    Influence of feeding on the circadian rhythm of digestive enzymes in cultivated juveniles of the freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (Parastacidae)

    Se analiza en juveniles en etapa de engorde (7 g) de Cherax quadricarinatus, el ritmo circadiano de los niveles de proteínas totales, la actividad de las proteasas, lipasas y amilasas, y su posible modificación en función del momento de alimentación matutino (8 h) y vespertino (17 h). En general, la actividad de las enzimas digestivas de los juveniles de C. quadricarinatus no mostró un patrón circadiano de secreción, a excepción de las lipasas, donde se observó un incremento de actividad hacia la tarde-noche y disminución hacia las primeras horas de la mañana. Los niveles de proteína total, la actividad de proteinasas y amilasas registradas en la glándula digestiva, permanecieron prácticamente inalterados en todos los experimentos. A pesar de ello, se observó tendencia a que los niveles de actividad de proteinasas disminuyan luego del pulso de alimentación, recuperando los niveles anteriores 3 h después, independientemente del horario de alimentación. En cambio la actividad de amilasa no mostró ninguna tendencia por efecto del horario de alimentación. El estudio de los patrones de secreción de las enzimas digestivas y sus posibles modificaciones, podría ser utilizado como una herramienta para establecer los momentos del día más propicios para la alimentación de los juveniles en cultivo.ABSTRACT. We analyze in juvenile Cherax quadricarinatus fattening stage, the circadian rhythm of total protein levels, activity of proteases, lipases and amylases, and their possible change as a function of morning (8 h) and evening (17 h) feeding. In general, the activity of digestive enzymes of juvenile C. quadricarinatus showed no circadian pattern of secretion of lipases except where there was an increase towards the evening-night and a decrease towards the early hours of the morning. The total protein levels, the activity of proteinases and amylases of juveniles of C. quadricarinatus registered in the midgut gland remained virtually unchanged in all experiments. However, a non-significant tendency to diminish the proteinase activity levels after the feeding pulse was observed, with a return to previous enzymatic levels after 3 h. In contrast, the amylase activity did not show an observable effect by the feeding schedule. The study of the patterns of the digestive enzyme secretion and their possible changes, could be used as a tool to establish the most favorable times of the day for juveniles feeding.Fil: Sacristán, Hernán Javier.     What Matters Most to Patients and Rheumatologists? A Discrete Choice Experiment in Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Introduction: To determine patient and rheumatologist preferences for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment attributes in Spain and to evaluate their attitude towards shared decision-making (SDM). Methods: Observational, descriptive, exploratory and cross-sectional study based on a discrete choice experiment (DCE). To identify the attributes and their levels, a literature review and two focus groups (patients [P] = 5; rheumatologists [R] = 4) were undertaken. Seven attributes with 2–4 levels were presented in eight scenarios. Attribute utility and relative importance (RI) were assessed using a conditional logit model. Patient preferences for SDM were assessed using an ad hoc questionnaire. Results: Ninety rheumatologists [52.2% women; mean years of experience 18.1 (SD: 9.0); seeing an average of 24.4 RA patients/week (SD: 15.3)] and 137 RA patients [mean age: 47.5 years (SD: 10.7); 84.0% women; mean time since diagnosis of RA: 14.2 years (SD: 11.8) and time in treatment: 13.2 years (SD: 11.2), mean HAQ score 1.2 (SD: 0.7)] participated in the study. In terms of RI, rheumatologists and RA patients viewed: time with optimal QoL: R: 23.41%/P: 35.05%; substantial symptom improvement: R: 13.15%/P: 3.62%; time to onset of treatment action: R: 16.24%/P: 13.56%; severe adverse events: R: 10.89%/P: 11.20%; mild adverse events: R: 4.16%/P: 0.91%; mode of administration: R: 25.23%/P: 25.00%; and added cost: R: 6.93%/P: 10.66%. Nearly 73% of RA patients were involved in treatment decision-making to a greater or lesser extent; however, 27.4% did not participate at all. Conclusion: Both for rheumatologists and patients, the top three decision-making drivers are time with optimal quality, treatment mode of administration and time to onset of action, although in different ranking order. Patients were willing to be more involved in the treatment decision-making process

