    AWARENESS ABOUT THE DRUG SAFETY AND MEDICATION USE AMONG THE PREGNANT WOMEN OF THE NORTHERN BORDER REGION OF SAUDI ARABIA

    The inappropriate drug use during the pregnancy may cause serious complications. However, the consumption of drugs during the pregnancy cannot be totally avoided because of the existing chronic illness that may require continuous treatment or the development of new medical conditions during pregnancy that require therapeutic intervention. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the awareness about the drug safety and medication use among the pregnant women of the Northern Border Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This cross-sectional study was carried out using a pretested and structured questionnaire among the pregnant women (N = 50) of the rural area, near Arar City and Rafha City, of the Northern Border Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The data obtained was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19. It was surprising to note that neither doctors nor the pharmacists provided full information about the medicine to more than 3/4th of the patients. This type of practice by the doctors and pharmacist may pose pregnancy related problems to the expecting mothers and may lead to serious consequences. There is an urgent need to take remedial actions regarding this issue by the concerned authorities of the Northen Border Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.     Axiomatic/asymptotic evaluation of multilayered plate theories by using single and multi-points error criteria

    AbstractThis paper deals with refined theories for multilayered composites plates. Layer-Wise (LW) and Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) theories are evaluated by means of axiomatic–asymptotic approach. Theories with forth order displacement fields in the thickness layer/plate direction z are implemented by referring to the Unified Formulation by Carrera. The effectiveness of each term of the made expansion is evaluated by comparing the related theories with a reference solution. As a result a reduced model is obtained which preserve the accuracy of the full-model (model that include the whole terms of the z-expansion) but it removes the not-significant terms in the same expansion (those terms that do no improve the results according to a given error criteria). Various single-point and multi-point error criteria have been analyzed and compared in order to establish such an effectiveness: error localized in an assigned point along z, error localized at each interface, error located at the z-value corresponding to the maximum value of the considered variables, etc. Applications are given in case of closed form solutions of orthotropic cross-ply, rectangular, simply supported plates loaded by bisinusoidal distribution of transverse pressure. Symmetrically and unsymmetrical laminated cases are considered along with sandwich plates. It is found the reduced model is strongly influenced by the used localized error and that in same case the reduced model which is obtained by of single point criteria can be very much improved by the use of multi-point criteria

    The coordinated action of VCP/p97 and GCN2 regulates cancer cell metabolism and proteostasis during nutrient limitation

    VCP/p97 regulates numerous cellular functions by mediating protein degradation through its segregase activity. Its key role in governing protein homoeostasis has made VCP/p97 an appealing anticancer drug target. Here, we provide evidence that VCP/p97 acts as a regulator of cellular metabolism. We found that VCP/p97 was tied to multiple metabolic processes on the gene expression level in a diverse range of cancer cell lines and in patient-derived multiple myeloma cells. Cellular VCP/p97 dependency to maintain proteostasis was increased under conditions of glucose and glutamine limitation in a range of cancer cell lines from different tissues. Moreover, glutamine depletion led to increased VCP/p97 expression, whereas VCP/p97 inhibition perturbed metabolic processes and intracellular amino acid turnover. GCN2, an amino acid-sensing kinase, attenuated stress signalling and cell death triggered by VCP/p97 inhibition and nutrient shortages and modulated ERK activation, autophagy, and glycolytic metabolite turnover. Together, our data point to an interconnected role of VCP/p97 and GCN2 in maintaining cancer cell metabolic and protein homoeostasis

    Electron-Acoustic (Un)Modulated Structures in a Plasma Having (<i>r</i>, <i>q</i>)-Distributed Electrons: Solitons, Super Rogue Waves, and Breathers

    The propagation of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) in an unmagnetized plasma, comprising (r,q)-distributed hot electrons, cold inertial electrons, and stationary positive ions, is investigated. Both the unmodulated and modulated EAWs, such as solitary waves, rogue waves (RWs), and breathers are discussed. The Sagdeev potential approach is employed to determine the existence domain of electron acoustic solitary structures and study the perfectly symmetric planar nonlinear unmodulated structures. Moreover, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is derived and its modulated solutions, including first order RWs (Peregrine soliton), higher-order RWs (super RWs), and breathers (Akhmediev breathers and Kuznetsov–Ma soliton) are presented. The effects of plasma parameters and, in particular, the effects of spectral indices r and q, of distribution functions on the characteristics of both unmodulated and modulated EAWs, are examined in detail. In a limited cases, the (r,q) distribution is compared with Maxwellian and kappa distributions. The present investigation may be beneficial to comprehend and predict the modulated and unmodulated electron acoustic structures in laboratory and space plasmas

    Attitude of Health-Care Workers to HIV/AIDS

    The current 5% prevalence rate of HIV in Nigeria represents a significant population of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Discrimination against PLWHA has profound impact on the care and support required fro their optimal management particularly in resource-constrained settings. The study sought to assess the knowledge of health-care providers about HIV/AIDS, determine the potential for discrimination in the provision of services based on patients\' HIV sero-status and review the factors that may contribute to such attitude. Self administered semi-structured questionnaires were administered to respondents who were selected by multi-stage sampling technique. The questionnaires explored the respondents\' knowledge about HIV and their attitude and practice regarding PLWHA. Three hundred and forty-five questionnaires were completed. Only 77.1% correctly identified breastfeeding as a source of HIV transmission; 5.2% and 26% respectively thought transmission was possible through mosquito bite and handshake. About 10% and 15% respectively among trained nurses and auxiliary nurses were unaware that HIV could be transmitted to the child during delivery. Some 13.9% and 12.7% of respondents respectively were unwilling to take vital signs and carry out physical examination on PLWHA. Compared to physicians, trained nurses and auxiliary nurses were more likely to deny services based on HIV ero-status. Negative attitude was more likely if the source of the HIV infection was from homosexual exposure or bisexual indiscretion. The health-care workers studied manifested certain attitudes that are potentially discriminatory of PLWHA well-coordinated continuing education of HIV/AIDS for all categories of health-care workers is recommended as a vital strategy in the crusade against the epidemic.     In the present work, the propagation of (non)linear electrostatic waves is reported in a normal (electron–ion) magnetoplasma. The inertialess electrons follow a non-extensive q-distribution, while the positive inertial ions are assumed to be warm mobile. In the linear regime, the dispersion relation for both the fast and slow modes is derived, whose properties are analyzed parametrically, focusing on the effect of nonextensive parameter, component of parallel anisotropic ion pressure, component of perpendicular anisotropic ion pressure, and magnetic field strength. The reductive perturbation technique is employed for reducing the fluid equation of the present plasma model to a Zakharov–Kuznetsov (ZK) equation. The parametric role of physical parameters on the characteristics of the symmetry planar structures such solitary waves is investigated. Furthermore, the stability of the pulse soliton solution of the ZK equation against the oblique perturbations is investigated. Furthermore, the dependence of the instability growth rate on the related physical parameters is examined. The present investigation could be useful in space and astrophysical plasma systems
