacloprid and thiamethoxam were 14.8, 6.8, 7.1 and 8.2, respectively. The particles were immobilized on the surface of a gold electrode by electropolymerization. The immobilized electrode could be spontaneously regenerated using a mixture of MeOH/10 mM of phosphate buffer (pH = 7.2)/triethylamine before each measurement and could be reused for 32 times. This is the first-time that automated regeneration was introduced as part of a sensing platform for IMD detection. The developed sensor was validated by the analysis of artificially spiked water samples. Under the optimal conditions, the linearity was in the range of 5-100 mu M, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.61 mu M

Regional Morphogenesis in the Hypothalamus: A BMP-Tbx2 Pathway Coordinates Fate and Proliferation through Shh Downregulation

SummaryA central challenge in embryonic development is to understand how growth and pattern are coordinated to direct emerging new territories during morphogenesis. Here, we report on a signaling cascade that links cell proliferation and fate, promoting formation of a distinct progenitor domain within the developing chick hypothalamus. We show that the downregulation of Shh in floor plate-like cells in the forebrain governs their progression to a distinctive, proliferating hypothalamic progenitor domain. Shh downregulation occurs via a local BMP-Tbx2 pathway, Tbx2 acting to repress Shh expression. We show in vivo and in vitro that forced maintenance of Shh in hypothalamic progenitors prevents their normal morphogenesis, leading to maintenance of the Shh receptor, ptc, and preventing progression to an Emx2+-proliferative progenitor state. Our data identify a molecular pathway for the downregulation of Shh via a BMP-Tbx2 pathway and provide a mechanism for expansion of a discrete progenitor domain within the developing forebrain

    Polarization statistics of extra-solar systems

We have analysed the optical polarimetric properties of nearby intermediate-late type MS stars and examined in some detail the pecularities displayed by those known to have planets. We find that: i) the polarization degree is not strictly correlated with the presence of planets; ii) there is a lack of high eccentricity planets at high optical linear polarization levels; iii) no clear correlation is seen between metallicity and polarization amongst extra-solar systems; iv) the contribution to the polarization by the interstellar medium seems to become effective only after ~70 pc.Comment: 4 pages, 5 postscript figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