    Universal Reconfiguration of Facet-Connected Modular Robots by Pivots: The O(1) Musketeers

    We present the first universal reconfiguration algorithm for transforming a modular robot between any two facet-connected square-grid configurations using pivot moves. More precisely, we show that five extra "helper" modules ("musketeers") suffice to reconfigure the remaining n modules between any two given configurations. Our algorithm uses O(n^2) pivot moves, which is worst-case optimal. Previous reconfiguration algorithms either require less restrictive "sliding" moves, do not preserve facet-connectivity, or for the setting we consider, could only handle a small subset of configurations defined by a local forbidden pattern. Configurations with the forbidden pattern do have disconnected reconfiguration graphs (discrete configuration spaces), and indeed we show that they can have an exponential number of connected components. But forbidding the local pattern throughout the configuration is far from necessary, as we show that just a constant number of added modules (placed to be freely reconfigurable) suffice for universal reconfigurability. We also classify three different models of natural pivot moves that preserve facet-connectivity, and show separations between these models

    High seroprevalence of feline morbilliviruses in free-roaming domestic cats in Chile

    Feline morbillivirus infections have gained increased attention due to repeated reports of their association with urinary tract disease in cats. In the present study, 112 serum samples from free-roaming domestic cats in Chile were tested for antibodies against feline morbillivirus genotypes 1 and 2 (FeMV-1 and FeMV-2) using an indirect immunofluorescence assay. In total, 63% of the animals showed antibodies against one or both FeMV genotypes. Antibodies directed exclusively against FeMV-2 were significantly more prevalent in male cats. The correlation of sex and FeMV-2 infection might give insight into potential routes of transmission. We provide, for the first time, serological data on FeMV in Chile

    EHRtemporalVariability: delineating temporal data-set shifts in electronic health records

    [EN] Background: Temporal variability in health-care processes or protocols is intrinsic to medicine. Such variability can potentially introduce dataset shifts, a data quality issue when reusing electronic health records (EHRs) for secondary purposes. Temporal data-set shifts can present as trends, as well as abrupt or seasonal changes in the statistical distributions of data over time. The latter are particularly complicated to address in multimodal and highly coded data. These changes, if not delineated, can harm population and data-driven research, such as machine learning. Given that biomedical research repositories are increasingly being populated with large sets of historical data from EHRs, there is a need for specific software methods to help delineate temporal data-set shifts to ensure reliable data reuse. Results: EHRtemporalVariability is an open-source R package and Shiny app designed to explore and identify temporal data-set shifts. EHRtemporalVariability estimates the statistical distributions of coded and numerical data over time; projects their temporal evolution through non-parametric information geometric temporal plots; and enables the exploration of changes in variables through data temporal heat maps. We demonstrate the capability of EHRtemporalVariability to delineate data-set shifts in three impact case studies, one of which is available for reproducibility. Conclusions: EHRtemporalVariability enables the exploration and identification of data-set shifts, contributing to the broad examination and repurposing of large, longitudinal data sets. Our goal is to help ensure reliable data reuse for a wide range of biomedical data users.     Electrical activity of crystal defects in multicrystalline Si

    Producción CientíficaUpgraded metallurgical-grade silicon solar cells with different ranges of efficiencies have been characterized by light-beam-induced current (LBIC) measurements. The interaction between grain boundaries and metallic impurities is studied for cells fabricated on wafers from different solidification heights of the ingot. A tight relation is observed between the electrical activity of the grain boundaries and the position of the wafer in the ingot, which is related to the impurity contamination. The presence of a large amount of metallic impurities enhances the electrical activity of the grain boundaries.
