Planning for the mobile library: a strategy for managing innovation and transformation at the University of Glasgow Library
Modern mobile devices have powerful features that are transforming access to information. Lippincott argues that as mobile devices such as smartphones become ‘key information devices’ for our users, libraries will want to have a significant presence in offering content and services that are suitable for this medium. This article outlines the process of development and implementation of a mobile strategy at the University of Glasgow Library. What began as an investigation into a mobile interface to the library catalogue evolved into a comprehensive strategic review of how we deliver services now and in the future in this rapidly changing mobile environment
Challenging the orthodoxy: union learning representatives as organic intellectuals
Teacher education and continuing professional development have become a key areas of controversy in England since the period of school sector restructuring following the 1988 Education Reform Act. More recently teacher training and professional development have often been used to promote and reinforce a narrow focus on the government’s ‘standards agenda’. However, the emerging discourse of ‘new professionalism’ has raised the profile of professional development in schools, and together with union learning representatives, there are opportunities to secure real improvements in teachers’ access to continuing professional development. This paper argues however that union learning representatives must go beyond advocating for better access to professional development and should raise more fundamental questions about the nature of professional development and the education system it serves. Drawing on Gramsci’s notion of the ‘organic intellectual’, the paper argues that union learning representatives have a key role as organisers of ideas – creating spaces in which the ideological dominance of current policy orthodoxy might be challenged
Asteroid family identification using the Hierarchical Clustering Method and WISE/NEOWISE physical properties
Using albedos from WISE/NEOWISE to separate distinct albedo groups within the
Main Belt asteroids, we apply the Hierarchical Clustering Method to these
subpopulations and identify dynamically associated clusters of asteroids. While
this survey is limited to the ~35% of known Main Belt asteroids that were
detected by NEOWISE, we present the families linked from these objects as
higher confidence associations than can be obtained from dynamical linking
alone. We find that over one-third of the observed population of the Main Belt
is represented in the high-confidence cores of dynamical families. The albedo
distribution of family members differs significantly from the albedo
distribution of background objects in the same region of the Main Belt, however
interpretation of this effect is complicated by the incomplete identification
of lower-confidence family members. In total we link 38,298 asteroids into 76
distinct families. This work represents a critical step necessary to debias the
albedo and size distributions of asteroids in the Main Belt and understand the

Probiotics, with special emphasis on their role in the management of irritable bowel syndrome
Probiotics are live microorganisms, and when administered in adequate amounts, bestow beneficial effects on the host. The therapeutic andpreventative application of probiotics in several disorders is receiving increasing attention, and this is especially true when gastrointestinal microbiota is thought to be involved in their pathogenesis, as in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Given the increasingly widespread use of probiotics, a thorough understanding of their risks and benefits is important. The purpose of this review is to update healthcare professionals on current probiotic information, and provide an overview of probiotic treatment approaches, with special emphasis on IBS
Density distributions of superheavy nuclei
We employed the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model to investigate the density
distributions and their dependence on nuclear shapes and isospins in the
superheavy mass region. Different Skyrme forces were used for the calculations
with a special comparison to the experimental data in Pb. The
ground-state deformations, nuclear radii, neutron skin thicknesses and
-decay energies were also calculated. Density distributions were
discussed with the calculations of single-particle wavefunctions and shell
fillings. Calculations show that deformations have considerable effects on the
density distributions, with a detailed discussion on the 120 nucleus.
Earlier predictions of remarkably low central density are not supported when
deformation is allowed for.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure
Main Belt Asteroids with WISE/NEOWISE: Near-Infrared Albedos
We present revised near-infrared albedo fits of 2835 Main Belt asteroids
observed by WISE/NEOWISE over the course of its fully cryogenic survey in 2010.
These fits are derived from reflected-light near-infrared images taken
simultaneously with thermal emission measurements, allowing for more accurate
measurements of the near-infrared albedos than is possible for visible albedo
measurements. As our sample requires reflected light measurements, it
undersamples small, low albedo asteroids, as well as those with blue spectral
slopes across the wavelengths investigated. We find that the Main Belt
separates into three distinct groups of 6%, 16%, and 40% reflectance at 3.4 um.
Conversely, the 4.6 um albedo distribution spans the full range of possible
values with no clear grouping. Asteroid families show a narrow distribution of
3.4 um albedos within each family that map to one of the three observed
groupings, with the (221) Eos family being the sole family associated with the
16% reflectance 3.4 um albedo group. We show that near-infrared albedos derived
from simultaneous thermal emission and reflected light measurements are an
important indicator of asteroid taxonomy and can identify interesting targets

Two stage superconducting quantum interference device amplifier in a high-Q gravitational wave transducer
We report on the total noise from an inductive motion transducer for a
gravitational-wave antenna. The transducer uses a two-stage SQUID amplifier and
has a noise temperature of 1.1 mK, of which 0.70 mK is due to back-action noise
from the SQUID chip. The total noise includes thermal noise from the transducer
mass, which has a measured Q of 2.60 X 10^6. The noise temperature exceeds the
expected value of 3.5 \mu K by a factor of 200, primarily due to voltage noise
at the input of the SQUID. Noise from flux trapped on the chip is found to be

Golabi-Ito-Hall syndrome results from a missense mutation in the WW domain of the PQBP1 gene
Background: Golabi, Ito, and Hall reported a family with X linked mental retardation (XLMR), microcephaly, postnatal growth deficiency, and other anomalies, including atrial septal defect, in 1984.Methods: This family was restudied as part of our ongoing study of XLMR, but significant linkage to X chromosome markers could not be found. Extreme short stature and microcephaly as well as other new clinical findings were observed. Mutations in the polyglutamine tract binding protein 1 gene (PQBP1) have recently been reported in four XLMR disorders (Renpenning, Hamel cerebro-palato-cardiac, Sutherland-Haan, and Porteous syndromes) as well as in several other families. The clinical similarity of our family to these patients with mutations in PQBP1, particularly the presence of microcephaly, short stature, and atrial septal defect, prompted examination of this gene.Results: A missense mutation in PQBP1 was identified which changed the conserved tyrosine residue in the WW domain at position 65 to a cysteine (p.Y65C).Conclusions: This is the first missense mutation identified in PQBP1 and the first mutation in the WW domain of the gene. The WW domain has been shown to play an important role in the regulation of transcription by interacting with the PPxY motif found in transcription factors. The p.Y65C mutation may affect the proper functioning of the PQBP1 protein as a transcriptional co-activator
