Beyond CP violation: hadronic physics at BaBar

I report on recent studies of hadronic physics performed by the BaBar Collaboration. Emphasis is given to the measurement of the properties of newly discovered charmed hadrons and to the searches for light and heavy pentaquarks.Comment: 14 pages, 20 postscript figues, contributed to the Proceedings of the First APS Topical Group Meeting on Hadron Physics, Fermilab, Batavia, IL (October 24-26, 2004

    Search for the Θˉ−→\bar{\Theta}^- \to K−^- nˉ\bar{n} with PHENIX

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC should be sensitive to decays of the the anti--pentaquark Θˉ−\bar{\Theta}^- via the K−^- nˉ\bar{n} channel. Charged kaons can be identified using the standard tracking and time of flight up to a momentum of 1.5 GeV/c. Anti--neutron candidates are detected via their annihilation signal in the highly segmented electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal). In order to assess the quality of the anti--neutron identification we reconstruct the Σˉ→nˉπ\bar{\Sigma} \to \bar{n}\pi. As an additional crosscheck the invariant mass of K+^+ nˉ\bar{n} is reconstructed where no resonance in the pentaquark mass range is expected. At the present time no enhancement at the expected pentaquark mass is observed in dAu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV.Comment: 4 pages 5 figures contribution to the proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (Quark Matter, Oakland, January 11-17, 2004). Light-Front Approach for Pentaquark Strong Decays

Assuming the two diquark structure for the pentaquark state as advocated in the Jaffe-Wilczek model, we study the strong decays of light and heavy parity-even pentaquark states using the light-front quark model in conjunction with the spectator approximation. The narrowness of the Theta width is ascribed to the p-wave configuration of the diquark pair. Taking the Theta width as a benchmark, we estimate the rates of the strong decays Xi_{3/2}-- to Xi- pi-, Sigma- K-, Sigma_{5c}0 to D_s- p, D_{s0}*- p and Xi_{5c}0 to D_s- Sigma+, D_{s0}^{*-} Sigma+ with Sigma_{5c} Xi_{5c} being antisextet charmed pentaquarks and D_{s0}* a scalar strange charmed meson. The ratio of Gamma(P_c to Baryon D_{s0}*)/Gamma(P_c to Baryon D_s) is very useful for verifying the parity of the antisextet charmed pentaquark P_c. It is expected to be of order unity for an even parity P_c and much less than one for an odd parity pentaquark.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figure

Prospects for Pentaquark Searches in e+e−e^+e^- Annihilations and γγ\gamma\gamma Collisions

Recent strong experimental evidence of a narrow exotic S = +1 baryon resonance, Θ+\Theta^+, suggests the existence of other exotic baryons. We discuss the prospects of confirming earlier experimental evidence of Θ+\Theta^+ and the observation of additional hypothetical exotic baryons in e+e−e^+e^- annihilations and γγ\gamma\gamma collisions at LEP and B Factories

    1/N Expansion for Exotic Baryons

The 1/N expansion for exotic baryons is developed, and applied to the masses, meson couplings and decay widths. Masses and widths of the 27 and 35 pentaquark states in the same tower as the Theta+ are related by spin-flavor symmetry. The 27 and 35 states can decay within the pentaquark tower, as well as to normal baryons, and so have larger decay widths than the lightest pentaquark Theta. The 1/N expansion also is applied to baryon exotics containing a single heavy antiquark. The decay widths of heavy pentaquarks via pion emission, and to normal baryons plus heavy D^(*),B^(*) mesons are studied, and relations following from large-N spin-flavor symmetry and from heavy quark symmetry are derived.Comment: Major additions: plots of widths and branching ratios, discussion of strong decays of heavy pentaquarks, including consequences of heavy quark symmetr

Magnetic moment of the pentaquark Θ+(1540)\Theta^+(1540) with light-cone QCD sum rules

In this article, we study the magnetic moment of the pentaquark state Θ+(1540) \Theta^+(1540) as diquark-diquark-antiquark ([ud][ud]sˉ[ud][ud]\bar{s}) state in the framework of the light-cone QCD sum rules approach. The numerical results indicate the magnetic moment of the pentaquark state Θ+(1540) \Theta^+(1540) is about μΘ+=−(0.49±0.06)μN\mu_{\Theta^+}=-(0.49\pm 0.06)\mu_N.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure. Possibility of determinig the parity of the pentaquark Θ+\Theta^+ from photoproduction near threshold

We discuss the possibility of determining the parity of the Θ+\Theta^+ baryon from photoproduction γN→KΘ+\gamma N\to K\Theta^+ process near threshold. We utilize the conservation laws of parity and angular momentum for the analysis of angular distributions and spin observables near threshold. Since the discussion is in essence a partial wave analysis of the production mechanism the result should be less dependent on the model parameters. Our analysis shows that the angular distribution and photon polarization asymmetry for the process of neutron target are sensitive to the parity of the Θ+\Theta^+, but not for the case of proton target. In the case of proton target, the polarization asymmetries of target and recoiled Θ+\Theta^+ are preferred for parity determination.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, extended versio
