The pre-implantation protein 3 (prei3), which might play a role in pre-implantation embryogenesis, is one of the promising candidate genes for litter size traits in pigs. In this study, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP: T802G) in intron 6 of the pig prei3 gene was detected and a genotyping assay for this SNP was developed. An association study for this SNP with litter size was performed in two independent populations. One population consisted of crossbred sows derived from Landrace, Large White, Chinese Tongcheng and/or Chinese Meishan (Line DIV). The other population constituted of crossbred animals derived from Chinese Qingping and Duroc (QD). Statistical analysis demonstrated that, in first parity, 2.65 more piglets were born and 3.82 more piglets were born alive in sows in Line DIV with genotype TT than with genotype GG. For second and subsequent litters, in both the DIV and QD lines there were significant differences in the number of piglets born alive between TG and GG sows, with the TG sows producing more piglets born alive than the GG sows. These results suggest that the prei3 SNP is significantly associated with litter size in the two populations studied, and could be useful in selection for increasing litter size in pigs. Further investigations on more pig populations with large sample sizes are needed to confirm this. South African Journal of Animal Science Vol. 36(3) 2006: 209-21

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Local lymph node and blood metastasis could occur at early stage of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), which may be the key factors of its recurrence and poor prognosis. However, the mechanism of ESCC metastasis is unclear. This study was to analyze the genetic changes in primary lesion and lymph node metastases of ESCC, to screen for and locate ESCC metastasis-related genes. METHODS: Genomic alterations in 15 pairs of primary lesions and matched metastatic lymph nodes of ESCC were analyzed by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). RESULTS: In the 15 pairs of tissues, the most common chromosomal alterations were the gains of 3q, 8q, 6p, 20p, 5p, 18p, 2p, 2q and 1q, and the losses of 10p, 10q, 17p, 18q, 4p and 13q. Of these changes, the most significant finding was the gain of 6p with a frequency of 47% in metastatic lymph nodes and 13% in primary lesions, and the gain of 20p with a frequency of 73% in metastatic lymph nodes and 33% in primary lesions. The second interesting finding was the loss of 10p with a frequency of 53% in metastatic lymph nodes and 13% in primary lesions, and the loss of 10q with a frequency of 47% in metastatic lymph nodes and 13% in primary lesions. CONCLUSION: The gains of 6p and 20p and the losses of 10p and 10q are common genomic alterations in primary lesion and lymph node metastases of ESCC, which may code ESCC metastasis-related genes. link_to_subscribed_fulltex

Shilnikov Lemma for a nondegenerate critical manifold of a Hamiltonian system

We prove an analog of Shilnikov Lemma for a normally hyperbolic symplectic critical manifold MH1(0)M\subset H^{-1}(0) of a Hamiltonian system. Using this result, trajectories with small energy H=μ>0H=\mu>0 shadowing chains of homoclinic orbits to MM are represented as extremals of a discrete variational problem, and their existence is proved. This paper is motivated by applications to the Poincar\'e second species solutions of the 3 body problem with 2 masses small of order μ\mu. As μ0\mu\to 0, double collisions of small bodies correspond to a symplectic critical manifold of the regularized Hamiltonian system

Quasi-periodic vs. irreversible dynamics of an optically confined Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider the evolution of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical trap formed by a doughnut laser mode. By solving a one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and looking at the variance and the statistical entropy associated with the position of the system we can study the dynamical behavior of the system. It is shown that for small condensates nonlinear revivals of the macroscopic wave function are expected. For sufficiently large and dense condensates irreversible dynamics takes place for which revivals of regular dynamics appear as predicted in [9]. These results are confirmed by a two dimensional simulation in which the scales of energy associated with the two different directions mimic the experimental situation.Comment: 10 page

A signal regularity-based automated seizure prediction algorithm using long-term scalp EEG recordings

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a signal regularity-based automated seizure prediction algorithm for scalp EEG. Signal regularity was quantified using the Pattern Match Regularity Statistic (PMRS), a statistical measure. The primary feature of the prediction algorithm is the degree of convergence in PMRS (“PMRS entrainment”) among the electrode groups determined in the algorithm training process. The hypothesis is that the PMRS entrainment increases during the transition between interictal and ictal states, and therefore may serve as an indicator for prediction of an impending seizure.

Controlling a magnetic Feshbach resonance with laser light

The capability to tune the strength of the elastic interparticle interaction is crucial for many experiments with ultracold gases. Magnetic Feshbach resonances are a tool widely used for this purpose, but future experiments would benefit from additional flexibility such as spatial modulation of the interaction strength on short length scales. Optical Feshbach resonances offer this possibility in principle, but suffer from fast particle loss due to light-induced inelastic collisions. Here we show that light near-resonant with a molecular bound-to-bound transition can be used to shift the magnetic field at which a magnetic Feshbach resonance occurs. This makes it possible to tune the interaction strength with laser light and at the same time induce considerably less loss than an optical Feshbach resonance would do
